Partly correct bro.1984 was written in 1948 and is a critique of totalitarian society, particularly Russia.Orwell changed 48 to 84 and set it then to show where totalitarianism could lead.

Check out Animal farm.

Ive read Animal Farm by Orwell and Brave New World by Huxley. Both deal with similar themes as 1984. Good to know there's another reader out there.

Sure,we have a few fans of the written word here.

If you like Orwell, checkout a homage to catalonia and decline of the english murder. It's all good stuff.

I had to get my parents' written permission to read books such as these in high school instead of the boring crap they were assigning. My mother thought it was hilarious that they were withholding books to "protect" the kids. Like they couldn't go to the public library and get the same books.

1984 is an awesome must read. The best part I think is how they change words around, and into new meanings. I.E. everybody and everything today is terrorism or terrorist. 1984 is spot on.

Brave New World was interesting. I didnt think it was near as good as 1984 though.

Political doublespeak really pisses me off, like the Clean Air Bill lets them

dump more pollution in the air and the Save the Forrest Bill lets them cut

down all the trees. Total BS.

Fuckin love that book, if more people read it they wouldn't stand for the invasion of privacy going on today. That book is scary in how accurate is was predictiing the future. America is exactly like that now, the perpetual war on terror, the constant making of arms and munition at the expense of the people. Wide gap between the rich and poor. The fact that the media is owned by a few corporations with the same interests and ideals. The elite control every aspect of society and they want to keep you dumb, uninformed, unhealthy, overworked, poor and overstressed with constant distractions like entertainment. See only the educated, confident, healthy, with a bit of time and money on their hands can rebel, think about it.

I'm not a big fan of Huxley's fiction, especially after he got into tripping, oddly not many folks write good fiction after taking psychedelics. His historic biographies are very good, try the devils of loudon or grey eminence.

Island is a pretty good antidote to brave new world.

True, but Island is much closer to his fiction than his factual/opinion work and yeah, the doors of perception and heaven and hell are fine, early works on hallucinagens.

Just wish I could get some mescaline and try that little experiment out.

Synthmorph, you got that right.

1984 is one of my all time favorites. Everybody should read 1984.
I am a George Orwell fan, I read Animal Farm and many of his other stories and novels. I didn't know he inverted 1948 to 1984, that is interesting.

The movie 1984 is quite good too.

Also fan of Huxley, I liked Island and Brave New World, I got to check out the others Nick mentioned.
But Brave New World is kind of a positive utopian society.

1984 is straight realistic hell and it is too true and I fear as inevitable as human nature is flawed.

Rockbottom, this is a good book and topic for discussion!

They're both excellent, devils of loudon covers politics, religion and mass possession in a nunnery and grey eminence is about father joseph,a guy well on his way to sainthood, who advocated mass religious murder a human paradox.
Rather than lord of the rings check out bored of the rings.A very funny tale of Dildo Bugger.Plus it's a lot shorter, not to mention funnier.

Well they are legal here, unlike the states but they are very expensive from the sources I've been able to find so far.
