User Countdowns & Countups (http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=205841&highlight=user+timer)
For the users that decide they want to quit using and monitor their progress (or brag about their progress), with this plugin they could add a timer in their sig that shows "I've been clean: __:__:__ (days/hrs/min). I know this isn't a rehab site but hey... this site kinda makes us think about our habits more than we might be otherwise. So why not let us also think about our progress in not letting that overcome us if we so desire?
Or for the person waiting for that script to be fillable or for that supplier to get back in town :P you could have a countdown starting at w.e time you want and going to zero.
Maybe we just want a timeline of our WDs? Or a countdown for our expected WDs.
Or for anything really.
Anybody else like this idea?

I'd rather not be reminded how long I've been clean so I wouldn't use it. Cool idea though.

It's just personal shit, mostly, but I would probably vote against it: I thought about it, tho, since yesterday, and nah....I know that part of our love/need/desire for opiates, is also our distress at what this can do to our lives, and we try desperately at time to get off them, to find a reasonably happy accomodation w/life without needing opiates, and some do succeed at this, tho often they quit posting...
But I kind of like it that there is one site where our main emphasis is the *use* of opiates, and we are much more Harm Reduction oriented than any other site...I would hate to see us drift into a certain mentality *on this site* that would make us seem in any way more supportive of people's struggles to stop doing these drugs, than we are of people's struggles to obtain them, and to use them for *whatever* reasons...
And I feel that those who want to be surrounded by people who want *off* opiates can find much better sites...we get it, we understand, and I've had nothing but incredible support and friendship on here, regardless of whether I was heading down in my opiate use...or up...
I do like people on here who are "torn" between dope and no dope: learning to live w/that little ambiguity, and accepting it as who I am, is probably why I'm still alive, and why I've had lengthy periods off of opiates, for seven and five years, since I first started, way back in 1970....and I've also had all the other stuff: prison, psyche wards, jails all over, and all the broken heart that comes from watching what *else* I loved in my life...drive away...
I know you also mentioned that it could be used for other purposes, but this site needs *less* stuff...not more...
Good idea, tho, and others may see it differently.

That pretty much sums it up. We've been working to condense the forums for quite some time, so I'm a bit hesitant to add *anything*.
Not to mention all the good reasons Duckfeet brought up.
I don't know, I'd really enjoy watching my counter reset itself every payday...NOT :p

Yeah, and it's actually just plain old superstition: it's like members of AA in the old days who would sign their "pledge" never to drink again in the family bible...AA's founder, Bill Wilson, did it *twice*...and of course, that didn't work either...I've gotten off dope on here a while back, and yeah, once in a while I'll post about it, and once I made it for a month or so, but u know, it's really not the main focus of site, but we like the support and encouragement and all...I'm the kind of self-destructive junky who would be *more* inclined to go back to drugs if I started posting the days on here, not less...I want *one* place in my life when if the worst happens--and it has--and I find myself back in the almost daily hell and struggle of heroin addiction, nobody will be telling me or even *encouraging* me to quit: that I'll be accepted no matter where I find myself on that spectrum....I go to AA most every day...I get all I need there of the "day at a time" and birthdays, and counting the days, months, years, etc...
Here, u get off dope, u get an attaboy, and we have much experience to share on the subject...but the site is called "opiophile" for a reason....not opiophobe...
When I needed to get off subs, and couldn't do it: I spent a lot of time over on heroin-detox.com, which has much good advice, friendship, and the general view is "opiates are horrible, they kill, us" and that was what I needed...when I want support for methadone maintenance, and need to hear the *positive* in that area, I go to readybb.com/watchdog...
For friendship and understanding of who I am: a cheerful, troubled, conflicted old junky, I come here...

it should flash green when you're cured and you can use again. :)

That site was my first ever "opiates on the web" information site..and I loved it..it helped me through a lot of hard times, and it's actually where I first found out about buprenorphine back when it first came out. It's really sad that's its not updated anymore. Dr. H is a good dude.
I don't necesarilly agree with you on the site's general view though..although I haven't been there in awhile and the memory is a big foggy (cough, heroin...)..I think they show all sides of the opiod abuse spectrum, and try to help out when they can. There's just so much good information there though.

Damn and here I thought it was another thread about pluggin...
The quality of threads is really going down.... can't find a good "oxy up the ass" thread anymore.
Ya, I wouldn't really want to broadcast when my meds are due or anything like that. I see those plug-in's on a lot of sites, but not really sure if it would really be a good idea for here.

LOL, funny you mentioned that. I signed the "ban oxycontin" petition eariler with this comment:
Oxycontin is a very dangerous drug! My father died with 10 OC80s shoved in his rectal cavity. I was a bit shocked at first, but apparently this route of administration (called "plugging") is very popular. The dangers of analy administering oxycontin must be publicized!
Childish yet I lol'd :P

I have friends over there, and I've been active over there, but I could have put it better...it's definitely a place for people who see opiates in a negative way, and want off them, and there is plenty of support if you *do* see it as opioid abuse...*not* a place to go and say how happy you are on methadone maintenance, *or* how comfortable and grateful you ware to be on buprenorphene...and certainly not the place to go saying how you are getting ready to get on heroin-maintenance...;)
Ah, well: that's why they've got lots of websites: one man's music is another man's noise...

Well, shit. I saw this thread at lunch, and have been thinking since then what my opinion might be. When I got back home after work to reply I saw that everyone was against the idea. I'm going to have to say that I kinda like the idea. But I wouldn't want it public, I'd want it set to private so only you could see it. When I'm withdrawing, my internal clock gets completely fucked up and I start counting the hours until I might feel better, adding and subtracting time here and there for this and that - but that's just me, and it's obviously not going to happen looking at the opinions here - but way to go for making a suggestion, sharing ideas, and starting conversation. It's motivating me to make my own opiate withdraw calculator.

First thanks for the suggestions OP! I have to agree with every word Duckfeet said though, I don't think it is something that goes with the site's theme.

I agree. We are monitored enough in our day-to-day lives. I certainly don't want to come here and be tracked by a piece of software. No offense to the OP but I can't see too many members liking the idea of having their days clean or whatever stuck on the bottom of the screen like a hit counter.
I come here to talk with others with common interests. I don't need anything that remotely reminds me of Big Brother.

I think "Big Brother" would go over a whole lot better if we called it "Little Sister."

I'm sorry, but to me having a counter for "days clean" amounts to little more than negative dick-sizing. Seems little more than the reverse of how many grams of H I need to feel anything, or how many roxies I can handle in a session.
Who cares, except the user? BL has turned into a "junior physician addict help-line/psychiatric help 5 cents" type of forum and I would hate to see this forum go anywhere near that direction. I don't think my vomit center could handle it, quite frankly.
I don't think people are realizing that was just an example...it could be a countdown/countup for ANYTHING. Maybe how long till you score, how long you've been clean, how long til you move, keep track of your dose, etc. . And if you don't like it, you wouldn't have to use it. I mean yeah, if nobody wants it there isn't much point putting it in, but if it WAS put in, I don't see how it could be a bad thing: those who want it get a new feature that they like, and those who don't, don't use it and nothing changes.

This is the ONLY place on the web, or in real life, that I feel like its OK to discuss the pursuit of euphoria. Duckfeet summed it up well -- this is a place where we are accepted no matter what point we are at.
I am always supportive of those who are trying to get their lives in order --I just don't want to feel "guilty" if I want to talk about something else.
Also this environment may not be the best place for someone who is trying to quit -- to hang out. It might be a dis-service to someone, if reading the info here, pulled one of those "triggers" that many of us have regarding drugs.

I have a family friend who has an old bettle that still runs like a beast, but the body is all beat to hell.
He only wants some pocket change for it, and I could use a dune buggie...
He has a shaggin waggon too, and thats in mint condition. That would be a blast.

Oh, I *got* that: but then it kicks into one of the problems that Opy has, is that in the formative years, any time anybody had *any* idea that seemed interesting, it kind of got incorporated into the site...we've got several people on here that can write code, do all kinds of fascinating shit w/java, and would like to "fix up" site...
We just want to keep it simple, and if *anything* have less stuff, not more...but since the first example was something most of us obviously feel strongly about, we voiced are opinions about it: mostly, I just don't like countdowns because they are often a real guarantee of failure, and it gets old, knowing the predictable end result....
But again: we've got enough on here...enough "stuff." And anybody who wants should be able to figure out their own plugins, if they want them, rather need to come to website to pick up one here...addons and plugins aren't *that* hard to figure out....
I don't think people are realizing that was just an example...it could be a countdown/countup for ANYTHING. I guess I haven't ever dealt with rehab or anyone bitching at me to quit. My only motivation ever is myself... I just thought it would be a nice addition for those who want to use it, but it's not worth having if it just makes people feel worse about themselves or promotes an ideal not in sync with the goals of this site.

I'm sure you've figured out by now that we'll fight over anything on here: it was a good idea...we're just cranky and like to opine on all kinds of shit...I like your posts, and that's why I'm always jumping in on them, and often take both sides, depending on whether it's morning or night time :)

Thanks! My first car was a 1963 beetle with a full sun roof. This is a pic I found on the web. The only thing I don't like about this pic. is the hub caps. A beetle has "moon" hubcaps.
We also had a 1973 and a 1974 VW Beetle and my parents had a VW bus that I drove some in HS and my parents first car was a 1950's Beetle. I love them.
