Been thinkin about rollin my own lately to save some cash and maybe cut down. Another plus could possibly be less chemicals.
Just wonderin what brand of pouch tobacco is good and maybe if the machines are cool or if I should just man up and get good at rollin like a cowboy.
Or maybe I should be one of those pipe guys. That shit usually smells pretty good to me. Unlike cigars.
I'm sure a few real men will disagree w/me but those things usually smell like dirty taint if you ask me and I know you didn't but I like to hear myself type.
I use Gambler full flavor tobacco and Gambler filtered tubes. I use a bugler plastic tobacco roller(injector), but may invest in one of the bigger machines at some point. I've tried several different injectors but I like the Bugler one the best, people have their own preferences though. I have been rolling my own for about 4 years. I occasionally smoke American Spirits (black box) and less often Marlboro reds. Throughout my smoking career I used to also hand roll my own with Drum and the papers that are supplied(no filters).
I'm a pretty heavy smoker and even with the recent increased tax on loose tobacco it's still not a bad deal, imo. I also like a pretty strong cigarette, the stronger the better. It might seem like a hassle to begin with, but once you get the hang of it it's not that irritating. You can also buy plastic cigarette packs to put your smokes in for when you go on the road. I have a couple of neat little tins that fit my smokes just right that I usually use.
this is a picture of the injector I use http://www.pipesandcigars.com/buciin.html
I don't use this brand but this picture show how it works a little better. http://www.smokersoutletonline.com/top-injector-p-57.html
hope this info helps some

Taj, I'm getting the feeling of Deja Vu. I'm a Gambler smoker as well. Got myself a Premier Supermatic when I first started a few years ago and it's still working fine. You'll save a lot of money by making your own. A lot. They taste better too, imo.
If you're thinking about a pipe be sure to buy a decent one. I enjoy a good pipe now and then. I was fortunate enough to have a friend who'd been a pipe smoker for a long time and he helped me pick a good one. One of the things to look for in a pipe is if it will sit flat and not tip over if you lay it on a table. There are certain types of pipes that won't apply to. Ben Wade is a good brand. That's what I have.
You should do a little research on how to properly break in a pipe if you get one. Lots of people give it up because they don't take the time to break the pipe in correctly. A well broken in pipe will give you a nice cool smoke and stay lit for a very long time. Or just VM me and I'll let you know how to do it.
EDIT: This is really weird. I just followed your 2nd link to the other injector and there's my machine down at the bottom of the page. I think I'm lucky because I have the older model that's made in Canada.

^^^ nice, I really should by a machine like yours, but what I have been using works good enough, I usually have to but one injector a year, but I may get one like yours next time around.
No way I could afford to smoke if I didn't roll my own. I smoke 1-2 packs a day,in the past I have been at 3 packs a day. I love smoking and I'm not gonna pretend like I wanna quit anytime soon. My love of smoking is up there next to my love of opiates. At least at this point in my life.
A pound of gambler used to cost about 20 bucks a month, but now it's like 45. Tubes are about $2 or $2.50 for a box of 200(price has also increased lately)
I probably go through a pound and 4 boxes a month, so about $60 a month. my little machine I use is about $7, and I go through one a year, one like UW uses is about 30 or 40 dollars.
I also usually snag a few packs of smokes from my job on the weekend, so I'm not counting those

My monthly price is almost the same as Taj's. There's a tobacco store near me where I can get a pound of Gambler for 42 bucks and change. Most places are charging close to 50 but it's still a better deal than buying shelf brand or trying to smoke generics which taste like shit.

I'm no ciggie smoker but here in NZ rollies (kiwi for roll your own) is standard, I'd hazard a guess that it's the most common method. That observation could be skewed by the type of people I hang out with though!

Yeah, I figure if I'm going to do something I'm going to do it right. The funny, if you want to call it that, thing is I play trombone professionally besides the other stuff I do. It really hasn't affected my playing. Another "funny" thing is that a shit load of people who play in orchestras and jazz bands smoke. During the intermission at least half of them are out back smoking.

Yup, I roll my own too. I used to smoke a pack of Marlboro Reds a day, and with the price going up here in TN it got too expensive along with my other habits. With the recent govt regulation of the price of tobacco by weight, the price of a .75oz pack of Buglers went from $1.40 up to $3.40 and I guess thats still better than $6.00 per pack of premium smokes. The generics packs of smokes just taste like shit. The only thing that sucks about rolling my own (not using any filters) is the tar stains on the finger tips if I dont wash my hands right after smoking. I'm gonna have to try the Gamblers since ya guys say those are good.

I just realized another benefit would be not having to run to the quikimart all the time. In the summer it's not too bad but how moronic is it to have to run to the store when it's 2 degrees outside and the car is covered in snow.
I'm def gonna switch this week. Thats a big savings and I really need to watch my cash flow. Even if I don't right off, I'm gonna learn to like'm. One of my ex coworkers used to let me bum his rollies on occasion and I thought they were pretty damn good.
Thanks again for the info.

You could get one of those long cig holder things like the mother from the adam's family used. Plus you'd look really eccentric. The guys at my old job prob woulda had another description though. But you should do it. Start a trend. Lay the groundwork.

Ooooohh, I want one of those! I am going to have my dad be on the lookout for one(he deals antiques) Even if I just use it at home, I'll pretend like I'm some crazy old lady, I'm heading that way anyways, might as well get a jump start on it. :p

I am a gambler smoker too. I usually get the tops tubes because they are cheapest and use an old zig-zag cig maker that kind works like an old credit card machine. Buying packs is way too expensive when I can get the pound for 35 I have found in one store. Either this year or next I am going to sow some tobacco seeds and see what I can do with that just for a fun gardening project.

Ok I slept all day, but if you are going to roll your own, there are many much better brands of RYO than Gambler. I personally use a Premier Excel, Twister tubes, and Rowland tobacco, from a company here in NC called Daughters & Ryan. They recently made the switch to "pipe" tobacco to avoid the big hit that RYO took with SCHIP, but their pipe blends roll great and taste far better than any of the other stuff available.
Living 45 minutes away from their location, I am able from time to time to actually go in and stock up. Really nice people, and the savings for taking a trip down the road can be substantial if you buy in quantity.

I just roll American Spirit regular. I think it's regular. They have a few different pouches, I get the aqua blue one.
I've always loved to roll joints or cigarettes. I've always been a pretty heavy smoker too. Now I'm down to less than a pack a day from a high (low)-point of about 2 1/2 packs a day. (One of my nicknames is Yul, after Yul Brynner who we al know, smoked 5 packs a day. You gotta let multiples burn in multiple ashtrays to accomplish that.).
I've smoked a lot of different brands. I started with the old Salems (early 80s with the sick, oldskool, Vietnam-era package design), then Camels, then went to Export A golds, to American Spirit Blues, and back through the cycle a few times, branching out into Kools and different brands for a while. It sounds like I was really fickle, but I used to smoke so much, it didn't seem like it: "OK, 3 years of Rothman's, 2 years of Kools, 4 years of Gauloises Reds because I worked in a place that was close to a tobacconist…. 3 years of Camels…" I've smoked menthols and plain. I like to smoke and I like variety. I approach food and wine in a similar fashion.)
Anyway, I always loved to roll joints, blunts and cigs so much that even when I was going through a period of non-smoking (primarily with weed), I would offer to roll for people. I can now roll a cowboy cigarette with one hand. I just love the ritual, the feel of the tobacco, the feel of the paper as you tenderly prepare it for loading and rolling, the tension of the paper as you're rolling. I could roll cigarettes all day long and achieve some sort of zen pinnacle from my practice.
I love the tehniques involved in different types of rolls, including blunts. There's something terribly satisfying about manipulating that tobacco leaf to end up with the straight cylinder and the perfect burn, the perfect tension.
I guess maybe my love for the process and practice is probaby why, when I quit smoking, I've never gotten nic fits, I just jones for the "fiddley-ness" of it. Dozens of times over the years, I've been in situations where I can't smoke for 4-5 days. I'll get a craving here and there, but it doesn't really bother me. It's the hand-oral satisfaction that I want dammit.
As to machines and hlepers and such, I most definitely don't have anything against rolling machines or tubes… rolling is just a pleasure for me. It's so satisfying. Sometimes (if I have money) I'll roll a perfectly good cig, then break it open and roll it over just for the joy of it. I just love it. I love the process and challenge that goes along with every cigarette. Will it be utterly perfect? Utterly tight (but not too tight,) a perfect cylinder (or whatever shape I'm aiming for)? Mmmm… going off to roll some cigarettes...

why..... and what's up with the rolled eyes, who cares how we like to roll our cigarettes.
I prefer an injector because it makes the closest thing to a real pack of smokes.
It's not just a money thing. In general I find RYO to be a higher quality tobacco than ready made smokes.
Still mostly smoke ready mades because I'm a lazy, lazy human being.

I'm not a huge fan of the process of making the cigs either. I buy my supplies, put on some good music, and go at it until the tobacco is gone. I've got four of the plastic packs so I fill them first and put the rest in a plastic bag and into the freezer.
I've tried doing it a pack or two at a time and found that I'm more prone to go out and buy shelf brand which always ends up disappointing me due to the taste and price. Just my .02
If I had a machine like UW I would probably have a rolling schedule like his. However I just have the plastic thing and usually roll one at a time, sometimes more and definitely more if I'm going somewhere. I think it slows my consumption down, which is a good thing for me. I keep a tray with my machine, tubes and the tobacco put in a smaller container,it's sort of like my smoking station.

I recently started rolling my own. I just use the papers, I don't have a rolling machine or filters. I was a Camel smoker and I found that Bugler tobacco tastes very similar to Camels. So... Bugler for me.
I just need the Nicotine. I don't care how I get it.
