Hey all, I caught a news program last night and i cant remember the title exactly but it was about the amout of people growing bud in northern Ca. The show spotlighted the city of Mendicino. I have visited some friends that live in Arcata, Ca that have grow operations like they showed on the show and i cant beleive first of all that these people agreed to nationally advertise whats going on for one, and the laws that are in place and the way its stretched and bent to make huge amounts of money.

I'm sure all or most of you guys know about being able to grow and posess certain amounts of medical marijuana there and how its kinda common for people to exceed those laws and grow ALOT of bud and its not a big deal. But what i didnt know and learned last night watching this program gave me blended feelings about it. There are "coffee shops" where you can buy your med. bud and its pretty common, you just need a medical chit which you can aquire easilly(all my freinds have them). But the STATE laws say you can only grow X amount and these places are openly growing way more than that, which is fine. But the state makes these places pay state sales tax on all sales, the shop in question paid in excess of $100,000 last year in state tax....Now these businesses are illegal under the Federal Govt....but they also pay Fed. tax... which shop in question paid in excess of $500,000 last year!

This makes me happy and pissed at the same damn time. Its illegal but over looked as long as the govt, state and fed are being in my opinionpaid off to look the other way. In the interview the reporter asked the guy who owns the shop how much bud does he sell in a average tear and he wouldnt answer because "he didnt want to taunt the DEA" lmao.

I'm sorry i dont have any real info about the name of the broadcast but i was inebriated when i watched it. I'll try to find links for it. I'd like to hear what you guys think in the mean time and if anyone else caught this.

I think people that want medical marijuana legalized should treat it with a lot more respect than they do now: they advertise it CLEARLY for getting high (nothing wrong with it, but let's be realistic), talk like there's NOTHING bad that can happen with marijuana, that it should be available to everyone including kids, etc. .

I'm in favor of a much more medical system. It's a drug. An incredibly safe drug, but still a drug.

Nobody's going to take the medical marijuana movement seriously until they start seeing "normal" people using it, who don't advertise it on their clothes, and basically, don't look like they're hippies. Now, nothing's wrong with doing any of that, but it's exactly what the anti-marijuana legislators want: to marginalize people who support it. make it look like it's just a bunch of "hippies", and make the people who AREN'T, but still need medical MJ afraid to say so because they don't want to be associated with them.

So while I think sale of marijuana should be 100% legal to everyone over 18, right now I think it's most important that people who are suffering without it, get their hands on it. And the best way we can do that is to not blatantly make a mockery of the medical system (as if it doesn't do that to itslf, HAH) by selling it in coffee shops, to kids, in brownies, etc. .

The people showed on this program were very norml looking people not too hipped out at all. My friends are the same way, you couldnt tell by appearances they grow or even smoke. I absolutely agree that alot of the people make a mockery of what the intent of med. bud is about. I just cant believe the sack on this dude that let a reporter and camera crew come to his place where he had a huge crop and explain in detail the MONEY part of it. They kept comparing it too that show Weeds of course, its just gonna get all fucked up eventually. I also couldnt believe the Fed was taking tax money from an obviously blatant illegal operation by the Feds standards anway. Crazy shit.

That's interesting, do find a link if you can. It's not that I think there's anything WRONG with being a total "stoner", it's just that if everyone sees pot smokers like that, they won't take it seriously.

The problem is, when you see a stereotypical stoner, you associate it with weed smokers. But when you see a normal person who just happens to smoke weed, you have no idea. by "you" in this case i mean the general public.

"Marijuana Inc." it was on MSNBC last night. I DVR'd it cuz Nip Tuck was on, but I watched it today. All about Mendocino county and that 60% of the residents grow. There allowed to grow 20 plants. This guy had 20 plants with a average yield of 2 pounds. He says his garden was worth about $100,000. The last part of the program was about some dude that used to smuggle weed through San Fran.

It was a great show. Too bad I cant burn from my DVR.

I have experienced this first-hand, as I have lived in Mendocino county, and knew several different people who were growing....some very small time, and others who had set up many indoor grows and were running them simultaneously- bringing in LOTS of money.... I had my medical license, which was very easy to get ....($100 , California Drivers license, a 45 minute lecture, and a signature).... and did a small grow, not breaking any guidelines set up by the provisional and state code for a medical grow......

When I first moved to California it was amazing to me how many people I met who were growing..... It truly seemed like EVERYONE was doing it..... seriously like 60% of the people I met had either invested the couple grand to get set up and were earning a nice supplemental income, (going by the guidelines, or slightly over..) or they were more into it, running 12 light grows (or more), and some were involved with multiple rooms....... It was all overwhelming to me, and fascinating at the same time......

I learned a lot about growing great pot....I miss it now that I am not there any more, but i really needed a break from the whole scene.... I may want to go back sometime..... It was a one of a kind place that I will never forget.....

The local policy with the cops seemed to be that they did not care to give anyone a problem as long as they weren't involved in any way with METH or GUNS....(NE Meth kindgom/capital... meth was also , unfortunately, EVERYWHERe....very bad up there....)...... or if they were Mexican Guerilla growers who were growing on state land........ These were the people they were really after...... The 40 yr. old yuppie woman who had a little six-light scene that pulled 14 lbs. of Snowcap every 3 months? They could care less about her... because of the money that was going back into the local community.....

These people were buying local food and products with the money they made growing weed.......and plus there was the taxes (for those who DO actually sell to the dispensaries..... real dealers who move product out of state pay more than the local dispensaries...)...... so people were happy ... ESPECIALLY PAcific Gas and Electric!!! Oh mAn!!! These guys are the real winners in the medical marijuana growing sce ne........ Indoor is the year-round solution.... you KNOW PG&E aren't gonna turn in their best customers!!!!!:D

Yeah that guy "said" he had 20 plants.lol. The part with the guy who was smuggling was pretty good too. I forget the numbers, but he was making like 500 million a year smuggling into san fran bay from south america.
