This is pasted from another thread, but i think it will help a lot of people on this site and may be sticky worthy. it describes my abscess i got removed 48 hrs ago.
;)FIRST POST ON ANOTHER FORUM NOT KNOWING WHAT TO DO
just wanna start this thread with a god dammit!.
on my bicep, close to the crook of my right arm, a bump arose. the bump is not HARD, but its basicly feels like a huge zit on my arm. its about the width of a half dollar and the height of like 2 1/2 quarters on top of each other. the bump is pinkish light red and warm to the touch.
---- I do not have a fever. I do not feel sick. I actually feel pretty good, except for my arm, which only hurts when i flex my bicep or brush the bump against my skin.
until this morning, it hadnt really been bothering me. I woke up and today it HURTS SO BAD to move my arm.
there is no whitehead on it. ive been puttin neosporin on it (maybe stupid) and it seems like its dried out the skin, but this morning it seems like the redness may have spread just a tiny bit, and it started hurting.
i wish i could upload a pic. ive looked on the net for abscess pictures, nothing i can find matches what i have.
the weird thing is, the last time i banged up there was the 23rd of august. thats like 18 days. the bump didnt appear until a good 3 days or so after
has anyone here had an abscess and gone to the hospital? im 19 and im not so worried about my parents unless im gonna be in the hospital for 15 days like i read. wtf? and people are put on painkillers after. wtf?
i can make an appt with my former bupe doctor, he'll see me and either prescribe me something like antibiotics, or tell me to get my ass to an ER.
:) THIS IS THE POST AFTER I GOT BACK FROM THE ER
so i went to hospital last night. bump was getting bigger. couldnt fold arm, hurt so bad it had to be straightened out 24/7. pain was so bad.
there is something that unless u have had an abcess u cant tell someone. the longer you wait with an abscess, the worse it will feel getting it operated on.
i went in at around 2 am, got back in the ER around 3, got IV antibiotics. shot me up with morphine, and then operated.
and IT WAS THE MOST PAINFULL EXPERIENCE IN MY LIFE. imagine having a bump on ur arm that is huge and hurts bad when its stationary, and then having a FAT ASS needle full of novacaine stuck down in it, i cried like a baby. Then, i got a shitty morphine shot. because of my suboxone (down to 1mg, 1 pill left, hadnt taken it in almost 48 hrs when i went to the ER) the morphine shot didnt work.
they took a scalpel to it. i cried. it took em probably 15 minutes to work on it. they had a guy nurse hold my hand while i boo hooed and the female nurse operated on it. the slicing was bad, the pressure squeezing out the puss was the worse part. i was semi screaming. worst experience of my life.
after it was over they bandaged my arm, and i REALLY started crying. the hot nurse i had came in after it was over and asked what my pain level was, i started crying and she goes "oh, looks like a 10" and gave me another morphine shot. i dunno the mg but it was 2 of those little glass morphine vials. that did the trick
they have my on clindamycin (antibiotic). and percocet. i slept for 12 hours today. i have to go tomorrow and get my bandage drained (its leaking, big red spot on my bandage the bigger than a golf ball in size).
all in all, if you want someone to go to the ER with an abscess, tell them that the longer they wait, the more pain they will be in.
they said it was one of the worst they'd seen. the nurse that gave me the morphine shot said that she heard people talkin about it and that it was a bad one.
AND THIS IS SOME ADVICE I GAVE TO SOMEONE WITH AN ABSCESS WHO WAS THINKIN OF LETTING IT GO
i just got out of the ER 24 hrs ago for a horrible abscess i just let go.
the longer u wait, the more painful it will be.
does it hurt already. mine got to the point of hurting so badly that i could not move my arm out of the extended position
ask yourself, how painful would it be to have a 2 inch needle inserted into the middle of it. after that is done how painful would it be to have some doctor SQUEEZING the life out of it and pressing on it as hard as they can. does it hurt? everyday you go without medical attention the pain will be worse. also, with ur 60mg dilaudid a day binge do you really thing the ~30mg of morphine IV before the procedure will do you any good? NO. i cried like a baby. during and for about 20 minutes after the procedure.
your fine if your typing this (HE THOUGHT HE HAD A NEAR OD BUT DIDNT). you need to be worried about the abscess. describe it for me
hopefully someone with an abscess will read this and go to the ER. alot of the info i posted will help persuade people to go. this should be the thread that gets linked into a thread when someone thinks they have an abscess.
hey, and maybe even a sticky (i would clean it up)
