Just like the title says, is there a generic Opana IR? If I am going to get my insurance to cover it, it has to be a generic IIRC. So,what does the board say??
Thanks!

No, Opana does not come in generic. It just came out a few year ago so it will probably be quite sometime before there is generic. I remember reading that Impax/Dava applied to make a generic version and they were denied.

Generics were halted by a lawsuit and agreement reached no production til 2011.

As indicated by other posters, there isn't a generic opana. IR or ER. One would think that an IR would be available since oxymorphone has been around for ages. But I guess our buddies at the DEA and FDA know best...(insert sarcasm phrase of your choice).
The ER's are a little bit cheaper than oxycontin. The IR's are very expensive. So, unless you have good insurance, this wouldnt be a good option.
It is very strange that someone couldn't come out with a IR generic version. I mean, there aren't any special process to release the drug like the ER's would.
PG
It will be a great day when Opana is made generic for those in chronic pain.

Sorry to bump an old thread, but swim's doctor said that the generic form of the IR was coming soon. Actually it was supposed to be out in June or July but I haven't heard anything yet. Swim will ask at her appt tomorrow and report back!
Dumb-dumb...aka swim, forgot to ask at her appt today. I'll try to remember next time.
p.s. I would have edited my previous post instead of making a new one but didn't see the option available.

I've never had the pleasure of doing Opana so I don't know much about it. I know that there are no generics and that Endo is the only company that makes 'em but I was looking at the imprints and it seems like they have two different pill imprints for each strength. (Extended Release)

Why would the only company who makes these pills make 2 versions of the same drug? Any ideas? (Hope that wasn't too confusing...I'm a little lost myself)

The reason that there are two different imprints is because Endo changed the style of the pills. The EXXX pills do not exist anymore. The pills being made now are numbered on on side with the dosage and shaped like a stop sign. I believe the reason they were changed was a problem with the identification numbers coming off easily. Don't quote me on that part but I believe I remember reading that somewhere. As for generic Opana's I don't think it will be much longer. It seems like Opana is being prescribed more and more because the street market is seeing more. The stigma of Oxycontin and the fact that the DEA is coming down hard on doctors prescribing it has lead many doctors to prescribing Opana. And once the drug is being prescribed more it is only a matter of time before generics appear because there is money to be made. I believe the patent is out at the end of the year.
