View Full Version : expired morphine ?dangerous
if someone hypothetically had a intact ampoule of morphine with expiry date ~20 years ago which was found buried in dirt, would it be a bad idea to use this?
specifically: would it be possible for mptp to develop as a breakdown product in this hypothetical ampoule??
cheers

I can assure you that the Morphine would not have converted into any MPTP... probably the only thing wrong with it is loss of potency, I still wouldn't IV it though. I think I would evaporate all the liquid portion of the ampule on the stove (I posted how to do this recently in a thread... can't remember which one) and work with the powder left behind insufflation-wise.

thanks again everyone who pm'd and/or posted ~ a little info from experienced people is way better than learning everything the hard way, lol....

Generally, expired meds are fine. The expiration dates are just mandated by law, they don't necessarily mean anything in the real world.

Interesting side note on expired meds, I have a freind who still has sample packs of Allobarbital from the late 60's in near mint condition (the packaging). Not worth taking but quite cool to have none the less.
chemboy: how can you be sure re mptp ? are the two molecules just to0 unrelated for a random process to link them? are you as your name suggests, a chemist?

:cheeky1: errr MPTP is from a bad fenatle (sp?) synth, it has absolutely Nothing to do with morphine
liquid suspensions tend to break down faster than pills but it wont hurt you if you drink it I have herd of older morphine/landum being used with success
