WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. researchers said they have identified the compound in grapefruit juice that affects how some drugs are absorbed in the body and said on Tuesday it might be used to help lower dosages for some patients.

Very cool.
This finding of course is the scientific proof and validates what alot of us already knew about grapefruit juice. However, now that they have determined the actual chemical that effects the drugs in our system.. as the article states it may now be possible to add this chemical to formulations of meds that need a boost!
Nice find satori! Kudos man!

Not trying to be a bubble burster however long ao they found that grapefruit juice will cause certian drugs to be released into your system in higher doeses and for longer periods of time. Read the precautions and interactions for a variety of drugs ranging from Methadone to Nexium. So this is kind of "old news" perhaps doctors are going to try and use that fact to their advantage now, instead of telling patients prescribed these drugs to "just avoid grapefruit juice." Maybe that is why this is recirculating.

Of course grapefruit juice is old news so u didnt even know what bubble you were trying to burst :) haha. It was about the fact they isolated the chemical IN grapefruit juice that makes it work.

Actually I was trying to be nice and simply relate information which I do beileve is the purpose of this site. However if indeed I were trying to "bust your bubble" so to speak then it would be busted.

I noticed you live in NC too, after i just posted i viewed your profile .... Virology???? I <3 you. I mean if thats true i dont know some people just like to claim they are majoring in virology for the glamour. After i read Richard Preston (everything i could find that he wrote) i was hooked so i started picking up any book i could find on the general field at borders. I almost went back to school!! Almost.

I wasn't aware that Virology was glamorous in fact I find it to come off to most as the opposite. However I feel yet another change coming as Immunology just appeals to me more. That and I have moved to the Triad, so time for a change of school. If you would like I will photocopy my past degrees, driving records, birth cirtificate, grades you just let me know. Now if you would like to pick my brian that I have no problem with.
What part of North Carolina do you grace with your presence might I ask?

Another love connection on opiophile. And this one involves two people, ie., not a person and a substance.

Believe me... there is those relationships which involves two people, people and substance (other than opiate) and even people and world.
Grapefruit juice contains chemicals that are metabolized by the same enzymes in the body as a lot of drugs, for instance the cytochrome pathway enzymes CYP3A4, CYP2D6, CYP2C8 etc.
These enzymes are in the body specifically to metabolise foreign substances into a form that can be eliminated from the body easier, usually by making it more water soluble. Some of the reactions that occur are N-dealkylation, O-dealkylation, S-oxidation and hydroxylation. Many times a drug then becomes water soluble and is eliminated much faster than would otherwise be possible.
Most are oxidative reactions, produced through evolution to react to things encountered in the past such as toxins, etc. Plants over time, develop alkaloids to keep from being consumed, and animals produce enzymes to metabolise those alkaloids, negating the effect the plant "intended".
If you really want to use something in this manner, there are drugs available that are metabolized by these same enzymes, meaning if you take drug x the enzymes metabolise it, and then when you take drug y 30 minutes later there are no enzymes left to get rid of it, hence it becomes more bioavailable in the body, and more gets to the brain.
Some that come to mind are cimetidine, quinidine, fluvoxamine, paroxetine, and a bunch of others.
Anything that is metabolized by an enzyme can be considered to be an inhibitor of that enzyme.

If you ever receive a scrip for opiates, most of the time (or all the time, I havnt seen a scrip in a long time, my dealer doesnt give them to me in a bottle, lol) I believe I always remember seeing on the side of the bottle a little warning that you should avoid taking grape-fruit, or grape-fruit juice while taking this medication.
I always thought that was funny, they are like saying, dont take this with it, or it will be like taking 2 at once, whoooo-hooooo

I like the Ruby Red grapefruit and I find it helps increase the Morphine buzz but maybe i'm imagining it,However I drank 3 Ruby red grapefuits after eating 2 120 milligram Avinzas and I actually got so high I puked.

Yea that can happen! I used my normal dose of poppy tea quiet a while ago (after drinking a lot of grapefruit juice) and.... well it made a huge impact.

I can't read the article because it has expired. However, I spoke with a research pharmacologist about this and he told me that grapfruit juice does not affect opiates. It does have an effect on some benzos but not opiates. While it is true that there is some action on metabolites that are involved in opiated metabolism processes ... drinking gfj will not give you a more intense high. In some cases it can actually decrease the amount of time you get an effect from an opiate (I'm not sure I could explain how this works.. so you will have to ask a pharma) but it will not have any positive effect on an injested opiate in spite of what everyone is saying.

Sorry but I do think you are wrong, and I do think there's plenty of research and science on the whole metabolite thing... and if that's not enough, I believe their are a couple-hundred here that'll attest. Oh, and I think there are labels on several opie-pharms (yes?no?) about gf juice...
Not trying to be an asshole, just would hate for you to miss out on some goodness... besides, the white coat does not an intelligent and correct statement make (I'm wearin' one now, and that last one made no sense... perfect example!)

I would ask your pharma to try it before he says that again. I've never used gfj cause I didn't know about it most of the time I've used, but these people here know what they are talking about. period. I trust them over a 'medical professional' anyday anywhere.

this is the part where I get to say, "I'm sooo excited. And I just can't hide it. I'm about to lose control, and I think I like it."
anyone know who sang that one?
