One of my favorite Junkie Authors, Roberto Bolano, has a short story, or essay, that was recently translated into English. It's kind of about the apprehension, boredom, confusion of starting methadone after quitting heroin. He spends his days on the beach, trying to decide whether or not to get in the water. It kind of reminds me of Duckfeet. Actually, because of DF's posts about his interesting past/history in South America and Mexico around the same time period as Bolano's - I think they may be the same person. Actually Bolano died a few years ago from liver problems resulting from Hep C, but still....

Bolano was not like a lot of the opiate addict writers - he did not write anything definitive about opiates, drugs, the lifestyle - but he did mention them in all of his books that I've read. His stories, besides the short story I linked to here, are sprawling, dense, yet easy to read masterpieces that not only explore drugs - but almost every aspect of human nature. His most popular books 2666, and The Savage Detectives, I highly reccomend. I can't wait until some of his other books/stories get a translation.
