BEIJING, China (AP) -- Chinese state media say an Asian elephant that became addicted to heroin at the hands of illegal traders will return home after a three-year rehab program.
Xiguang, a 4-year-old male Asian elephant, became addicted after he was captured by smugglers along the Chinese-Myanmar border in March 2005. The official Xinhua News Agency says the traders fed the elephant bananas laced with heroin as bait and to pacify the creature.
When Xiguang was found two months later along with six other captured elephants in China's southwest, he was suffering from withdrawal and was sent to a protection center in China's tropical Hainan island.
Xinhua said Thursday that Xiguang received daily methadone injections in doses five times larger than those given to a human and had fully recovered

My grandfather was a grumpy/mean old man and when he quit smoking my grandmother would grind up the valium that she had left over from a surgery and put it into the glass of tomato juice that he drank each night with dinner to get him to mellow out. She'd been doing this for 2 or 3 weeks when my mom told her that she shouldn't do it because the valium was addictive so she cut him off and he detoxed cold turkey without even knowing it.

my mom got me hooked on hydrocodone cough syrup when i was 8. they own a pharmacy and she started giving it to me to make me go to sleep after benydryl stopped working. anyway, she gave it to me for about a year before my dad found out (he's been addicted to vicoden for most of my life) flipped out and he made her stop cold turkey. i was out of school for a week with the "flu". i can still remember bits and peices of it. ive only felt normal with opiates ever since, and i havent been able to sleep thru the night without help either

You may be right that it sounds funny at first glance.
But I most definitely do consider it cruelty to get someone addicted on purpose and then make them go through withdrawals without them even being aware of being addicted in the first place.
It doesn't make any fucking difference whether it's an animal or a human being in my book.
