They make one hell of a big deal if you pop a dirty for benzo's more than anything else at the clinic, that I attend. I mean they pull your take homes for 30 days instantly if you test dirty for benzo's & their is a system for every other drug ya test dirty for. I know how deadly they can be mixed with methadone if you misuse them bad, but ya think they would give ya some kind of a serum level test for those who really need benzo's. I mean they could have something like a zero tolerance thing that if ya screw up once the benzo's are over but nooo. I suggested that to them I was just kinda wondering what other clinics policys are on this Im new here and this may not be a thing to bring up but what the hell Im never gonna learn if I dont give it a shot so.

I can understand why. There have been many deaths in my area due to Methadone + Benzo combiation. It slows the breathing down to nothing if overdone. Not saying you can't take them together responsibly but I assume this is the reason for the strict rules (at least in my area).

Since methadone clinics first began, benzos+methadone has been a popular choice for more and more addicts, and just like other opiates, it has reached the streets...and younger different demographics, and people have died, so the clinics have had to crack down...lots of people I know on methadone here, wouldn't consider it without the benzos...whether it's "need" or "want" gets into such a ball of worms. Fuck.

Statutes like this aren't meant to be fair or logical. They're meant to cover the clinic's ass and also for "your own protection." Mainly it's about the clinic though. It's more work for them if they have a more logical policy, like what you described with serum levels, etc. It's easier for them to just have a zero-tolerance policy to the issue of benzos.
The fact is that some people on methadone will abuse benzos and will OD, and some will not. It's easier for clinics to just play it safe and not risk it by saying you can't use them at all.
Same thing with Subs, although I do think the benzo + Sub thing is even more illogical. I really don't see life-threatening breathing / OD issues from taking benzos and Subs as scripted, or even snorting Subs and benzos. And I think the whole "no benzos on Subs" thing comes from a few French studies where the addicts were injecting Subutex and Valium. But rather than saying IV bupe and benzo use can cause OD, they just make a blanket statement saying no benzo use with Subs.

I've got a friend that told his sub doc that he was on Xanax, and the doc was pretty ok with it... According to him, the doc just told him not to take more than prescribed cause it could be very dangerous... other than that everything was fine - he got his sub script, plus meds to help him sleep. (that kinda seemed to add to the danger to me but IDK)
Also, I posted this in another thread, but if anyone wants to see what Xanax abuse does to someone on MMT I suggest checking out a documentary called Methadonia. It shows how the Methadone/Xanax cocktail is a way that former H addicts got around the system - cause this combo fucks you up - just watch the vid.
It will make you wonder why anyone would try this mixture after seeing this documentary - though I admittedly am a hypocrite on this one... I just wanted to see what happened :).
