Unique hydrocodone effect

With my recent few high dose hydrocodone experiences, I experienced something that I remember experiencing way back when I was new to the game and had no tolerance too, but had forgotten about.

When you take an oral hydro dose, as it's hitting you with it's rapid come up that happens suddenly, there's a strange pressure and taste slightly behind and above the throat and behind the nose area. it's a taste / smell that occurs distinctly OUTSIDE both the nose and mouth, so that makes me wonder if it's the brain mistakenly thinking it's getting taste, smell, and pressure messages from a spot where it normally wouldn't get those messages due to the opiate.

Oxycodone does this too, but it's not as potent with oxycodone.

Even morphine and other opioids occasionally cause this, but only in high doses taken all at once, and not every time.

With hydrocodone, it happens practically every time, and with oxycodone it happens most of the time.

The effect is the strongest when I take these two drugs on an absolutely empty stomach, which allows for a sudden come-up. You guys know the feeling, you go from zero to high as a kite within five minutes if you took 'em on an empty stomach. It's in these situations that it's most noticeable. It's actually kinda pleasant because it happens RIGHT before I start to feel the euphoria, usually 10 seconds before the first waves of euphoria hit me.

I'm curious if anyone else feels this effect from opiates, especially hydrocodone and oxycodone.

Yup. Lots of time when I take an oral dose of opies I still get the feeling or smell. Pods do it for me too when Im not doing them all the time.

I've actually had the same thing happen other times, it's almost like I'm tasting/smelling/feeling it from inside my head/face. It's very difficult to express the feeling into words.

Yes, that's exactly it! It's INSIDE your head region, but not in the nose or mouth, it's very clearly outside those two spots. And there's pressure too, a pleasant pressure that radiates up into the brain. Happens a few seconds before I feel the first waves of the opiate glow begin.

what that taste/smell is is the apap. i used to get that too, and associated it with the hydro comeup. then one time in rehab i took 4 extra strength tylenol and got the same taste/smell. quickly found out it was the apap (acetaminophen). now i hate that occurence.


seven i also know what youre talking about, which is something different. i dont know if the OP is talking about that, or the apap one. i have no explanation for what youre talking about, but i do know what you mean.

happens almost every time i take hydrocodone---seems to be exclusive to hydro, not so much for oxy--but it is as if ur brain is experiencing a kind of low-grade synaesthesia whereby it interprets a certain non-taste related stimulus of the hydro *as* taste...and yes, when u experience this, usually in another ten minutes or so, u are good and high

When I shoot dope I taste/smell it, especially taste, and when sick I can taste/smell that too. I don't know what the hell to even call that taste and smell, its like rotten death sweat or something like that, in the same region of the inside nose behind the throat area as the dope taste.

I used to get a pressure in the back of my neck when I first got a hook up for morph, and I used to actually taste it just as it was kicking in. I use to love those two sensations. Oxy's idea of synaesthesia makes sense to me.

i used to believe this 100%... i get the "taste" from straight APAP (w/o opiates) too. but recently i had to take a few vicoprofen (w/ ibuprofen rather than APAP) to get my sick off. and to my amazement, i got that fucking taste... maybe it was a mind-trick since i always expect it when taking any hydrocodone product. but it makes me wonder.

i get that too, but this hydrocodone thing, at least to me, is a rather singular sensation of "taste." it's like it really does happen at a slightly different spot than that usual back-of-the-throat spot where i taste a shot, or the sickness. i like the way someone described it as coming from inside your head. that's as close as i could come to describing it too.

I agree that it's probably not the APAP, RxQueen. The times I've needed to do CWE because my desired dose was really large I still got the feeling I described. It wasn't a shoddy CWE that only got the bulk of the APAP out either; the time I'm thinking about, I chilled that beaker of dissolved hydro/apap pills until it was starting to ice up on the surface, then promptly filtered.

Also, I've taken 4 extra strength (2 g) tylenol/apap plain pills before for real pain like headaches and never experienced anything like this feeling.

Hydrocodone certainly seems to have this effect most reliably every time, but oxycodone, including APAP-less OCs, also produces this sensation around half of the times I take it. For other opiates it's much less common IME, but I've felt it from pretty much all of 'em at least once.

These things point towards it not being APAP, but I won't totally discount the theory. It'd be really interesting to get to the bottom of this. I wonder if the medical community is aware of this s/e from patient reporting? Maybe not, since people who take hydro for moderate post op pain or moderate CP tend to take smaller doses at once than recreational users, reducing the chance of noticing this.

its funny cuz years later to this day, if i take they hydro( for whatever reason it happens with the 750s for me more so than say norcs) anyway, if i smell it, i know im gonna be high.... but if i dont smell it, i know i aint gonna feel shit.

its funny when you think yer alone in somethin but then someone does actually know what yer talkin about. i asked my wife if shes ever smelled it. its so hard to explain cuz its not like you can sniff it and smell it like a fart..... its ust there.... what is it?
