:D My happy December present is that my second degree drug felony conviction from 1999 has officially been expunged. The paperwork was sent to all the required agencies on 12/17/08.
My family and I have been doing the happy dance at home. I'm not planning on changing jobs any time soon, and this one hired me despite being a dangerous felon, but I really am looking forward to the next time I get asked that question and I can say NO.
I recommend the expungement process to anyone who is eligible. Check your state laws. We hired an attorney and it turns out that we really didn't need to. It's an exercise in patience, getting the OK from all sorts of agencies, then filing with the court and then getting the decree around to all the involved agenices again.
But it feels really nice, just after the 10 year anniverary of my arrest, to have my slate wiped clean. Now I just need to keep it that way. Thank you, Suboxone for helping me to do that.

Wow Poppy, I'm really happy for you. That is some special Christmas present!
Last time I got a contract I was checked for felonies again and somehow I always think those papers will come back stating that I do not have clean slate which is totally ridiculous since I haven't done anything illegal since my last fit of shoplifting 20 years ago! Junky paranoia I guess..
Enjoy it and Happy Christmas to you & furry companion!

Congrats. What a hell of a feeling! Believe me I know. Contact NCIC through your local police agency and pay like five bucks to get your background check. This way you can be 100% positive its gone through. My record was supposed to be expunged but wasnt until I took charge and made sure of it (years after the expungement was supposed to take place).
Again Congrats.

Congrats Poppy, I know someone who has considered this for drug involved forgery over ten years ago in ca, but hasn't attempted it, just researched a little. I'll pass this and seven's experience along..

Nick, the wise man. You have a seriously sadly brilliant idea there.

No offence but it is a waste of time and effort (in my view). Number one, even having it expunged , it will not erase it from the databses that count, and only really would be advantageous in the civil service sector and even there it is going to be visible but no longer grounds for ineligiblity in the hiring process.
Well, it MIGHT have another advantage as well in that if you filed an appeal to cross into some anal retentive Little America like Canada or the UK you could probably gain admittance. Me? I have not been hampered enough to care. I travel fine and the only problem is searches in and out of the States, and that would not change after having it expunged because your record never disappears for the relevant security databases.
I am glad that you got what you wanted though, that is cool and at the the right time of year.

Having more than one felony, in more than one state, it's useless to even try for expungement, for more reasons than are worth posting...but I also agree that--w/the exception of entering Canada--it has never slowed me down, really...I've done well in this world when I set my mind to it, and have been lucky, and it's mostly perseverance, and we all have obstacles...for some reason I think of the first black commercial divers: everybody had told them about Louisiana not hiring...blah blah blah...but the two I met just tried harder, became better divers, and overcame their obstacles...everybody in life has things that can defeat them...I've never missed meal, have had great careers, and have traveled all over...and maybe *not* getting on heroin-maint up in Canada might not be the worst thing that ever happened to me...I was out bodysurfing today, an offshore breeze, nice little waves, then ate me some huevos a la mexicana over at this joint near here...life ain't that bad...my brain is the real problem...even felons in the West live better than most of the world's population in troubled countries...no sweat....
but aside from my own life: I'm glad for you Poppylover: in your shoes it was the definite right thing to do, and your persistence has paid off...

Congratulations! Must feel like getting a REAL second chance.
If this happens in a state like California, expungement would certainly not be a waste of time IMO, since the original charge is actually dismissed.
In other juristictions it seems like it would be pretty useless.
A felony conviction is a huge problem for some people, for others it has no or minimal impact on their daily life.
Some industries are required to have certain insurance and none of them will hire felons.
I know I would have to change careers if I was convicted of certain crimes like manufacturing a controlled substance, or explosives etc.
If that could be reversed it would seem priceless not worthless.

That's too bad Poppylr...If you had left that felony on your record, you could have become a rapper with more legitimate "street-cred than most mainstream rappers!" :D I'm just joking though...we were talking about this over in the "rap" thread. With mainstream rap, your rap sheet is more important than your musical talent.
But seriously, that is really good news. I'm glad that you were able to get that expunged. Take care of yourself,
TT
Hey pistol packin Grandma, well done.....
Who knows wat happens behind the scenes with L/E.....But i bet your gonna feel good sayin "NO" whenever asked if you have felony convictions...And thats what matters, how you feel about it....
You feel good, den dats enuff for me to say "Yey, nice one, mazletov an all dat"....And only you know if it was worthwhile gettin it expunged...(man "Expunged", seems a lot like, "colostomy" Or "colon cleansin"......
Well it is gettin ridda shit aint it..?:)......Fuck em all.And congrats...

"Waste of time and effort" depends on individual circumstances..
Housemate wants a 13yo forgery felony off her record just because it looks better on a job app - she's smart and quite capable of making good money, but she won't lie on an app (I would), she also can't get financial aid, to finish a degree at UC, because of the conviction (thank fucking Bush for that one - ya, take away federal financial aid for people who are trying to turn their lives around YOU FUCKING PRICK - I hope the door smacks you in the ass and causes brain damage on the way out of the Whitehouse you fucktarded, douchebag, asshatted, moronic, redneck spit stain - I say we give him a cap gun and drop his silly ass off in Bahgdad).
I digress..
Anyway, because we're in CA - I can't (legally) have a gun in the house (I've never been prosecuted on a felony except as a minor), whether or not she even knows about it. I think that's fucked, and honestly it's a point of contention between us, because I want one anyway, but she won't go for it - granted it is her that goes to jail and not me if it somehow got back to the Sheriff.
Ya, I could get one and hide it, but if I bought a gun, I'd wanna be hitting the range and shit which means sooner or later, she'd figure it out...
I have a good friend in another state. He picked up a domestic once from his drunk, psycho ex (no offense, shannon). YEARS later, he comes home to three black ghosts in the driveway, it was the ATF and they took his guns!!! (I think maybe 2-3 handguns) It had been YEARS, and the charge was total BS but he didn't beat it, probably didn't try, I remember that he wasn't in jail very long..
I don't think expungement is a waste under a lot of circumstances..

I got popped on Dec. 2004 for misdemeanor trafficking Mary J(under 8 ounces) and possession of 2gs of yay yo(Class D felony), do you think I will be eligible to get my charges expunged?? I got off probation last month. I'm sure I'll prob have to wait a few more years huh??
Getting it expunged has been my plan from the get go. It SOOO hard to find a job with that HorseSHIT on my record. Those fuckers look at me like I'm THE Druglord himself supplying their kids with drugs and obviousley getting told....uhhhhh....yeah....we'll keep in touch. Uhhhhh, yeah I'm sure you fuckin will...bitch...
