new to site but long time friend of opiates. been on 20 norco 10/325 a day for 2 years. recently started bupe 16 mgs a day. and i have already switch for a day once, and I am pleased to say I only need about a 9 hour turn around between the two. I have an appointment on tues to see a pain doc. I am lookin to switch to oxycontin. my question is it realilistic to ask for that after having three knee surgeries in two years and severe arthiritis in both knees. also should I try for OC or MS.

Just lookin for any tips since I dont have much experience in geeting large amounts of drugs from doc.

PS> I love this site. I have spent about 13 hours on it the last 2 days.

I think it's absolutely reasonable to ask.....as to whether a given doc will say yes, that's another story. It's usually better to let the doc tell you what meds they're comfortable prescribing. At this point, you'd do well with just about any long-acting med although of course Oxycontin or Duragesic would be the best choices.

Yeah, you gotta be very careful about that stuff. Make sure you get all the details about what a practice offers and what its areas of expertise are before you commit to them for sure!

Sorry you got burned!

Hopefully you can find a better option soon. I have to say, in major urban areas like this you will have to be very, very careful to set yourself apart from the typical junkie appearance or the kind of doc you are hoping for will not make themselves available to you. Prepare yourself to present as well, and as clean-cut, as possible even though it will also be obvious that you are suffering and don't be afraid to show that as long as you can avoid seeming over the top.

Every doctor is different. Sometimes, if you start asking for specific meds like oxycontin, or MS contin, they may become suspicious. Others feel that this is no big deal. I would call the doc first with a different fake name, tell him you are a prospective patient in pain, and want to know his opinion about adequately treating pain with proper narcotics. Some docs will say, I prefer not to use those, but instead, a TENS unit, or antiinflammatory meds, or antidepressants. Others will tell you that yes, I treat pain appropriately , according to whatever the patient needs. That is what I reccommend you do. Also, when first going to a pain doc, try to have a clean urine specimen, or be able to give one clean. (fat chance, right)?. Because some will do a UA (urine analysis tox screen first), along with a pain agreement contract. This is to find out if you are abusing drugs like marijuana, or other pain meds, for which you may have no prescription. Later, then you can resume your other drugs. Some do not do the UA, some do. I just reccommend having the best chances of getting what you need. Also, they use a wong baker pain scale, 1-10 pain scale also to see how bad it is. If you are in minor pain, they will likely treat it with mild pain killers, and if strong pain, stronger meds. etc. Usually, at the beginning, they will do the weakest meds possible to avoid hassles from the DEA. etc. Also, They will almost always check your previous med records, so hopefully, no evidence of other doctors saying you were noncompliant with their pain meds. Lastly, it may take some time. They will likely give you weak stuff in beginning, but if you hang in there a couples months, then it is easier to have you moved up to the stonger meds, as they get to know and trust you. If they reccommend you go to physical therapy, etc., DO IT. If you do not go to your physical therapy sessions, they will likely see you as a drug seeker, and boot you or limit what you get. Do not run out of meds ever, or say you lost them or had them stolen once you get the strong meds, cuz this will also likely get you booted.
Good luck with getting your needs met.

not all pain clinics are into passing out what we call good scripts, so careful there , u might ask what your options are when it comes to meds rather than asking specifically

yeah,
that is definitely the way to go. Try not to ask for specific meds in my opionion, unless you are medically trained, and they know it. Otherwise, I think they will be likely to think you know "too much" to be just an average patient.
Good Luck.

I appreciate all the advice. i am a paramedic so i could probably get away with knowing more than your average patient. in fact i was given percoset before because i told the doc what i did for a living and knew what sched. II drugs could do and i did not want anything to do with them. after that he almost begged me to take them saying that for my pain they were appropiate.

unfortunatley one of the nurses from another doc that i was seein for the same thing was hired by this doc and she remembered me so i got busted!!!!!

is that dissapointment in yourself or that you didn't score?? ha ha!!!

yeah i have the access to viles of morph but that is so monitored and there are only a hand full of guys that have access that they would eventually catch me if i did anything. pretty ironic that i have the legal power to push the same medication that has my life bound up in heavy chains.
