I read this book several decades ago and I need to dig up a copy. It's a collection of photos, newspaper articles, etc. from a small Wisconsin town from the turn of the century.
Parts are rather sad but what really surprised me was the articles about the hell raising addicts who caused all kinds of trouble after ingesting their favorite drug which they purchased over the counter. Opiates and coca products were available for pennies.
The women addicts really loved to smash out windows for some reason.
It may not be the best book to read if you're suffering from depression of any form!

I need to watch the movie, did they go into all the crazy drug use in the movie?
I highly doubt it was actually because of the drugs. I only saw a 10 minute clip, but they didn't mention it. Opium doesn't cause people to go crazy. They probably just blamed it on the drugs. After all, EVERYONE was going crazy, it'd be weird if the drug users DIDN'T go nuts.

Yeah I haven't seen any threads on Opiophile about "Help, I can't stop smashing windows!". But from what I recall the newspaper articles went on about the connection. Don't forget you could get much more than opium back then. Coke, heroin, etc. Bored, high, crazy women getting their kicks with flying bricks.
Does anyone have a link to watch this online?
