The only 2 Neil Young albums I've ever listened to are Rust Never Sleeps and Harvest Moon. They're pretty different from each other, but they're both great. He has so many (solo) albums though, and I'm sure that someone else can give you more info... but I know that those 2 are good "introductory" albums.

Neil Young is one of my all time favorites--he is a true poet--my favortie album is Harvest (London Symphony plays on a couple of tracks) from the early 70's after his Buffalo Sprignfield days--he mixes a lot of country western and rock and blues. His live album Live Rust is one of the best albums ever. Rock god in my book. For an old rocker, he still puts on a great show, especially when he plays with his old band Crazy Horse. He is a bit of loner, even has song by that name which is great. His newer stuff is so-so but start by listening to his stuff from the 70's. Weird guy, but as talented as they come as a songwriter/poet.
Oh, and don't confuse Harvest (from early 70's) with Harvest Moon (early 90's)--the first one is much better thouhg the latter had a couple of hits.

Ah.... yes, "On the Beach" is an excellent album. He has a billion albums - all great in their own right.
But I would start off with some of his earlier albums - "Decade", "On the Beach", "Long May You Run"
are all a great start.
Also, Neil did an album with Pearl Jam called "Mirror Ball" which was great. "Silver & Gold" would be a
good album to begin with as well.
The godfather of garage rock. Raw, honest, intense. Beautiful rock n' roll with beautiful lyrics.
Good find Raz - you will be busy for a while. He has written so much music - goes on and on and on....
edit: hahaha.... I just realized what Shadowsblaze was saying. However, "On the Beach" would be a good start

Hey Raz, Neil Young is from Canada. One of the first groups he was in was called Buffalo Springfield. He's also been in Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young which is probably the most well known.
Neil Young in primarily known for his solo material and his work with a band called Crazy Horse. He's been compared to Bob Dylan for his acoustic guitar/harmonica folk styling. Personally I like Neil much better than Bob.
Some of his best albums, in my opinion are; His first, self-titled, solo album, Everybody Knows This is Nowhere, Harvest, After The Gold Rush, Rust Never Sleeps, Tonight's The Night, On The Beach, Harvest Moon, Greendale, Four Way Street **(Crosby, Stills Nash, And Young), Deja Vu**. There are lots more but that's about all my brain can come up with right now.
He's also done some recording with The Band, James Taylor, Linda Ronstadt and others. Neil's "Godfather of Grunge" moniker is a relatively recent that was bestowed upon him because he was in the process of collaborating with Curt Cobain (Nirvana) right before Curt got the bright idea to kill himself. That title/label was put on him by a generation that was too young to have experienced his music in the beginning so they tried to make it theirs by Grunging him up.
Neil has always marched to his own drummer and never gave a fuck about what was popular or what the record companies wanted him to do. One example of this is that he refuses to use digital recording methods. ( using software and a PC to record his music.) He has his own studio and only uses tape. (like they did back when music meant something)
All of the above is strictly my opinion and not meant to piss any one off. Raz, just start listening to some of the above mentioned CDs and pick out what you like. Neil seldom sticks to any certain style, with the exception of cycling back to folk regularly. Good stuff.
I'm pretty sure you'll like his material - especially anything he put out in the 70s. I hope this helps.

That's kind of funny and cool that you just found out about him. Here in North America the guy is pretty much a household name but I could see someone in Europe not knowing who he is.
Neil ROCKS!
He hadta leave csn when he realized they were an all gay mens choir.:D (sorry notta fan)see I'm really not a hippie.
After shaking those geeks he went on to have an awesome career rocking out in the free world.
I only saw him a couple of times but both of those shows were kick ass.
Have fun checking out his music.

Raz my man. All I can say about Neil Young is that his music is awesome. Good sounding melodies, but its the lyrics and thoughts that make him SO great. His songs usually spur thinking and nastolgia when I listen to them.
SOme one mentioned Harvest above and I have to agree that is an awesome album.

Oh, my gosh - you've happened upon a BRILLIANT musician. Actually, Neil young is a friend of my older sister's - well, a friend, but the relationship began as a work situation. His is a long and powerful story, and not always an easy life by ANY means.
Let's see...2 suggestions: Neil has loads of videos on youtube. Please, find, listen to, and learn the story of his album Tonight's The Night. A fairly obscure album, but...well...just find it.
Welcome :)

What did Rolling Sone call him---a musical savant. My favorite is his darker stuff after losing two friends to smack, he hinted he may have turned to it a little. Raz, check out the "Ditch Trilogy" or "Doom Trilogy".
Time Fades Away (http://forum.opiophile.org/wiki/Time_Fades_Away), Reprise (http://forum.opiophile.org/wiki/Reprise_Records) 1973
On the Beach (http://forum.opiophile.org/wiki/On_the_Beach_(Neil_Young_album)), Reprise (http://forum.opiophile.org/wiki/Reprise_Records) 1974
Tonight's the Night (http://forum.opiophile.org/wiki/Tonight%27s_the_Night_(Neil_Young_album)), Reprise (http://forum.opiophile.org/wiki/Reprise_Records) 1975
I'm less familiar with Time Fades Away, still unissued on cd.. He has that 'idiosynchratic style some called "sloppy". I love it when a song feels as if it's gonna come apart any minute. Bob Dylan does that too.
Also Raz, Greendale is a great album and great story too. He did make a movie of the album about corporate irresponsibilty, greed, and general hollowness of the record biz.

Can't tell you much about Neil other than that he is an incredible artist.
But, his song "Harvest Moon" really does something to me. It reminds me of all the women that have come and mostly gone in my life. And every time I hear that song my eyes tear up thinking about what could have or what should have been.

Same here Upstate. I love this one too. In the DVD for his 2006 album (i think) Prarie Wind, Jonothan Demme, did a documentary of it's debut performance. When they do harvest moon, they have an actual broom on stage sweeping it across a piece of "something" to pick up the sound I assume.
He did a few bad albums using Vocoder--- Hawks and Doves, Trans, and Re-ac-tor---probably bad deliberatly to piss off his record label. He had a son with cerebral palsey during this time. Even when trying to be bad, there's still some good in these three albums.
He made up a thing with weed called "sliders" where he would put high THC weed with honey and let it slide on down. Sounds delicious.
Neil Yound is from Winnipeg Manitoba, Canada. His father was famous as a Canadian Journalist and author. He was only 16 I believe when he was in Buffalo Springfield. From there he did solo work and CSN&Y. He lives in California.

I personally like self-tiltled, into "everybody knows this is nowhere" up through "tonight's the night" until about "harvest". I really like "tonight's the night" lately. "Bruce Berry was a workin' man. used to load that econoline van..." "the sparkle was in his eyes but his life was in his hands". Lotta dope stuff I can relate to. He last Bruce Berry and Danny Whitten.... All the old stuff is the best.

He actually just released a HUGE boxed set of his work called Chronicles Vol 1 which is an 8 CD set with booklet and poster and has so much great music on it. I know that would be a huge purchase - it sells for 100bucks and people have listed some great single albums to get into. However if you do get into it deep this box set is incredible!

Why is it useless? It is in the music and art subforum, as it should be. Maybe its just me, but finding new (old) music that I enjoy is something I like sharing with people and discussing. You aren't a fan, thats your business, but its far from useless. Besides, it beats the hell out of someone posting "ohmygodimsofuckinghighicantseestraight" and there are scores of those.
