Medical Marijuana Raids in L.A. (http://www.reason.com/blog/show/135409.html)

Yesterday local and federal law enforcement agencies raided (http://www.mercurynews.com/california/ci_13046181) two medical marijuana dispensaries in the Los Angeles area, Organica Collective in Culver City and Overland Gardens Collective in West L.A., and arrested their owner, Jeffrey Joseph, at his home in Topanga Canyon. The Los Angeles Times reports (http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la-me-pot-raids13-2009aug13,0,7018090.story) that "the DEA, FBI, Internal Revenue Service, Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, Los Angeles Police Department, Torrance Police Department and Culver City Police Department took part in the raids." But local police were serving state warrants, so ostensibly the feds were assisting them, rather than the other way around. In other words, this looks like the sort of case Attorney General Eric Holder had in mind when he said (http://www.reason.com/blog/show/132314.html) the Justice Department would get involved in medical marijuana cases only if they involved violations of state as well as federal law. The details of the case against Joseph, once they emerge, may show whether this distinction means anything in practice or is merely a ruse for continued federal interference with California's medical marijuana policy.

hm. Makes sense if they were violating state law but the feds seemed pretty interested here.

I do know for a fact that 'SOME' of the dispensaries sell to people WITHOUT a medical license. Cops usually camp out at one and pull over the customers they see leaving just to see if they have a license or not.

might be a little offtopic but:

i heard from someone that some of those places have a doctor onsite at certain times that will give you a quick checkup and a card. any truth to this?

Cards are really easy to get, usually just need $1-150 and some sort of medical claim.

This is an interesting subject matter. SWIM's brother has a card and until recently was working at a dispensary. Anyway .. they are so secretive (sp?) about it, the one he was at, you had to go into a laundrymat and out the back door and then you could get to the side of the building that was cutoff from the front and back parking lot - i.e. the only way in was through another working establishment. Pretty neat I think - thats the kind of cool arrangement you see when state law is OK with it.

So the federal law has weed on schedule I which is fucking retarded if you ask me, synthetic opiates/opoids are CII and weed is CI? Well theres plenty of reasons for that I wasnt born yesterday, Im sure we can all relate. But anyway .. The DEA can and will and has busted down these places. Its just like racial integration during the civil rights movement .. you had state racial laws in conflict with the federal rights bill .. and then you see the law enforcement arms busting people down.

Anyone ever see that special on HBO about Tommy Chong and the whole DEA crusade to take him down? Take him down? right? What the hell was that? And for what, the guy only spend like 9 months in jail, ridiculous.

Yeah... With all the dangerous criminals we have running around in the streets the DEA wastes millions of dollars a year doing stupid shit like this. Is anyone here afraid of Tommy Chong? Is he a dangerous person... a threat to society?

The DEA is a sick fuckin joke!!!!!!!!!!!! A HUGE waste of this country's resources.
