Lately I've been looking to expand my horizons and such, and I've been wondering about san pedro cactus and it's brother(sister?) plants, namely Lophophora williamsii (peyote). Where would one obtain these types of cactuses? I've found a couple places online, but I don't know if these plants even have active alkaloids in them. And they're pretty expensive. Would I need more than one cactus? I don't know much about them yet.
I've been reading erowid and leda, but if anybody could give me any extra info on this subject via PM or in this thread, it would be greatly appreciated.

ariocarpus fissuratus and a few related species are suspected of psychoactive effects...they are also associated with ethnobotanical studies and reports....
I took one healthy, 3 inch ariocarpus fissuratus, that was rescued from private land being cleared by a cattle rancher (only to be consumed by me) and prepared it for consumption, the top, and bare root were seperated.
some data states that the top of the plant is a stimulant/psychedelic, while the roots provide a pain killing narcotic effect.
I at the roots first, and waited for a couple of hours.........
nothing.
then I ate the tops(both as a slurried mush that was easy to glom down the throat).
besided a slightly salty taste...the taste was remarkably fresh and vegetable like.
after a few hours I decided that there was very little psychoactive effect with at least this specimen..there may have been a little stimulation involved, and I did notice a type of side effect from either consuming alot of salt, or some alkaloids effects of keeping my mouth wet, and seeming to keeping me very hydrated, I have noticed this same effect when consuming san pedro...
other than that somatic effect similiar to salt intake there was really nothing.
I still have two beautiful specimens growing, one that flowers most years, and I am never going to eat this cactus again!

I would definately got for Sam Pedros. Peyote take too long to grow, and aren't as plentiful.
I was fortunate enough to find one for sale from an old hippie who ran a plant nursery. Half his plants were drugs. That's where I got my San Pedros, Datura, and Brugmansias. Never tried an online shop for them. It's a shame the guy retired too.
I just recalled something. When I bought the cactus, the old hippie said "Don't eat that right away.":p
