Ok, so Benzodiazepines are active because they act on the GABA receptors in the brain... as does alcohol to a different extent. Health stores such as GNC and the like sell gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) in 500 - 750 mg capsules as a "dietary suppliment". I have read mixed reports as to it's ability to cross the blood brain barrier and am unsure but I have been taking 750 mg - 1.5 g of the stuff in an attempt to quell my anxious ways, with success. I have yet to get a noticable buzz from them (no more than well-being) but they do help when I am required to do oral reports in front of large groups and that says alot being that I normally shake and mix up my words and generally make an ass out of myself in the process. My question is this, if I am getting a noticable (albeit mild) benzo effect from them, would they potentiate the Benzodiazepines? The question boils down to does it cross the BBB or is it simply a placebo effect with what I am experiencing with the GABA pills. The way I see it, if the GABA does cross the BBB, even in small amounts, it should potentiate all GABA receptor active drugs... being that there is more neurotransmitters to be sucked up and used by the receptors. I don't know as I have only sparing knoweledge in neurochemistry, but it seems plausable to me. Anyone have any practical experience in this???
