I was really really really into hardcore stuff a while back. Was a big Underoath, Norma Jean, all the way to As I lay Dying and All that Remains.
I like a lot of stuff.

04-05-2009, 08:40 PM
1. Ozark Mountain Daredevils
2. Nirvana
3. Miles Davis
yup, Miles Davis fucking kills it... Have you ever heard his pangea album? crazy shit
I don't know how to narrow this down to just three, cause it will change in like two minutes...
1. Old Dillinger Escape Plan
2. Sonic Youth
3. Jesus Lizard
yup, Miles Davis fucking kills it... Have you ever heard his pangea album? crazy shit
Let me look for it, I'm sure I have, I'll just have to give it another listen. I downloaded all of the Miles Davis albums and have been listening to them chronologically without reading reviews or synopses of them before hand...trying to emulate what it would of truly been like to have the Miles Davis experiment as he evolved in real time.
Every Sunday I listen to Kind of Blue. I know it is the quintessential Miles Davis album, but it is just so, so great. And ONLY on vinyl of course. Mmmhmmm....a Sunday morning in Spring, a nice little chunk of smack and just kick back with the windows open on the couch with my dog and fade off into Kind of Blue. Bliss.

i will never understand this fascination with records/vinyl/whatever y'all call em now
i understand OWNING records because they can be worth some money
and listening to them if you don't have another recording of the same shit
but this "only on vinyl" or "it just SOUNDS better" i don't understand
"this is my favorite band who i love to listen to
but instead of digital music or cds with clear sound,
i will ONLY listen to them on a skipping crackling obsolete medium
because after all, it sounds better":confused:

New formats are just too clean for some music.I remember hearing exile on main street on cd and it was just sad.
Sadly,I sold all my vinyl a long time ago. It's heartbreaking selling much loved records just for score money.
Third eye blind. because SHELLY likes them
Pearl Jam. There music speaks to me sometimes

I'm still having a hard time picking my third, so i dont know if this is against the rules or not, but for my third, i pick all the bands that have been mentioned previously by other members. I listen to all types of music, i like everything, so its hard for me to really narrow it down...

Hi Shelley........Your right those who didn't grow up with vinyl records will never understand.
You know only records that are not taken care of skip and crackle
Records sounded great.........on a good system.
Then there was the foremat of an album.
The album cover was as important as the disc inside.
You could read the lyrics and other info without a magnifying glass.
I don't know.........I still enjoy records. They were a big part of my youth.
But then records........like me........ are getting old and in the way.
1.) Nirvana (of course, hands down best band ev4r)
2.) Megadeth
3.) In flames
4.) 311
I don't really listen to nirvana all that much anymore but when I was growin up they were IT for me..
Megadeth #2 cause they've been around forever, and keep coming out with new stuff that TOPS their old stuff, which is very very difficult to do.
If nirvana were still makin records I think they could do this too, cause with them it just got better and better, cept even if Kurt didn't off himelf I'm sure they would have just broke up and never made another record again anyways, since he had wanted to quit for a long time prior to dying.
In flames cause they're one of the first metalcore bands that basically pioneered the genre, and still around today, also with them every cd gets better and better and they stay true and original
311 cause they always come original :D I'll always love 311. It's sad that so many bands tried to rip their style.

old LP records are making a comeback. bands today will sometimes record and print songs on JUST VINYL. i also saw this show i think on discovery, this vinyl factory has been increasing their production of vinyl records steadily for the last few years. apparently there is more depth, or channels, or whatever theyre called, that can be recorded and played on a vinyl record.
i believe its the only old format of something that hasnt completely died out after the new format took over.

Quite a few to choose from..
Besides (for me at least) - choosing a favorite band is like choosing a favorite day of the week, every single week..... in my opinion
Tastes evolve (yep, almost like the living organisms, Shelley :) -J/k, Shell - don't go all confrontational on me now)
emotions change,
and moods swing from high to low to 'inbetween'
So yeah - i have a quite a few bands that i could start listing - hard to pick a favorite when there is variety
The bands that i like are usually unique and hard to compare.
(Scuze my snobbish tone here -but that's the way i feel, and no i'm not saying i'm better than anyone here) - each band that i listen to has something different to offer in terms of both lyrics and music/melody/rhythm/mood
I hope/assume the same goes for all or at least most here, though
so i guess i'll just go ahead and list the 3 bands i've listened to most over the past few days
Mudhoney, Sonic youth, Pixies

It generates charts based on your listening habits, will show you what bands and what tracks you listen to by week, month, etc.

Choosing 3 is BRUTAL aahhh shit
1. Bruce Springsteen - at first I was going to pick Dylan because this pick is based on "lyrics about people" and he's got lots of songs with different characters small town, big towns, and in between. I consider Dylan's place in music more important but Springsteen I like the sound of better.
2. Animal Collective - someone just mentioned them a few posts ago. I am just "discovering them" if you will. Their albums are very dense - the type of stuff you need headphones on to hear all the little parts and blips and clicks. They have the type of records that take an entire year of listening to to get to know each song through and through so I'm picking them based on being "dense"...
3. Miles Davis - I can't say that I really like jazz all that much but I am growing into it. There is something about it and I have seen people get hooked by it and they quickly become rock music casualties. There is a giant body of work, that is what seems appealing as well
Oddly nothing "hard" made this list although I am sure there is a metal band which I would add here and prob in the place of Miles Davis.... Metallica, Slayer, or or In Flames....

THREE? Are you serious? I can barely pick three genres that are my favorites. I will always have a love of the Dead, cause of this one hot summer day in the rain. Started groovin to Jaco Pastorius a few years ago when I decided to try my hand at the bass, which I still suck at, so yeah, I dig jazz when I'm in the mood. The Band is pretty awesome, and Robbie's solo work impresses me. The Beatles evolved into something really awesome in their later years. The sitar in rock? Amazing! Andres Segovia was a hell of a guitar player. Satriani is fucking amazing...Stevie Ray Vaughan was a brilliant bluesman, but then again, so were Robert Johnson and Buddy Guy...
Jesus I better stop now before I write a book.

1. Whatever Shelly does not listen to.;)
2. Whatever the kids in the mall with tight jeans don't listen to.
3. Whatever feels good at the moment.
Everything is too subjective. For example, Led Zeppelin is not in my 'top 3' or whatever. But, have you ever done the deed with "Dazed and Confused" on in the background? Or driven down a highway doing 100MPH with Motorhead as loud as it will go? Or slow dancing in the back yard to an Elvis ballad?
It's all about creating the perfect storm. When everything comes together just right and the music feels like it was written for that moment.

Typically I'd say (and the first 2 never change):
1) Beatles
2) Nirvana
3) Led Zeppelin
3.1) The Clash
There are many others I love equally, but I'm trying hard to follow the rule of 3. So many other bands / peeps move me: Clapton, Sabbath, XTC, Smashing Pumpkins, MGMT, Misfits and a hundred others.
I'm big into underground grindcore / metal / hardcore stuff too, so my top 3 there must be separate:
1) Discordance Axis
2) Circle of Dead Children
3) (older) Pig Destroyer
1. Death
2. Morbid Angel
3. Dimmu Borgir
Really tough for only 3...
Bright Eyes
Wilco
The Roots
Sublime
too many more.

1. Motley
2. The Clash
3 Rancid
Honorable mentions: GnR, Ramones, TArmy, Neil Young, Bob Dylan, Nekromatix, English Beat, Smiths, etc.
Easier to list my "HATES".
Styx, Journey etc. basically every single corporate cookie cutter band that sounded the same.
Hate most East Coast rap. I don't understand how some became popular. Wu Tang clan and shit like that is garbage. Making up words that don't exsist just to complete a rhyme is ignorant to me.
Don't get me wrong, the EC did produce some shit I love like DMC, NbyN, and all that.
I absolutely hate Nickelback, and most crappy R&B/Pop JR High School hit makers like: Justin Timberlake, beyonce and that shit too.
Man, narrowing it down to JUST three is pretty hard. So I'll just list what's been on heavy rotation for me, lately.
• Looptroop.
• Doomtree (the record label, and all of their artists.)
• Braille.
....But there's a grip of other shit, too. Yeah, I'm an underground hip-hop fiend. Lol.

I have recently TRIED to get into the newer stuff to "update" the shit I play on air, but the problem I run into is, when I hear something new, I immediately think to myself, ok this was stolen from so and so from back in the (insert decade here). Yes that actually happened the other day. I picked up Death Cab for Cutie (their newest album, fucked if I remember the name), and first thing I thought was... Wow, this sounds like REM from the 80s. Maybe I really am going deaf and I'm crazy, but listen to the new album and say it ain't so. It's not the only time, just the most recent one, and without drugs my memory really is shit.

Like what ya like guys, but don't say that there's no good stuff to listen to nowadays. There are plenty of artists from the past decade that are genuine, with varying degrees of talent. Taste is subject, ya know? I may really enjoy something and you can think it really sucks, but of course there's really no right or wrong. :)

Agreed - there is some REALLY good music out there. Live music is still kicking.
There are some new bands that just blow me away. I'm a sucker for the older stuff -
but gotta respect some of the newer bands. (past 10 years)
Genuine is a good word MA. I look for the honest and genuine artists - and they are out there.
Just got to look for 'em.
I'm not talking bubblegum radio pop either.....
edit: oh yeah, I've been listening to Gomez quite a bit lately. They are fairly new and talented.

since ICP isn't considered a band I will leave them off the list. This list is in no particular order.
1. Metallica (mostly around the And Justice For All and Black Album era)
2. Alice in Chains
3. The Who
* Honorable Mention: Pearl Jam & System of A Down
I don't have 3 favorites more like 10-20..
Brotha Lynch Hung- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g0s6HRa3nf8
much more...
even though he is not a band but a rapper Brotha Lynch Hung is the shit.....my favorite rapper has to be Tech N9ne tho....u listen to Tech squareone?

Emo? Apparently you know nothing of punk music. Hate it all you want, I feel for you, you have a right. But to classify it as Emo is not only comedic, it is ignorant.
You're free to like what you want, but trying to put down a band like the Clash or the Ramones is stupid.
ICP is a novelty act. Not even music.

yea i hear ya shelly, like older punk is okay like sex pistols and whatnot but i still dont listen to it, but all new punk might be horrible.
yea when it comes to rap music i hate all the generic rap, i like the versatile shit like tech cuz he can rap about anything and does, he is so different from everybody else out there. i mean what other rapper wants to do a song with slipknot and system of a down for his next album? tech has gone on record numerous times saying that and i think thats the shit.
and with kmk i like songs like "peace not greed", "bump", "tangerine sky", "fuck the industry 2", shit like that, thier most recent ablums are just all about weed, which is boring. i went to a concert 2 summers ago that had blaze ya dead homie, big b and dirtball, hed pe, tech n9ne, and kmk, and as soon as kmk came on i went to the bar and hung out with big b, dirtball, and jahred from hed pe and didnt bother listenin to kmk at all cuz there is only a handful of songs i like.
and i love it when people say ICP is a novelty act, thats why they have owned thier own record label for 20 years now, have 4 gold and 3 platinum records, have total record sales of over 15 million records, own a wrestling promotion, a production company, a clothing line, and so much more. novelty acts dont stay around for over 20 years and every album they put out sells at least 250,000 records with no radio or tv help and nothing from the mainstream. novelty acts die after a couple years, learn a lil more b4 u criticize.

I love when people say they don't care what other people think, yet when you bring something up, they write a 10 page letter on why ICP is the worlds #1 band, rap group, country artists, clowns etc. Anyone with the terms: "POSSE" in their actual band name are just that, clowns.

Wow you make it sound like such a dirty little secret. Personally, I don't care for that style of music, and the face painting gimmick was done before as well. As far as that goes, lots of people can't stand the Dead. I love 'em, and have for 20+ years. For that matter, you said something about the Dead Kennedys, while I personally see nothing wrong with idealism, except that it's a waste of effort. I like em, because their music brings back memories of childhood. Changing the world through lyrics isn't going to happen when you only know one chord, anyway.
Y'all are absolutely entitled to like whatever you want. Just because I personally think they are no-talent hacks is no reason for your opinion to be any less valid. Music is 10000% subjective, and I really couldn't tell you why I like a lot of what I do. Many people hate jazz, and that's their right. I'm not going to get myself all worked up because someone says it sounds like random noise. I think the reason why some people rag on you clown fan people is because it evokes such a vehement response, and what comes across as justification for something that is, as I previously stated, completely subjective.
For that matter, I can sit and listen to Ella Fitzgerald for hours on end. You might think to yourself "How can you listen to that garbage?" To which I say to you, at least she was talented. And we could go back and forth and back and forth and never agree. I've started rambling now, but I think you get what I'm saying.
