......huh?
You must also be pretty lucky, there are only 200 odd diamorphine rxs and they're letting the programme wither on the vine. It's very sad.

nah this is some new incentive. they are trying it out now for 2009

I know, but there hasn't been any real political will to drive this since Blunkett left. It's a case of what they say they want to do and what they actually do are two different things.
Throw in the recession and the budget cuts that will be coming along soon..........
Bottom line is how many folks actually have a script and it's a number that keeps on going down.

yeah but its enough to make me want to fuck my maintenance script off for a few months, get back on the tack full-bore for a few months then go back to my doc and try and steer him into volunteering me for the programme

You'd have a pretty good chance. You're biggest problem is geography,I don't know any consultant writing in that part of the country, but if you're prepared to travel it's possible.
You'd just have to be patient and "play" the game.Kinda sucks that you have to play the game, but you know how it is.

It truly is just incredible (in my eyes) that a government would even humor the idea of injectable heroin maintenance as a treatment option. I know here in the states the "slippery slope" game is played too often, I mean...some jackass makes the statement that "when does it stop? If we give heroin addicts their junk, then what's next, giving a serial killer a gun and an "easy kill" shopping list"?
as with most anything, I believe that the regulation and standardization of many "illegal" things would be far more productive than throwing endless tax money at "preventing and deterring" such things.
Anyways, it would be nice to find that somewhere in the world, things are progressing instead of regressing.

if you could see what smack has done to england you would see why the government are willing to try anything to sort it out

If you could see what smack has done to Chicago, Baltimore, Seattle, Washington DC, San Francisco, Detroit, NYC/NJ, Camden, Philly...you'd wonder why the government isn't willing to try anything to sort it out.

I heard that!
Too bad shit like this would never happen here.

I don't think it will happen in the U.S....we just aren't a naturally compassionate country...we tend to feel that we are all drivers here, and give us a gun and a little determination, and we'll be alright...it's not true...but it's our myth, and "we" like it...
Not me, of course: I was broken on the U.S. heroin wheel a long time ago, imprisoned time and time again, lost all hope, nothing...
And when I was young, I got caught up in what at the time was called the "Heroin Epidemic" in Vietnam, and all the people in the U.S. were wringing their hands about the poor veterans coming home all addicted, etc...but that's all they really did: wring their hands...and figured we'd buckle down and pull out of it, get a job, marry sue, and get on with our lives...
But it didn't happen...I read a book way back then, oh, around 1972 or '73 about american and canadian addicts who had left for England to get on the old doctor perscribed heroin--and cocaine--available in England...but the sixties and the drug culture were already changing it...Nick has posted several times about the last of the docs from that era, and stuff...But I was young, and newly strungout here, on dilaudids, actually, and felt, like most young people, that I would beat the game, get off the shit, and get a life...it never really happened...I'd get years here and there, and be pretty successful...but I never made it away like I thought I had...
And when I first joined Opiophile, I was looking to go somwhere to get on heroin maintenance, and it's why I think so kindly always of Nick, since he treated it as a serious question, sensed my desperation, and told me the different possibilties available...
And by that time I had heard of the NAOMI heroin maintenance program up in Vancouver Canada, and figured up there would be easier to come home if my aging parents needed me, so up I flew...and was turned away due to criminal past....
So to me, it's just a pipe dream...helps me hang in some days, when I get blue, I say, well, stay sober, maybe you can visit England, but I too, have heard what Nick has said, and felt that maybe possibilites were better in Spain or Germany, which--among other european countries--also had heroin maintenance programs...
Problem--for me--is *most* of those countries are *very* aware of foreign junkies flocking to their shores--think Amsterdam--and have laws in place to make it--as we surfers say: Locals Only!
Ah, Enough...I'm an anglophile, but I'm a yank, and must make do...2 weeks clean...

I'd really love to hear some more stories from this era if you have the time to tell them, Mr. Duck...especially about the experiences of heroin in Vietnam and just about the "old school" scene in general, how shit was back then.

I remember reading once that the U.S. has 60 percent of the worlds lawyers. Says a lot.

Hey buddy, I just wanted to say congratulations again on getting off methadone! I can't even imagine that (and for everyone else that's done the same) I bet you have some very interesting stories of the old skool era and life as a opiophile (both good and bad stories). So again congratulations and I hope whatever happens life is good to you.
I've always wondered what pure Diamorphine is like, i mean compared to the stuff we get off of the street. I guess the stuff I get here on the east coast can be pretty pure but still. Nick maybe you have some insight to this? Just curious.

I think theyve already recruited the 150 people for that RIOTT trial, and only a small percentage of them will actually get diamorphine amps, your more likely to be successfull trying for injectable methadone,as a side note, they decided the uk freeze dried amps werent large enough for the trial and so have gone for switzerlands monster 10 GRAM diaphin amps!! please,if anyone can find a picture of one...!!and also a certain uk university is trialling intranasal diamorphine as an alternative to injectables,as one of the down side of these trials is it keeps people injecting as a necessity.

To be honest,I prefer good street dope(brown) to diamorphine.Diamorphine is too clean,it gives you a great hit and after 2-4 mins you don't really notice it-till you start to get sick about 6-8 hours later.Which is another problem,it has no legs.

Hmmm interesting, from the sounds of the description, it kind of sounds like hydromorphone, but I have never had pharmaceutical diamorphine so I don't know. Thanks for the response though.

The RIOTT trial is a lot of rubbish. It's an exercise in kicking the "ball" into the long grass. Why do we need a trial?Much information on diamorphine already and many folks rxed it for a long time.
Diamorphine trials are VERY annoying.

I prefer opium over clean morphine myself, those extra alkaloids must make for a much better experience.
Nick, you're on morphine amps for maintenance, right? You should ask for pantopon or omnopon amps instead to get those extra alkaloids. Also heard pantopon has less side effects than straight morphine.

I'd have to check, but I don't think we have pantopon.Omnopon would be possible, not sure it's any good or better IV though.

it doesn't amaze me that govts are attempting iv heroin maintenance
but what DOES amaze me is that they are giving it out for free
i mean, tazpayers are picking up the bill? :)

Well, most folks that would "qualify" for diamorphine can't afford it by that point and it still makes good economic sense, every $ spent on treatment actually saves $3.It costs more money to put someone in jail for a year than it does to put them up in the hilton.
