A good thread on Harm Reduction and needle xchanges in the United States, seems pretty comprehensive, mostly focusing on San Francisco...but this guy had worked in the field a long time, and this article talks about drug use among HR workers...

sad, as raz said he seemed like very decent guy- this is also an excellent reminder to be really really careful when drinking while doing dope- i love to do both, it is all too easy to forget how dangerous the combination can be - please be careful (if you are doing anything, especially combining...)

Yeah: they touched a couple of times on the kind of outlaw appeal that heroin has for people who should have "known better..." And it was a long time ago, but I think/suspect that was one of the reasons I got on heroin too...I was in an environment where "toughness" was everything, and the potheads were seen as sort of 'hippies'...while the small group of guys who did heroin were often much more 'hardcore' and I think at a certain age, there is an appeal to doing something irrevocable...who knows, but this article chronicled the man overdoses by people who had started or were active in needle xchanges....

Hey thanks for posting this, DF - very interesting/sad article.
When I was actively doing harm redcution with the street teens it would sometimes come bite me in the ass - I'd be showing kids how to tie off & register (using saline, naturally:)). I would jones SO BADLY at looking at their juicy young veins (aging junky vein porn - there's a thought!). We felt it was important for kids to know how to get off safely because we were having a bunch of people with abscesses from misses.
I know I helped teach several kids how to do it right, but it di take its toll on me in increased cravings.

oh SeVeN, I did it for a LLLOOOONNNNNGGGGG fucking time after treatment - I'd sit in groups in the rehab house staring at the young kids veins & daydreaming........
Thanks God I don't do that anymore.
I have relapsed on pills in the past, and I am on suboxone now, but it has been 10 years now since I IV'd anything.
