So I was wondering a few things. I'm pretty big into Howard Hughes and I've done a lot of research on him and I guess there's a few things that I'd like some insight on. HH was a definite junky(rumored that he ingested up to 5grams of codeine a day) could be wrong on that) with more means than anyone. So why did he stick to codeine for the 30 plus years he was doing narcoticos? wouldn't one think that with someone like howard hughes who was a billionaire in the '60's! no less, would switch to something more practical if not more fun? Maybe he just liked codeine who knows? Also, in the book I'm reading it says HH would take his codeine pills (emperin) I think) take a few...put them in his 1 liter water bottle..(with water about n inch high in the bottle. Then mix them up...draw it up and so forth. I had to read that a few times...that really doesnt make any sense to me. what was he doing? He got his dope from a pharmacuetical company in which he controlled you'd think he'd some pure hydromorphone.
All else aside.....wouldn't it be intoxicating(in more than one way) with that type of access .....I bet he had no clue what even a hint of withdrawal felt like. Although I should mention he was in a lot of physical pain.

I always kind of like him, for some reason: I kind of remember when I was a kid, and he came back from some long sailing trip, and then I read how he hadn't cut his fingernails and was living in a room alone, watching old movies and crazy and all strungout on codeine...in the old days, when the available choices that most people knew about, from docs, was usually morphine or codeine, and morphine had all the "junky" connotations...after that, *percodan* became kind of the celebrity drug of choice...but hey, Howard got to be a famous junky before it was cool...

I've always wondered this myself, and the only real answer i could come up with is it's the same reason he ate only milk duds for like a month, same reason he only used tissues when he stacked the boxes in a certain way and et cetera: he was nuts.

Funny but true. Or cut his toenails. Folks with OCD are like that with routines and keeping them exactly as before. Any variation caused some major anxiety.

I read (maybe here) that after he died they found a bunch of broken hypo syrringes broken off in his arm. Ouch! I thought though that he switched to morphine later on.

Yep: after I'd been around a while, and read somewhere that William Burroughts "only did methadone now!" Right. ...I learned to be really skeptical about well-known addicts and the drugs they claim they do...I *knew* that WB wasn't in the Bowery just on mdone, and I also believe that HH was probably the same...these guys must've figured to will thro sand in their persecutor's eyes...and when you're famous...I guarantee local prosecutors and cops are laying dead to nail you....so nobody with *any* kind of fame is going to admit to full-blown junky status...unless they need to do more jail research....so from WB to HH to Doctor John to Keith Richards to any of'em...I tend to disbelieve what they put in their books and press statements...I get it, they have no choice...kind of like us when Mom asks if we still do drugs...

Uncle Bill had an oil burner h habit when he lived in the bunker and that's part of the reason he moved to Lawrence.Hell,he was getting old and even junkies want to retire.
I believe he stuck mainly to his script in Lawrence, but I do know when he dies he had a LOT of done stashed.Apparently he stashed it in case civilization ended, which is typical uncle Bill.

Oh yeah and poor ol' Howard.A perfect example that money doesn't always make you happy......or even sane.

I totally agree with you Duckfeet..when one has all that public attention...they would have to be retarded to say whats really going on. Unless they really are 100% clean...which does happen believe it or not. But like ray charles for example..when they got him coming off the plane. That was totally someone wanting to single him out. May have been race related as well..im not sure. It reminds me of good ol' scott weiland saying he's been sober for six years until he releases a press report stating he's back in rehab.

I love hearing stories about WS Burroughs. And have always enjoyed junky ramblings about coke bugs, Interzone, and the Rube. I think it was that same book, naked lunch, was where i read the inside of his vest pocket would be stiff with junk from where he'd just dropped a couple drops in everytime he dosed for when he got thrown in jail. are there any existing threads about uncle bill?

HH seems like a very interesting man as well. I remember reading 3 grams of codeine. I'd believe he was doing other things. And DB, you did read that here.

The Pseudoaddict Essay seems to simply be justifying his humongous habit and junky ways by painting him out as a misunderstood IP patient. Whether thats true or not.. Said its reasonable to have 5 needles detached and embedded in your arms. That diabetics and other pain patients that injected used glass syringes with detachable needles and some diabetics left theirs under the skin.

"He did not routinely inject codeine *as an addict would,* and INSTEAD injected it subcutaneously or in muscle tissues" -Howard Hughes Pseudoaddict

yeah okay ;)

I'd forgot about Ray Charles...I remember hearing about that on Armed Forces Radio...I don't know if it had just happened, or they were doing a commentary...and I had yet to do any kind of opiates yet...but withing a few months, best I can remember, I was all strungout on heroin...

yeah I too remember reading and hearing about them finding needle tips in his arms.
