View Full Version : itchies
with the exclusion of opium and heroin, most opiates give me the itchies. any tips or suggestions out there to help reduce this for me? usually its just itcies, but i have gotten actual hives before.
could this be a sign of an allergic reaction, or is this somewhat common?

Itchy's are my way especially after I've done a good IV shot of Morphine to know that I got a hell of a good buzz coming and I didn't miss however I do think you aren't talking about that itchiness.Your talking about the back of your legs, back etc.I've heard of people taking Benadryl but that just makes me tired and then I lose my buzz. I just ride out the itchy's and take it as a sign that I've just gotten a hell of a good buzz and I scratch my legs sometimes till I rip the skin to bleeding but that only happens very rarely as I can't afford to remain that high.Usually thats my beginning ofd the month buzz and after that I more or less just try to make it so I don't have to go through these major ass withdrawals. Now the itch you get after you've just IV'd a good hit of morphine doesn't last more then 45 seconds and you itch like crazy.I mean your neck, under youre tits if you have 'em.especially between the thigh area but like I say that only lasts a few seconds and I love that feeling cuz I know I hit a great vein, and that its only a temporary itch oh yeah w' the IV shot the bottoms of your feet and also the palms of your hands will itch like a son of a bitch.Hope this helps.

Brap, sorry, I didn't get to you sooner, but with the site down and all.
I did not really understand your post. You said you have a script for something to help with itching? I would fill it depending on what it is.
Somni suggested Benadryl(diphenhydramine) and that will work well. 50mg's should work well enough. You could take 75mg, but I would not recommend going over 75mg.
It is common to have itching with opiates, especially if you are administering them by IV. With IM injection, some get only itching at the site and some all over.
I believe that opiates can cause an increase in histamine release which leads to itching, but I may be wrong. I may look it up and post it if I have some time later.
Try the Benadryl and take it about 30 mins before administering your opiates. It takes about 15 mins before onset of the drugs action, but I would go about 30mins before to be sure.

I reread your post and you mentioned hives. While it is most likely a histamine reaction, if you start noticing an increase in the amount of itching or an increase in hives, especially if they are spreading to more general areas of the body, you should stop taking that drug and talk to your doc or see one. It could be an indication of something more. I have not run into many who have an actual anaphylaxis response to opiates, but ya never know. Anaphylaxis is an allergic reaction to drugs, bites, latex, etc. that causes respiratory distress and respiratory arrest.
I would just watch for a reaction and take the Benadryl.

benztropine is an antiparkinsonian drug but has anticholinergic effects. I wouldn't take this drug for anything other than what it is prescribed for.
I really didn't understand what you meant in your post regarding a script. Maybe you could clarify and let me know.
Any drug can cause itching or puritis. While it is typically seen with opiates, any drug can cause it.

Are you currently taking the Benztropine or have not filled it? You said that medication caused the movement disorder you have now? Benzotropine is prescribed for drug-induced movement disorders. Side-effects are generally dry mouth, constipation, and you may notice that if you do take it, that you won't sweat as much. Which is typical with drug that have an anticolinergic effect. They cause a drying like effect and with summer coming, if you do take the drug, just keep yourself cool when it gets really hot. We cool our bodies when we sweat.

i have been on bentrapine for awhile. some other medication caused me akathisia which did not stop after i stoped taking the meds(its perminant now). the side effects from it are worse then any other antichlorenogen ive ever taken(including datura). surprisingly enough, it has no efefct when i get itchy. nothing.

me and diphenhydramine aka benadryl (same "added" in tylenol PMs to help you sleep,, better off just buying a generic benadryl, fYI)
anyway, benadryl is avail OTC...but I DO NOT get along with this med...ugh it almost like w/ds before I ever knew what they were...could NOT sleep, made it WORSE...kinda drugged but too wired to sleep AWFUL, and restless legs type shyte...
I order atarax, vistaril...generic name is hydroxyzine...comes in all kinds of varying dosages, but I find that about 50 mgs. will POTENTIATE the effects of my hydrocodone or whatever pain med and doesn't take away from the "good" opiate feeling, you know? benadryl jacks up my happy place, even if not opiated  UNFORTUNATELY, for some strange reason, this antihistamine/anxiety reliever is still by Rx...
