It happens to me all the time and it is quite annoying. I try all the tricks and they will go away but come back in 20 mins for me.

Wow, my wife gets 'em every single time we do opies. I only get 'em occasionally. She eats a spoonful of peanut butter or honey and it works every time to stop them. But they always come back.
What a trip this thread is--I had no idea others got this too...

I feel that if this happened to me I would finally be able to stop using opiates all together. Hiccups after every fix would be terribly annoying.
Did this side-effect develop for all of you after years of use or has it always been
present?

Hi, I'm new to the site but not to the scene. . . .
Yeah, the hiccups thing is definitely something I've encountered in my travels, so to speak. Just today after downing a huge mug of poppy tea the same thing happened to my boyfriend. Drove him nuts!
The best thing I have found for it if they don't go away quickly is a benzo; the little Ativans that dissolve under your tongue are the quickest, but Xanax works or whatever you can get. I hear if someone gets intractable hiccups (imagine hiccups that didn't go away for weeks!) they pump 'em full of IV Ativan and it does the trick. I knew this was done for cancer patients at an oncology clinic my mom worked at years back and I thought their hiccups were some weird chemo side effect or something, but thinking of it now, probably a lot of those patients were on high-dose opiates too. Interesting . . . .
As to what about the drug actually causes this, you got me there!

^Hello, and welcome to the board! This place rocks--hope you dig it and stick around...
But in regards to your post, I can see how a benzo might help, but in our personal situation, when my wife is completely fucked up on heroin, the last thing I think she'd want is a benzo---that can be a very dangerous combo.
I said it before, and it works: a spoonful of peanut butter will stop hiccups dead in their tracks. Unless of course, you're allergic to peanut butter, then it would probably suck for you. ;)

The benzos are what usually give me hiccups. Xanax is the WORST not just me my freinds too. I use sugar to make them go away.

Occasionlly but mostly from morphine or cuppa pod tea...
A hiccup is your bodies way of telling you to breath more. This happens with opiates because the resperitory depression. If you get up and move around a bit they tend to go away. It is a direct result of the nod really.
Be safe!

It seems to only happen when i get a really good buzz, the only way I can get rid of them is by tipping my head over actually bending over like I fold myself in half but standing up,its hard to explain and then drink out of the oppisite side of the cup.Its hard to do but I learned about it in an Health Encyclopedia.Wow after reading all these posts I'm glad I'm not alone.Oh and it always has been present!

Lol, you guys are the coolest I swear, I was just hiccupping away at suppertime just last night in front of my mom and I think she is so used to every little detail when I'm nodding on an opiate that she just looks at me like"okay obsessed I know you've taken something you dont have to even tell me"I know why you are hiccupping. Well I tried to throw it off course and I said, damn I hate that when I hiccup when I eat too fast or when I eat dinner rolls. I do however definately hiccup like crazy when I'm even on vicodin, it happens mainly while I"m eating but for the first time last night, I kept it up long after I got done with supper. My mom got a phone call luckily, I went into the basement to dose up again and I took a deep breath and held it in as long as I could, slowly blew it out and from then on I was fine. Next time ya'll get the hicks going try what I did last night, it might work or help. Ha ha I'm sitting here reading this post and was just hiccupping myself after a big fresh glass of poppy tea mmmm, then a benzo to wash it down and enhance it. By the way to the poster right above me, I love your avatar, made me laugh till my tummy hurt, ha ha 3 squirrels at it eh? well too bad they weren't on opiates or they would not be doin it to it.

Wow do I ever get them too, I mainly start hiccuping alot all the time I'm eating supper or a meal, its a dead giveaway to my family that I'm opiated again. I have too keep chugging down water after each mouthful or two of food just to keep them away somewhat, sure is aggravating though.

Never really had em myself, but because of my opiate nausea/vomiting sensitivity I can't manage to get very high anyway.

I have gotten hiccups on occasion while opiated, but not with enough frequency to really stand out as being caused by the opies.
