I have communicated with a few chronic pain patients that depended on loperamide in high doses on a daily basis in addition to their other prescriptions.
but that is a crappy suggestion alone,
one person in particular was just as worried about quitting loperamide, as they were worried about getting cut back on their M script. they were taking about 198 or less milligrams of loperamide a day. the problem was they were going to have a cut back in income, and wouldnt be able to afford both morphine, and buying all those boxes of loperamide. they swore the loperamide added pain relief, and ability to augment their opiate reaction.
I suspect that darvon/propoxyphene is similiar enough, that compound is less toxic than demerol in the sense that it doesnt cause a build up of metabolites in the system. a few people have told me though that darvon actually is one of the drugs that people considering euthenasia or suicide seek out, it is toxic in amounts that are not too hard to save or find on the street.
I used to take this stuff daily, when I was younger. it actually was something I looked forward to. and it works relatively well....its a prescription drug that many dr's are willing to treat pain with, rather than script better pain killers. for some people darvon is a fine maintenance pain reliever....I have known several people who'v taken it for years because of car accidents and other problems
but some people cannot stand darvon...
it is a strange drug to take on a daily basis. I lived with a nurse, who knew alot of DR's,and she was a swinging earth momma straight out of the 70's. compassionate person. anyway, she was well scripted, saved the good painkillers like D's and M for herself, the valiums, various knock out suppositorys, and to me she would give the darvon scripts....big bottles with pink pills in them...and alot of acetimenophen, I was a drinker back then, and am lucky I am still alive considering the reaction of alcohol and acetim.
I have only had merepidine once...I was in the emergency with a crappy skate accident ankle. they shot me in the rear, and did that twice, as I didnt really feel much. the DR said that I should be dizzy and screwed up from the 1st, there was an anti nausea medicine in there too, maybe phenegran or similiar. leaving the place in the morning, I didnt feel to great, the stuff was pretty weak. I couldnt get my script till around 10 am....but then I was not doing well. the script wasnt for merepidine, probably hydrocodone, yea, lorcets it was I think.
anyway, without much experience otherwise, its hard to say how I would take to demerol.
I dont really think that there is anything stronger between darvon and methadone that is scripted much....in some states you are probably more likely to get Fent than methadone.
my state doesnt have methadone for drug treatment, only for back pain.

How bad is your pain? Because it can be scripted in Canada. If you're in good with your doc maybe he can go this route. I dont know, Im in the US but the info is out so I figured Id pass it on, worth a shot...
"Veterans Affairs Canada authorizes the use of meperidine in special cases only. The Department does not authorize the medication for chronic pain, but may approve it for moderate to severe acute pain when other narcotics do not work or if they cause problems."

Hope that helps...

i have done demerol to get high--got it from a cancer patient on hospice care---very enjoyable but i wasn't taking it for pain----myself i liked darvon-darvocet it worked for pain relief from a gunshot wound to the leg----but i would drink 2 beers take 2 darvocets then drink 2 more beers and that would put me out for 4 hrs----i remember that my dosing was the same time the twilite zone came on--twilite zone -darvocet and beer good times;)
Demerol is strange. I have virtually no opiate tolerance compared to the rest of you, but it hardly affects me. I recently was in and out of the ER for a week straight (meningitis) and each time, they'd give me a different rx for the pain (CSF Leak). I was given given Demerol near the end, and it really did nothing for my pain. I couldn't imagine taking in on a regular basis for chronic pain, but everyone is different. Worthless IMO. To me the Dilauded/Fentanyl was way more effective (course that was IV)...
Anyway, hope you get what you need.

HI NV
first off i hope ur feeling better? meningitis can be a real bitch-- a couple of my friends had it and were in and out of the hospital a few times for it
and by "CSF," do u mean "cerebral spinal fluid" ??
but in regards to the original question, and Demerol, I had only received it once, in an emergency room setting... I had a back injury from work (when i used to be a plumbing contractor) and my back was hurting really bad--i ended up pulling one of the long muscles on the side of ur spine--and they gave me an intramuscular injection of 35mg Demerol, and x-number of milligrams of an NSAID called "toradol" and I must say, the demerol was pleasant, but at the time I had experience w/ opiates, and to be honest, aside from much needed pain relief, its "high" wasn't really anything to write home about....possibly demerol just isn't as fun as some of the other opies,, or maybe 35mg wasn't high enough of a dose, who knows? but for me, it worked for pain, but for recreation, I would just as soon take a couple oxys or something like that....I really thought the injection would feel a lot more euphoric than it did...oh well, live and learn, i guess!

The reason the demerol didn't feel too great is cuz they'd be giving you dilaudid and fent, they should've started you out on demerol then moved on to dilly then fent.
And OxyC, you didn't feel the demerol cause 35mg isn't shit. I've had 75mg IM before and it was one of the best opiate highs I've ever had

Okay, it's settled then :-)
You know, bigNasty, I suspected at the time that maybe 35 wasn't enough,, but since i had no prior experience w/ demerol, or really any injected opiate, I had nothing to gauge that 35mg against..
and I was kinda baffled too, b/c demerol is something that u always hear about on t.v. and such as it being a narcotic that is highly sought after in E.R. holdups and shit...the liquid dem and morphine always gets mentioned by name...
and you're not the first one to tell me that in appropriate doses it really is euphoric and every damn bit as good as one of the other strong opiates...
damn, leave it to the ER to under-dose me!! like i said it worked well for the pain, but left me hanging...dammit now that you told me that,, I would like to get some and try a 100mg shot in my shoulder:D:D

I did the same thing. I was on IV Demerol while hospitalized. I was enjoying it enough, but would've preferred morphine, or something... But they tried some IV Toradol on me and it worked GREAT for the pain. I just didn't get high at all... So I claimed it wasn't working and asked for the Demerol back.

Hey Tony- Yeah, feeling better, thanks. It is a bitch, and honestly I had conflicting diagnosis that that's what it was... one doc said yes, the other no. I've had it before, when I was pregnant, and it was a horrible experience... this was no different, although I recovered a little quicker this last time. Yes, CSF is Cerbro Spinal Fluid... just like it sounds, the CSF Leak is where the fluid leaks out of the hole they use to do the lumbar puncture. I've never had suicidal tendencies, but honestly the orthostatic headaches and pain from the leak made me want to kill myself. <-- I also think I've suffered some permanent hearing loss from it too.
Anyway- thinking about it too, like others said, I'm sure I wasn't taking near the dose of Demerol I should have, especailly compared to the consant IV I was getting in the ER. I had more success with the Oxy I had been prescribed the day before. At the end, the demerol was pretty much only good for maintaining, and tapering myself off the opiates after I had the blood patch and started to get better. I was having pretty significant w/d's from the week long stint w/ Dilaudid so it did help. I didn't get too much Fent, which is a damn good thing, cause WOW. All I have to say...
I've also gotten quite a few shots of Toradol from my regular doctor- maybe I wasn't getting enough, cause it hurt worse than anything where they injected it in my muscle. I dunno, I am kind of a baby :)

Demerol is still available by rx in Canada. It is rarely used for chronic pain because of it's toxic matabolites.
