Now I know that histamine blockers such as tagamet work well at potentiating opiates (and I've used them together to great effect), but recently I was put on nexium due to acid reflux, and I figured it might potentiate opiates as well since proton-pump inhibitors have similar effects. I've been finding that it is potentiating almost too well as even small doses of hydrocodone are making me feel extremely nauseous (with some vomiting today) when I never used to get much nausea before.

Am I right in guessing this is due to the nexium? Any idea if skipping my nexium on a day I plan on doing opiates will cause me to avoid this, or would I need to take more than a day off of taking my nexium? I'll throw my script of nexium right into the garbage if its going to make it difficult for me to enjoy my opiates. I'll deal with heartburn if it comes to that =D

Yes, This is probably why you are getting sickly high from your hydro. The only downside I can see is if you ever discontinue your nexium use, you wont feel your opies as much and you will be miserable becuase you wont be getting high

I, too, have the acid reflux and take an RX med for it. It's called Protonix and is a proton-pump inhibitor also. I used to take Prilosec OTC, which worked quite well but is pretty expensive ($15 for a 2 week supply--so $30 a month), so I got this 'cause insurance will cover it. I thought for sure I'd get Nexium because it's so common, but she gave me this.

I never even gave potentiation any thought--I wonder if Protonix is a potentiator--but I did not notice any drastic change in effects when doing opiates on top of it. I also did not notice any increase in nausea or vomiting, which happens only occasionally for me and seeminly has no pattern or trigger.

Just a FYI, each health insurance provider has a specific PPI they approve for acid-reflux, which is why you didn't get Nexium. All the PPI's are roughly the same though, just how it works out. I'm on Oxford, which goes with Nexium (obviously).

I took tagament(sp) and my normal hydro dose a while back (normal meaning when i have hydro how much i take). It seemed to last quiet a while longer, not much more intense but longevity was deffenantly increased. I hadnt thought of it at the time so im skeptical about the plaecebo affect however that is a possibility. My guess was it reduced stomach acid that might not have been so possitive for the substance?

I thought it was a histamine blocker, and helped also with stopping the liver from making such an aggressive first pass on the opiate filtration...
