Question about a script for meds

SWIM has a script for some pills that should have been filled last week. The script is for SWIM's mother. When SWIM went to fill the script they were told that the script couldn't be filled because the Dr. had written one date on the top, and on the bottom had added in a note that said "Do not fill before (future date)" SWIM was told that the laws had recently changed and that they couldn't accept scripts that were written in advance even though it was indeed the date that the doctor had said to fill by. SWIM's mother got another prescription and received her pills. SWIM still has the original script though and has some questions. Since this is a new law SWIM is wondering if it's possible to fill at another pharmacy. But SWIM isn't well schooled in how these things work. Could this come back to bite SWIM in the ass? Can anyone think of any worse case scenerios that could occur if SWIM tried to fill this script? Script is burning a huge whole in SWIM's pocket who is out of pills until Thursday. Does the doctor ever receive information back from the pharmacy on scripts that are filled? Help greatly appreciated!

I am little confused to this post, but if I am reading it right, then scrips are treated just like personal checks, you cannot cash them until the date they were written for.....is that what you were asking???

If so, just hold onto it until the date arrives and, wholla, you have more pills. That sucks though, having a scrip and you cant fill it until a certain date.

Alot of pharmacies nowadays share databases so unfortunately if SWIM's mother has already filled her script when her refill was due that information is probably "in the system" and it may very well come back and bite her in the ass if she tries filling it again. I would advise against it, due to the risk involved, but if someone were to try it it may not be bad advise to try pulling it in a small non-chain pharmacy out of town... they are least likely to be connected to the others.

No, the date has come and gone. If you go through a small "mom & pop" pharm, and DON'T use her insurance, you should be able to fill it with no problem. The pharmacies are all link for insurance purposes, and that is why the prior scripts come up.

Ohhh, I hear ya. Yeah, you will have no luck w/ a large pharmacy chain, even w/ a mom & pop place I think your chances are slim, but its always worth a shot.

I agree with going to momandpop and no insurance. The problem is technically you would be committing some sort of prescription fraud, because the doc rewrote the script. Besides, the whole date thing may be fishy enough for the pharmacist to call the doc, and of course then shit would hit because he'd rewritten. Not that that would stop me when I am sick, but it might if I wasn't and just wanted to get high. Its a risk... depends on what the meds are and how bad you want them and what you're willing to pay for them (i.e. going wrong)...

Hell, is the script even good enough to take the risk?

Oh! I see what you were asking now. The bad news is that if the state you live in recently made that law about not filling any predated schedualed medications you will not be able to use it anywhere... maybe an online pharmacy (doubtful though because if your going that route and using the script your srewing yourself, see Rent's post). Your only chance of getting those meds would be to take the script to your doctor and have him rewrite it, and if it has already been filled that would be redundant.

Yea... that must be a state law because there is no federal law that states you cannot fill a post-dated script. Same with checks, post-dating a personal check does absolutely nothing the bank can still cash it. It is up to their discretion.


I SWIM has messed with scripts and gotten them filled and swim has also tried a few different pharmacies until one filled the script. Trial and error. But if you really are interested in altering the script there is some info you will need. And it is not foolproof. Does not always work and depends on the type of script paper it was written on. Lots of variables. Might not be worth the risk if the script is like for lets say.. some ultram or something like that,.

All narc scrips written have to have the DR's DEA# written on them. Those numbers are submitted to the DEA by all pharmasists it may take awhile to trace back, but it could come back and bite SWIM's mother because it will be her name associated with the scripts being filled.

For the most part when it comes to verifying the DEA algorithym it is done by simple mathmatics, no "tracing" involved. See this thread to find out how they work.
