View Full Version : How Long Until You're "Clean"?

Okay,
There isn't an absolute right or wrong answer I'm looking for here, just YOUR opinion!
So, say you've tapered/ quit/ stopped using any form of opiate (loperamide is not counted), how many days, weeks, months do you go without using anything before you would consider yourself to be "clean" ?

That's a pretty good, tho controversial, question...I don't know if I even trust my own thinking any more on this one: I've been off opiates altogether for years, figured I was as "clean" (I hate that word, but it's useful) as I would ever be...but it didn't take but a few percocets taken for pain, to immediately change everything, and within a week I was getting 100 dilaudids a month, then back to heroin, then everything to shit again...same thing happened again after years--how I got on here--so I don't know: I haven't done any opiates for a few months now, but I've learned just to enjoy the day, do the best I can, and never consider myself out of the woods...there always seems to come a time when the only thing will make life bearable--or pain go away--is opiates, and then...well...I usually don't want to quit...
But anyway, for me, hell 24 hrs off the shit is clean...(and like you said, I include mdone and bupe in the opiate equation: they're just legal versions of the same thing, to me) but staying that way, and being reasonably happy that way, is another matter...but I just got out of the ocean, had me a sandwich and a salad, so right now, I guess I'm 'clean.' Tomorrow, well, I'm "hopeful" I'll stay this way...but you never know...if they had real heroin in my neighborhood, I doubt I'd stay anything like this...hell, I'm following the "Detroit" thread with way too much interest :) I'll never change.

i think once you have a real habit you can never be clean. its like a permanent stain on a carpet. you can clean it up as good as you can and try not to get anymore stains on it but it will always be there. and it will never be clean like it was before you spilled the shit on it.
apologies for the terrible analogy.
One's clean(ugly term) as soon as the drug is out of your body.

I don't think I will ever consider myself "clean" of this whole life. No matter how long you go without, it's always there in the back of your head.
That being said, I usually consider myself straight after not using for 5-7 days. That's just for H and oxys, subs lasted about 2 weeks.

I consider clean (and sober) to be about 5 to 7 days after last use.
Now technically I suppose you're probably clean as soon as the opiates stop actively acting on your brain... so what, like 12-24 hours, or however long it takes for you to be in full withdrawal? But I definitely don't consider this clean AND sober. I would consider that when your brain is able to function like normal, and think logical thoughts, and not get confused by abstract thinking so easily, and be able function like your standard "sober person." Because when I'm in the worst of withdrawals, and even the few days after it, I definitely don't feel like my brain is clean. During that time I usually feel more "fucked up" than when I'm actually using opiates, and my ability to think is definitely clouded and a serious struggle.
So after about 5 to 7 days for me, I'm done with the worst of withdrawal, and my brain is starting to regain some of its original functionality, clean functionality... I guess.

I'd have to say the first 24hrs. w/out d.o.c's & from thier it's one day at a time (hate to qoute a certain groups phrase) but do think it has truth to it!
Just my 2 cents!

I agree with Nick. Every drug has a half life.

Hey Nick,
When the drug is out of one's body, what about its metabolites? How long for those to clear?
I know "clean" is a less than non-hurtful term, but most of us understand it. Maybe "Opiate-Free" is better.
So if its been 1 month since doing pods, "tapered" M & H use, a minor withdrawal last weekend, and 2 days since doing 45mg of Morphine (~4 hour half life??), is one "clean-ish?"
That is where I'm at. The restless legs on Saturday sucked donkey ballz, but were gone by Sunday. I fucked-up on Monday with a small dose of M, but no more restless legs, no real big craving.
Clean yet? Wait a few more days? A week?
I agree with Duckfeet, that being opiate-free is definately doable, but when you get that Rx for T3s (or whatever) it too easily kicks-off an escalation!
Thanks all,
M F

I really like your answer!
no one has mentioned being able to "pee-cleanly." Granted, this might be more of a legal issue as many of the detectable metabolites aren't active.
All Good!
