Hi guys, Yesterday I picked up my cat and the little fucker scratched me right in the eye, At the time I didn't think too much of it, but within a few hours my eye started looking pretty bad. My neighbor is a nurse and took a look at it and advised me to goto the ER because it looked so bad and was probably infected. Earlier in the day I drank some pod tea (first time in awhile) so I was buzzin pretty good and the stuff DEF masked my pain. The DR at the ER was pretty nice, he ended up giving me an antibiotic along with 10 t3s. I think I should of got something better then t3s for the pain but it sure seemed like this DR doesn't like to give out painkillers, So I figured I was lucky to just get the t3s (which I havent even filled yet). I asked the ER DR. If he thinks I might need surgery on my eye and he said he wasnt sure as of right now I have to see an eye doctor tomorrow to make sure the eye is actually healing. If my eye continues to hurt bad do you guys think I should head back to the ER, I mean do you think they would actually give me something worthwhile or not? I was also wondering if anyone here has ever had something like this happen to them, Any advice anyone could give would be greatly appreciated Im just praying that my eye heals & I dont need surgery. I really became exceptionally worried after talking to a member on here who pretty much had the same exact thing happen and he ended up blind in his eye. Once again thank you for reading this and any help would really mean alot. - Larry

Larry, I too would wish for better drugs than T3's but on the other hand, my nurse self doesn't want your pain masked too sucessfully. My reasoning is that if indeed the infection worsens, it will cause an increase in pain. It is important to know that to preserve your vision. So despite a legitimate pain source, I'd be real careful about getting high the next day or so. You REALLY WANT to know if the infection is worsening. so that you can get help ASAP if that happens.
I had a cat bite on my forehead & lower eye lid that actually had to be stitched it was so bad. I of course ended up with an ugly infection that required IV antibiotics for several days. However, it was just my face, not my actual eye ball.
Be very careful & stay aware. Also know if you complain about pain to get better drugs and you don't really have it you may end up with surgery on your eye looking for problems because your pain is out of proportion to your injury. That is a big red flag to docs to look for a serious infection. So BE CAREFUL about what you complain about........

Hey Poppy, Thank you so much for responding. I dont plan on taking any opiates today so I can see how bad the pain really is. All of your advise is right on the money thank you for taking the time to write everything out. Right now the only thing I'm taking is "Ciprofloxacin ophthalmic solution", 2 drops in my eye every 2 hrs, I haven't even slept yet because I dont want to miss a dose. Hey Poppy, Do you know of anything else I could do to help the eye heal better? Im up for any suggestions, I'm just pretty worried about possibly losing my vision in the infected eye, Thanks Again - Larry

What an ungrateful furry little freeloader. you just can't trust those little suckers.
i don't have any info on treating your eye injury but might i suggest taxidermy to avoid future problems.
Eye injuries are scary , i hope your eyeball heals quickly. i will try to send some good eye vibes your way....

That sucks, I hope your eye turns out ok. Poppylvr had some good advice there. Nothing more I can add.
& Please don't blame the cat.. it's in their nature to be unpredictable, whimsical little fucks... but I wish mine was still alive..
Get well and keep us updated.

Larry, it sounds like you are ding the right things. Keep up the antibiotics. Make sure you wash your hands REALLY WELL with warm soapy water before you touch your eye. Try to avoid touching the bottle dropper to your eye. You might warm pack (NOT HOT, just warm) your eye before doing your eye drops to possibly increase the antibiotic absorption. Finally, go to sleep, my friend! You need your rest to fight the infection. Set your alarm clock so you won't miss a dose, but please get some sleep & make sure you're eating healthy to give your bod the tools to fight off infection.
I am sending prayers for the rapid healing of your eye.
Pointy, as a cat lover I have to tell you that your post about taxidermy made me scream with laughter!!
PS: Larry, my hubby the medical provider reminded me - a SEVERE eye injury or infection, the kind where the docs really worry, would be SO EXCRUCIATINGLY PAINFUL that you would not be able to keep your eye open long enough to post on the comp. It would have tears streaming from both your eyes AND your nose, would be very puffy and bright red & hot. So the fact that you can post is VERY GOOD NEWS.

I can't offer you any assistance just my sympathy - this is coming from a guy with only one eye. You must keep on top of this and i pray that you don't join my club. I hope ER goes well for you.
I love cats, too but they sometimes misjudge things.

Larry,
Eyes heal faster than any part of the body. Did the Doc say it was a corneal abrasion? These heal in two or three days. If there is damager to the structure, not just the cornea which is the outside layer it will of course take longer. The Cipro solution you were given is pretty much the gold standard for eye issues. I can't imagine what you would need surgery for unless the eye was torn open. Corneas heal very very fast. It most likely isn't even infected, but antibiotics are prophylactic. I know it can be excruciating pain wise. There is another med that comes in drops called Acular which is like Toradol that will reduce the inflammation. I think the Doc was a little alarmist as these virtually always heal without incident. Even though they are some of the most painful injuries known to humankind. Whatever you do, Don't patch it unless the Doc does it. It can cause more long term damage.
Get better,

Hi Larry , Sorry to hear that Bro. After you are sure there are no infections
or other Bad stuff going on you might ask the eye doctor for some Cocaine
eye drops, but he'll probably give you some other kind of numbing drops
instead. Corneal abrasions are some painful shit but they don't usually
give anything stronger than Vicodin or Percs at the ER unless you got
kidney stones. Good Luck hope all works out OK.
Hay Chipper Havent seen you for a while, Good to see you back.

I once got a metal shaving lodged between my eye and my eyelid, and I got IV Dilaudid (score!) while they flushed my eye out in the ER.
Good thing though, it hurt like a motherfucker.

I JUST WANT TO MAKE A SMALL STATEMENT ABOUT ER VISITS AND SCRIPTS.
I FIND THAT IF I AM THERE FOR A REASON OTHER THAN MY CP PROBLEMS, IM ALWAYS SURE TO TELL THEM I AM A CP PATIENT AND ON OPIATE TREATMENT, SO I HAVE A TOLERENCE AND OPIOID DEPENDENCY. THE DRS. SEEM TO BE A LIL MORE LIBERAL AND LET ME TELL THEM WHAT I WANT.
IT HAS GONE THE OTHER WAY, WHERE IM TOLD TO GO SEE MY PM DR. BUT FOR THE MOST PART I USUALLY GET TO WALK OUT WITH 30 10/325 PERCS. PRETTY MUCH THE STRONGEST THE ER CAN GIVE OUT.
HOPE MAYBE THIS INFO HELPS SOMEONE, I MEAN ITS WORTH A SHOT, THEY SEE YOU AS HONEST AND NOT DRUG SEEKEING. LEMME TELL YOU I AINT NO STRANGER TO THE 2 CLOSEST ERS TO ME.

Hey I just wanted to give everyone an update, This afternoon I went to see the Eye Specialist. Im very thankful that I will NOT need any surgeries and the eye should hopefully heal on its own within the next week, I have a follow up appointment with the DR on Friday. I was very honest with the eye doctor and told him how I have been in ALOT of pain, and while the eye has healed a little bit Im still in just as much pain as I was before. I told him how the ER Doc gave me some t3s, but they werent helping in fact they were just hurting my stomach. So this asshole tells me since narcotics arent helping, You should try naproxen. I told the guy how I have been taking that type of stuff (naproxen, advil and tylenol) and he tells me how APAP isnt that good for pain and how the Naproxen should def help, I also made it clear to him how I havent been able to sleep for the past few days besides for a few shitty hours because of how painful my eye is & he was pretty much just like whatever. Dont get me wrong this DR was a pretty nice down to earth guy, but I felt like I was just wasting my time trying to get any pain meds or anything from him. Before I left I told him "If my pain gets any worse, Should I just goto the ER?" He proceeds to tell me "No, Just call my office" I dont know what to make of that, but Im gonna call his office tomorrow, Im not looking to get high just a little bit of relief so I can fuckin sleep. He did give me another antibiotic / steroid which is called "Tobradex" eye drops. Im gonna call his office tomorrow afternoon and see what he says I just cant figure out why no one has given me any pain meds, Every Single Nurse / DR whois seen me remarks on how painful my eye looks, I might go back to the ER tomorrow if my eye still hurts... Any Advice or anything would be appreciated... Thanks as always - Larry

Well, aint' that a bitch...I would be a little upset too if you have the doctors, walking by saying, "gee, that looks painful!", but offers no relief. I guess I've been lucky in that, the couple times I've had to go to the hospital, the nurse was all about how people shouldn't have to suffer through pain and pumped me full of dilauded
Unfortunately it sounds like getting pain meds for this just isn't going to happen. If you push too much more with it you're likely to get more negative results, not positive....I know this is a "no duh" statement...but if you do decide to go to the ER again, make sure it's a different ER. :p
