hold real still well taken off the turny, or maybe leave it on?

It was a couple months into IV use before someone told me that you should always take off the belt/tourny/etc... before you push off. There's also an issue with valves in your veins that will let blood come IN to the syringe, but then close when you push the dope in. Lack of info is a huge reason for most beginners' problems.

Try reading this:
http://harmreduction.org/idu/idu_manual.pdf

It's one of the best resources I've ever come across. I've managed to save most of the veins that were still working when I found this manual.

Good luck & Good hunting....

i stayed tied off when i banged up
made it easier when the coke made my hand shake
if i had to register while shaking, untie while shaking, then hit up while shaking...
hell, i'd never have gotten a good coke hit after the first

i'd say go for BIG VEINS not little bitty ones
after you know what you're doing, *then* you can hit your palms and wrists and backs of knees

if you pay close attention to the amount of back pressure on the plunger you can tell when your point is in or has either poked thourgh the vein or pulled out . If you are shooting and the amount of back pressure changes then stio shooting and try drawing a little blood into the rig to see if you are still in.

Sharp needles can slip a lot. I always held the rig in my whole hand and used mostly thumb with a bit index finger to gently and firmly control the plunger and once I regestered I would imject and wouldn't have moved the needle. Sometimes I would pull back half way through the shot to make sure I was still in.

I believe he means that, in time, you'll know when you're in a vein by how much pressure it takes to push the plunger in.If you keep shooting this will come in time.

Actually,Pointy said exactly what I would have.

Make sure you tie off with a belt or something. When you register blood don't push it all in. Do a little bit and then re-register to see if you are still in the vein, if you are finish the rest. It's pretty easy to tell if you are not shooting into the vein (it will hurt like a son-of-a-bitch)!
Safe shooting...

Put it in, register, carefully and slowly inject, the pressure should be normal (you shouldn't have to force it in, whereas if you've lost the vein / gone out you will), you will feel pain / burning if you miss, and if you feel that then STOP.

Also, what guage are you using? Lots of people like the 28's / 29's, but I always liked the 31's Ultra-Fines. If you have smaller veins (like I do) they're a big help.

in my experience, if you dont have a problem hitting a vein dont use a turny in the first place, it just makes the proccess more difficult

yeah fuck sharp needles, my veins are really slippery so i usually just file the neeedle a little bit on a spoon and it doesnt slip out of the vein as bad. I also have those terrible skinny "girl" veins or whatever you lucky fat roped bastards call them and sometimes the the gauge of the rig is bigger than the vein so i will register and still partly miss at the same time. my heart goes out to all girly vein tar users though, for real.

The thing I see most inexperienced IV users doing wrong is holding the needle at the wrong angle and therefore poking through the vein.

I still don't know quite why tar is so hellaciously hard on veins, and the surrounding tissues...I mean, used to be, only really old junkies had lost their veins, and had to hit ankles or in the neck...but now, I keep seeing and hearing of really young people, who do tar, and it just fucks'em up really fast...

I know one of the chemists on here probably could tell me what it is in tar that is so hard on tissue and shit...is it someithing in tar, or just the crappy cut? Because when I *first* discovered tar, up in Chicago area, around ten years ago, it was really good, and I don't remember any problems other than it was harder to *see* blood in the rig, since it's so dark...but up there, most people I knew, thought tar was better than crappy, cut-to-shit white dope...

Now Corpus Christi, I thought it wasn't as good, but border dope usually is crappy...

But California Tar: this is the worst shit...it doesn't give me an opiate buzz, anyway...more like it knocks me out if I do enough, but never get that euphoric thing, I like so much...and everybody I know who does it, quickly looses their veins, and often gets an abcess or two...and you know how it is, general public could give a shit less, so nothing we can do about it...not like we have a choice...but it forced me into methadone,,,which is probably a good thing, but what a price to pay...now even good nurses in the V.A. hospital, sometimes have to take 3-4 times to find a butterfly vein...sux....

Hey Duck , thats what she needs one of those butterfly needles with the little tube on it.

Then she doesn't have to worry so much about staying so still.

You know what I'm talking about ? One of those jobers like they use

in the hosp. when they take your blood and the veins real thin or have to

take like ten tubes.

pharm- a butterfly would be ideal for me. my veins are terrible, and i knew that before i started, which is probably what kept me snorting for so long. nurses always bitch when they have to draw my blood cause it takes like an hour. a friend used to hit it for me everytime, but he's gone now. the only ones i can hit are in my hand, and i KNOW it was in there today, i even stopped halfway and RE-REGISTERED, but i still got a white lump, but it wasnt the whole thing i know

anyway, is there any way i can get a butterfly? i figure it would arouse suspision to just walk into the drs office and ask for one

Just getting a white lump doesn't mean you missed.

It's probably a histamine reaction to the the little bit that was on the end of the needle when you pulled out.

You can always check register to confirm as you go.

Hey P.o.P. , There's a big old picture of a butterfly needle in RobotJones

Harm Reduction Manual , it says ask your needle exchange if they have

any. Good luck. Good Info RJ.

Does anyone else think the link to "Getting Off Right - The IDU Manual" from my above post would be a good STICKY? Or maybe it already is. Just wonderin'. I think everyone who's thinking of IV'ing for the first time should definitely read it. Hell, even someone who's IV'd for years can probably learn a thing or two that helps them.

For me the big problem is, sometimes I'll be in a vein and register and only a very small tickle of blood comes back yet when I take the pin out, blood gushes out. if I really really think I'm in, I'll push a little and if it goes in smooth and doesn't hurt I'll know i'm good. But what happens to me is I'll get really high and can't tell if it's hurt so sometimes I think I'm in when I'm not. I hate missing.

If I'm too high to tell if I'm missing or not, then I'm high enough already... that's one of those good problems!

inject yourself at a low angle and have a steady hand so you dont slip out of a vein, DONT intentionally dull your syringes

I make it a point to use a brand new needle everytime I fix. I live in Georgia now and a Walgreens in Sandy Springs will sell me a box at a time. I hate Walgreens but for some reason this one is cool about selling me needles. I have to show ID and sign a form though. There is a pharmacy in Little 5 (OP says shes from Atlanta) that will sale you a bag of 10 for 3 dollars. Ive also ordered boxes off the interent and had them sent to my crib with no problem. I always have a stockpile of brand new needles.

Most of the IV users I know will use the same needle like 10 times or more. I dont understand this concept. This is how you fuck up your veins and leave serious track marks. It is also unsanitary to do this. Those fucking needles get dull after one use. Its a good practice to use it once and dispose, plus needles are really cheap so you dont have to spend all your dope money on them,

^^ I use to use needles a hell of a lot more than once. If I had a bag or two I would still use one needle for at least three hits. It would go in relatively easy and seemed easier to not miss.

Also I guesse its just a hording type deal. If I could get dope but didn't have any points? What a drag. I wouldn't even do the bag in any other way until I could get a point so I always kept oldies around.

yea im the same way. for me the needles are best after theyve been used a few times, cause my veins that i do have left are so small that the difference between not yet being in the vein and going through it is a matter of like a millimeter or two. ones that have been used a few times seem to go in and stay in no problem, but it quickly gets to a point where the needle is just too dull. but i horde old needles too.
