Dead Flowers - Rolling Stones

I actually made compiled a set of two different mixed CD's, one consisting of all songs about H. It included all genres of music from folk to hip-hop, which I think amounted to three volumes. I titled them "The H Compilations". The other set was a compilation of all songs about cocaine which I titled "The C Compilations".

I know, I know...The titles were not too creative but those discs stay in rotation.

OOPS on the double posts.

Time out of mind by Steely Dan instantly pops into my head. The John Prine song in question is called Sam Stone. Very tragic but beautiful song. Obliviously, Neil Youngs The needle and the damage done. Velvet Underground - Heroin (duh:)). John Lennon - Cold Turkey. I know theres shit tons more but this is whats comming to me right now.

A deadhead friend of mine swears up and down that the GD song Dire Wolf is about addiction. Didnt hear it at first but after a few listens and some consideration I think he is on to something. Obiviosouly open to interpertation though, as most Dead lyrics are.

Warren Zevon for the win. The first time I heard this song was at a Linda Ronstadt concert. She covers quite a few of the late Mr. Zevon's songs.

some good ones in this thread- definitely almost everything by spaceman 3/spiritualized; 'chinese rocks' is probably the most blatant after the VU's 'heroin'

jesus and mary chain - about hlf their songs are about drugs, - 'some candy talking' specifically heroin...

Black Crowes - She Talks to Angels

Fire and Rain.......

James Taylor

After much confussion about the meaning of the song JT confirmed in a 2005 interview on National Public Radio the song did in fact reference drug addiction and rehab.

"Poppies" by Marcy Playground

Anyone else buy that CD after "Sex And Candy" was a hit?

mmm I'm prob. the only one...

I didn't think of it until i looked at the list of songs on this CD, i guess "Opium" by the same band would also be about opies

Yeah: I like it best by Dwight Yoakum, but Zevon's words are so plaintive and simple, you can sing it to yourself staring out the window hoping for a fix, and it's still cool...the rest of'em, even Reed's and the Stones, still sound like Rock and Roll, which is cool: but this song sounds like a sad junky...which is real...I hope it's the last song I hear...

I hear Mariachi static on my radio
And the tubes they glow in the dark
And I’m there with her in Ensenada
And I’m here in Echo Park

Carmelita hold me tighter
I think I’m sinking down
And I’m all strung out on heroin
On the outskirts of town

Well, I’m sittin’ here playing solitaire
With my pearl-handled deck
The county won’t give me no more methadone
And they cut off your welfare check

Carmelita hold me tighter
I think I’m sinking down
And I’m all strung out on heroin
On the outskirts of town

Well, I pawned my Smith Corona
And I went to meet my man
He hangs out down on Alvarado Street
By the Pioneer chicken stand

Carmelita hold me tighter
I think I’m sinking down
And I’m all strung out on heroin
On the outskirts of town

Carmelita hold me tighter
I think I’m sinking down
And I’m all strung out on heroin
On the outskirts of town

Carmelita? Is that is the one that has lyrics as "....the County won't give me no more methadone, and they cut off your welfare check...."?

Oh, man, there's so many that immediately come to mind its almost hard to sort them out, lol. It's hard for me because when i think about "songs that are about opiates/heroin" specific bands/artists come to mind before specific songs, so I have to sit and think about it a minute, lol. And I owned that Marcy Playground, and still have it on my hard drive, that album is ridiculously patched with opiate references/outright songs about opiates, which after i heard Sex and Candy I was NOT expecting, lol.

Okay so I'm gonna put a few on here just because, well i'm high and bored so yeah

Failure - Stuck On You

Split Lip Rayfield - Pinball Machine (the only bluegrass song i've ever heard that's specifically about a hog farmer from kansas driving to chicago, leaving his family behind, in an old pickup with a load of hogs, selling them and spending all of the money on dope, it's a GREAT song, you should ALL check it out)

I've always though Black Sabbath/Pantera/Numerous other bands' Planet Caravan was OBVIOUSLY about heroin, though you could argue that it's about any number of drugs, but after the Pantera cover, Phil Anselmo's voice and, well, PHIL, made it seem like it was about heroin

I'm not going to say anything from NIN because, well, I've worn it out, and I mean come on, what the fuck else is Perfect Drug about?

Down - Temptation's Wings, and Rehab, speaking of Phil, lol

Alice in Chains - Every song Layne wrote, lol

Ministry - Just One Fix (one of my favorite songs EVER)

Pink Floyd - multiple songs, Comfortably Numb, obviously

i can't think of any more at the moment, every time i try to do something like this i have a massive brain fart so it never ends up working out, lol

This was song I used to like, back when I saw my life was going downhill, and nothing I could fucking do about it...It's "The Pilgrim," by Kris Kristofferson, and has been sung by all kinds of people...when Kris used to introduce it, he say it was dedicated to all kinds of bad boys of my day, like Dennis Hopper and others, who have either died or gotten off the shit...

Kris and Tom Waits now, are kind of like singers of the damned, tho Tom and Kris both, have mellowed out...but in the day, like the seventies, they were both crazy and wasted and putting out good music, some of which was made famous by others...

It doesn't mention heroin, but like Clapton's "Layla" it was always about heroin, to me, since that was my cross...

See him wasted on the sidewalk in his jacket and his jeans,
Wearin' yesterday's misfortunes like a smile
Once he had a future full of money, love, and dreams,
Which he spent like they was goin' outa style
And he keeps right on a'changin' for the better or the worse,
Searchin' for a shrine he's never found
Never knowin' if believin' is a blessin' or a curse,
Or if the goin' up was worth the comin' down

He's a poet, he's a picker
He's a prophet, he's a pusher
He's a pilgrim and a preacher, and a problem when he's stoned
He's a walkin' contradiction, partly truth and partly fiction,
Takin' ev'ry wrong direction on his lonely way back home.

He has tasted good and evil in your bedrooms and your bars,
And he's traded in tomorrow for today
Runnin' from his devils, Lord, and reachin' for the stars,
And losin' all he's loved along the way
But if this world keeps right on turnin' for the better or the worse,
And all he ever gets is older and around
From the rockin' of the cradle to the rollin' of the hearse,
The goin' up was worth the comin' down

He's a poet, he's a picker
He's a prophet, he's a pusher
He's a pilgrim and a preacher, and a problem when he's stoned
He's a walkin' contradiction, partly truth and partly fiction,
Takin' ev'ry wrong direction on his lonely way back home.
There's a lotta wrong directions on that lonely way back home.

We've been dancin' with...mr. brownstone...he's been knockin!
HE WON'T LEAVE ME ALONE....NAO NAO NAOoOoO..Won't leave me alone..
I used to do a little but a little wouldn't do it so the little got mo and mo-a-o..lol I'll stop here :P

RHCP - Under the bridge, Warped, probably alot of their other songs as well those two just stick out tho
Nirvana - Aneurysm
Sixx AM \ Nikki Sixx - Heroin Diaries (whole cd, very good album)
As someone else mentioned, Alice in chains (one of my fave bands)..
Moist - ressurection, silver, push, tangerine --pretty much all of their songs lol (check this band out if you've never heard them -- not sure if they're around anymore)

"I've been drowned out by the rain, still I'm wishing I could stay
But I'm sorry my old friend, I've got to leave you once again
And despite what I might say, I measure pleasure by the pain
Measure pleasure by the twisting of the metal in the vein
And it might be very hard, can't be more than what we are
Can't be more 'till it's over.."

That's the opening to "Ressurection" but I think silver is my fave song..

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S8xBETsR5ck -- weird video but killer song

"Everybody begs...in time..
You will be the first to fall, every feeling will disolve, we are silver..
morphine baby's final breath
ever rested to my breast
we are silver.."

Alot of STP songs are about dope too..."Flys in the vaseline" hehehe I always loved that line.
Kind of reminds me more of crack though -- being "stuck"

The 90s really brought about alot of heroin inspired music...I think it had a direct influence on the whole grunge \ alternative thing too...some people hate it, but i love it..
I'm sure I can think of more just not right nao

+1000 on Townes Van Zandt...

Sometimes I don't know where this dirty road is taking me
Sometimes I can't even see the reason why
I guess I keep on gamblin', lots of booze and lots of ramblin',
It's easier than just a-waitin' 'round to die

One-time friends I had a ma, I even had a pa
He beat her with a belt once cause she cried
She told him to take care of me, she headed down to Tennessee
It's easier than just a-waitin' 'round to die

I came of age and found a girl in a Tuscaloosa bar
She cleaned me out and hit it on the sly
I tried to kill the pain, I bought some wine and hopped a train
Seemed easier than just a-waitin' 'round to die

A friend said he knew where some easy money was
We robbed a man and brother did we fly
The posse caught up with me, drug me back to Muskogee
It's two long years, just a-waitin' 'round to die

Now I'm out of prison, I got me a friend at last
He don't steal or cheat or drink or lie
His name's codeine, he's the nicest thing I've seen
Together we're gonna wait around and die

ZEVON! Good call Duckfeet. I would also highly recommend reading his autobiography/biography if you haven't already. I was on a long tour of Japan, filled with 8 hour a day bus rides for 10 weeks straight. A buddy brought Zevon's book along, so I picked it up just to pass the time. I knew nothing of him or his work outside of "Werewolves of London" but I was hooked instantly. What a beautiful story and amazing life he had. I wish someone would make a biopic out of it.

Also, 'The Vicodin Song' by Terra Naomi is really, really nice. It's not about vicodin as much as it is about missing a lover....but it's awesome.

"i've got vicodin
do you want to come over
i know it's a long drive
from malibu
i got a pocket full of pills
and not one lover
and i'm feeling so bad
and so good
i don't know what to do....."

Thirty days Lord, thirty nights.
I'm comin home on a airplane flight.
Mama waitin at the ticket line.
Tell me son why do you stand there cryin.

It was the needle and the spoon.
And a trip to the moon.
Took me away.......took me away.

I've been feelin so sick and tired.
Got to get better, Lord before I die.
You better quit soon before you're dead.

Quit the needle and the spoon.
Quit the trip to the moon.
We gonna take you away........take you away.

I've seen a lot of people who thought they were cool.
But then again Lord I've seen a lot of fools.
Well, I hope you people Lord can hear what I say.
You'll have your chance to hit it some day.

Hit the needle and the spoon.
Hit a trip to the moon.
Gonna take you away.

Don't mess with the needle or a spoon.
Or any trip to the moon.
It'll take you away.

Lord they're gonna bury you boy.
Don't mess with the needle.
I know.........I know........I know.

thanks, taj, that's right! i fried at one of their lollapalooza type shows, the big melee, back in hawaii, millenia ago! it was (very early)tool, violent femmes, fishbone, stp (who sucked live even though we were all on acid at the time... that's pretty bad), and primus (one of the tightest live performances i have ever seen if i remember correctly).

meh, masturbation... getting high... what's the difference? ;)

jets to brazil "king medicine"

im not really sure if its about heroin/opies but these lines are sort of a vague reference.

"tell me how you do that crazy trick, where you walk around asleep"

and "now you're selling off the house so you can buy the farm,
you cut the heart out of your chest to let the light in through your arm"

those lines to me come across as opiate related.

"Thirty Days In The Hole" by Humble Pie. That's just a kick-ass song about down and dirty drugging and getting busted for it as well.

"How you doin' boy? You're here for thirty days. Get your long hair cut and cut out your ways."

We used to cover that song in a band I played in and it always got people up off their asses. It makes you want to get ripped.

that line could apply to a million things, i always thought it was about needing buttsex when i was younger aha. other than using mushrooms in the past, maynard seemed to be fairly anti-drug in interviews when i gave a fuck about them .

"fuck all you junkies and fuck your short memories"

whatever you get your kicks from, all songs start sounding like that. dont think backwaters about opiates in the least bit, they gotta have some other way more vague drug-related songs than their late-period goofball 90s bullshit.

HUGE tool fan here, and I have always interpreted that song stinkfist to be about dope, but you can see it so many other ways too - there is also the song "H" which i thought was obviously about it, but Maynard has said this song is about an inner battle. (which could also be addiction, i suppose)

I don't have any specific sources to suggest, but I *THOUGHT* that I've read interviews before where Maynard said to have battled with heroin addiction in the past. Sure, they may take a somewhat anti-drug stance now, but that doesn't mean there wasn't addiction problems in the past.

To add a bit more Maynard/Tool stuff, I've read that A Perfect Circle's album Thirteenth Step refers to some extra last step in a 12 step program and this A Perfect Circle song is also very addiction oriented.

tilling my own grave to keep me level
jam another dragon down the hole
digging to the rhythm and
the echo of a solitary siren
one that pushes me along and leaves me
so desperate and ravenous
so weak and powerless over you

someone feed the monkey
while i dig in search of china
white as dracula as i approach the bottom
desperate and ravenous
so weak and powerless over you

Little angel, go away
Come again some other day
Devil has my ear today
I'll never hear a word you say
He Promised I would find a little solace and some peace of mind
Whatever. Just as long as I don't feel so desperate and ravenous.
so Weak and powerless over you

I don't know if 'dating' is a prerequisite for '13th steppin'... if ya know what I mean. heh

meh, masturbation... getting high... what's the difference? ;)

With one you clean up before you start. With the other you clean up after it's over. Depending on hygiene and other preferences of course...

HUGE tool fan here, and I have always interpreted that song stinkfist to be about dope, but you can see it so many other ways too - there is also the song "H" which i thought was obviously about it, but Maynard has said this song is about an inner battle. (which could also be addiction, i suppose)

I thought stinkfist was about anal fisting. It seemed pretty clear. i love tool and I think Maynard loves to push people past their comfort zone with his lyrics, esp on that album. Ill have to relook at that song.

how many songs do you think folks look into as songs about heroin but they couldn't be further from it..
That Candlebox song is about heroin?
There are also a few more on this list I'm wondering about...

My fav:

The Big Hand

The big hand makes all of your favourite things
Like all your dreams go small
And all your friends run away
Until your memories fail
And the words don't fit
But the way the big hand smiles
You just won't care about it

The big hand makes all of your favourite things
Like all your days run out
And all your hopes disappear
And your smiles just stop
And your eyes go dead
And the shadows start to crawl
In the back of your head

But when the big hand speaks
It's like fireworks and heaven
So you listen
Don't think
And wish for nothing at all
And when the big hand sings
It's like fireworks and friends
Leaving alone I'm not
Leaving alone
Leaving alone I'll never
Leave alone again

So when the big hand holds up all your favourite things
And with a touch like glass
Starts to squeeze
You don't ask
"Why me?"
You just slip to the floor
Just slip to your knees

But when the big hand speaks
It's like fireworks and heaven
So you listen
Don't think
And wish for nothing at all
And when the big hand sings
It's like fireworks and friends
Leaving alone I'm not
Leaving alone
Never leaving alone
Leaving alone I'm not
Leaving alone
Leaving alone
I'm not leaving alone again

Great thread guys! I agree that sometimes we think a song is about dope when the obscure lyrics could really be about doing laundry. I know when I was totally strung out I thought every other song was about mainlining. A couple other songs that are: "That Smell"- Lynard Skynard...... "Comfortably Numb"- Pink Floyd I'll be back if I remember any others not mentioned already. Btw, how is "Horse with No Name" about heroin? Just curious, I guess I better go look up the lyrics.

Just remembered, there's a few songs by Dave Matthews Band but the most obvious are "Jimi Thing" and "Rhyme& Reason". Also Nine Inch Nail's "Hurt" is an awesome song about heroin. Johnny Cash did a cover of "Hurt" because he said Reznor's song was the truest song he'd ever heard re: heroin addiction.

Female singer-songwriters probably aren't a favorite genre among opiophiles, but Sarah McLachlan's "Angel" is definitely about heroin. The lyrics fit and she's confirmed it. The melody even "fits" the opioid high.

On the first part of the journey
I was looking at all the life
There were plants and birds and rocks and things
There was sand and hills and rings
The first thing I met was a fly with a buzz
And the sky with no clouds
The heat was hot and the ground was dry
But the air was full of sound

Ive been through the desert on a horse with no name
It felt good to be out of the rain
In the desert you can remember your name
cause there aint no one for to give you no pain
La, la ...

After two days in the desert sun
My skin began to turn red
After three days in the desert fun
I was looking at a river bed
And the story it told of a river that flowed
Made me sad to think it was dead

You see Ive been through the desert on a horse with no name
It felt good to be out of the rain
In the desert you can remember your name
cause there aint no one for to give you no pain
La, la ...

After nine days I let the horse run free
cause the desert had turned to sea
There were plants and birds and rocks and things
There was sand and hills and rings
The ocean is a desert with its life underground
And a perfect disguise above
Under the cities lies a heart made of ground
But the humans will give no love

You see Ive been through the desert on a horse with no name
It felt good to be out of the rain
In the desert you can remember your name
cause there aint no one for to give you no pain
La, la ...

Megadeth - "Use the Man"

I heard somebody fixed today
There was no last goodbyes to say
His will to live ran out
I heard somebody turned to dust

Looking back at what he left
A list of plans and photographs
Songs that never will be sung
These are the things he don't get done

I've seen the man use the needle, seen the needle use the man
I've seen them crawl from the cradle to the gutter on their hands
They fight a war but it's fatal, it's so hard to understand
I've seen the man use the needle, seen the needle use the man

Just one shot to say goodbye
One last taste to mourn and cry
Scores and shoots, the lights go dim
Just one shot to do him in

He hangs his head and wonders why
Why the monkey only lies
But pay the pauper, he did choose
He hung his head inside the noose

I've seen the man use the needle, seen the needle use the man
I've seen them crawl from the cradle to the gutter on their hands
They fight a war but it's fatal, it's so hard to understand
I've seen the man use the needle, seen the needle use the man
Cryptic writing on the wall, the beginning of the end
I've seen myself use the needle, seen the needle in my hand

"He Scores, He Shoots...the lights go dim"

Just a perfect day,
Drink sangria
in the park,
And then later, when it gets dark,
We go home.
Just a perfect day,
Feed animals in the zoo
Then later, a movie, too,
And then home.

Oh its such a perfect day,
Im glad I spent it with you.
Oh such a perfect day,
You just keep me hanging on,
You just keep me hanging on.

Just a perfect day,
Problems all left alone,
Weekenders on our own.
Its such fun.
Just a perfect day,
You made me forget myself.
I thought I was someone else,
Someone good.

Oh its such a perfect day,
Im glad I spent it with you.
Oh such a perfect day,
You just keep me hanging on,
You just keep me hanging on.

Youre going to reap just what you sow,
Youre going to reap just what you sow,
Youre going to reap just what you sow,
Youre going to reap just what you sow...
