Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak has been made into a live action film by director Spike Jonze - apparently he has been fighting with the studio, who were not happy with his version, claiming it was 'too dark' - what did they expect from the director of Being John Malkovich & Adaptation, as well as some incredible music videos- Beastie Boys' 'Sabotage', Bjork 'It's Oh So Quiet', Weezer 'Buddy Holly', daft Punk 'da funk, etc...Where the Wild Things Are was my favorite book as a kid, if it were any other director (except maybe Peter Jackson) I'd have rock-bottom expectations, but Spike Jonze has a very unique style, looking at the trailer I think he may have been the perfect choice...

God damnit, if they make a movie out of that book and it's NOT dark, I'm kicking someone in the nuts. I grew up on that book too and it WAS creepy and that's what made it so cool.

Fuckers. They turn everything into marshmallows.

Nicely; I love the work of director Spike Jonze and picked up a DVD collection by Palm Pictures which featured a disc of his music video directional work on which was compiled and distributed a few years back.

As well as nycjrt, this book was also a favorite of mine growing up and I still love it, and recently I have read this book to my Niece more times than I can count as she has caught the magic of the tale as well it seems. Good times.

I'm interested in this one; with a classic tale meshed with such a creative director, the results of the end product should definitely be interesting. Here's to hoping that Jonze's gets his overall stylistic say in the final cut for production, dammit.

One of my fav childhood reads.Loved it so much that I hung on to my copy through all the chaos that passed for my life and passed it on to Milly recently.

Terry Gilliam is another that could have made an interesting movie from the book.

That trailer does make it look really good. Usually I'm not one to get excited about the newest releases in pop cinema, but Jonze is an amazing talent.

When I was a kid Where The Wild Things Are was my favorite. Reading it was cool but it was the creepy illustrations that really grabbed me.........keep it scarey.

I absolutely loved this book as a kid. I loved how I could always imagine a forest growing our of my bedroom with wild abandon.

But I can't see how he will take a ten-sentence book and turn it into a go-see movie.

I think Spike Jonze is a good director with a great sense of style, but I have to admit I kinda think that movie looks a bit dumb. We'll see though. You never know... Has Spike directed a feature leangth movie without having Charlie Kaufman write him a crazy, twisted script? I don't believe so.

I've got the toy figures
sitting atop my bookcase.
I wonder if new figures
will be in the works?

I saw a trailer for it on Ellen the other day and I thought it looked really good.

Totally agree with that marshmallows comment, I'm sick of that type of BS. Kid's aren't even allowed to win competitions or games anymore, "don't want to hurt anyone's feelings you know" what a load of crap.

thank god they chose spike jonze, and are letting him release the version he wants, and not the marshmallow-fluff one the studio prefers. most kids' films these days are so predictable and boring- however a few good ones have slipped through the studio net- i just saw coraline in 3-d, thought it was really well done- visually it was just stunning, and i was impressed with how well written it was- dark and frightening in all the right places, balanced with hope/wonder/enjoyment- like all the best stories are. that said, i had to sit through several previews and there really are some shit children's films coming out- even the previews are boring and predictable, and an insult to the audience's intelligence. the only one that looked interesting was tim burton's '9'.
