although this has apparently been around for several weeks, i just got ahold of it. no doubt many of you know this, but there is apparently quite a bill milling around in the House of Reps. it's sponsered by ron paul and barney frank. .wait, who was it that said PAUL HATED GAYS??? probably carl rove. anyway. . . . . . if this thing is passed, it'll do away with federal penalties for possession of up to 100 grams of pot.

here:
http://www.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/07/30/frank.marijuana/index.html (http://www.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/07/30/frank.marijuana/index.html)

it is HR 5843, the "Personal Use of Marijuana by Responsible Adults Act of 2008"

now, there are legit arguments for real o-philes not to give two shits about pot legalization, but if you wanna contact your legislator about this (or anything else), then go here:

https://forms.house.gov/wyr/welcome.shtml (https://forms.house.gov/wyr/welcome.shtml)

here's suggestions on how to write your own letter to congress:

http://usgovinfo.about.com/library/weekly/aa020199.htm (http://usgovinfo.about.com/library/weekly/aa020199.htm)

or, if you don't have time, here's a pre-written letter you can get from NORML:

http://usgovinfo.about.com/library/weekly/aa020199.htm (http://usgovinfo.about.com/library/weekly/aa020199.htm)

coddfish doesn't care for pot, but he loves 'im some liberty!!

Coddfish is right. If we just sit back and keep saying "Oh, my writing my Congressman won't help", then of course it won't. But at least we'll be able to say we tried.

At least 20 years to legalise anything, maybe a lot longer.Decriminalisation........who knows. It depends on many factors.

Always remember the drug war has nothing to do with evidence based policy or logic and everything to do with apathy, fear and ignorance.Oh and greed.

I'm not sure Obama would want to decriminalise weed, but at least he admits to getting high.

Would be a nice first step to get all states on board for medical use, it is still unfathumable (spelling) that it isn't widely used... it works better then any pharm for the same uses.

Quite right Nate and in fact, this is the strategy adopted by the DPA,Norml and all the other anti prohibition groups.
Hell,if you can't make the argument for giving the terminally ill weed............you're not gonna go far suggesting that c and h should be legal.

I never thought it would happen either... but come to California and see it in action. It's not perfect yet but if you get caught with an oz. in the bay area, there's no DA that would prosecute it. We can legally grow our own, and have dozens of medical pot clubs (getting a med. marijuana card is about as hard as getting a blockbuster card).

Sucks for me that I can't stand smoking herb anymore!

Pot goes FAR beyond just getting you high, that is what people need to realize, as a medicine the stuff can't be beat.

This is why I imagine pharm companies would like pot to stay very much illegal.

edit:

Sounds alot like my area, except you can get caught with pounds with little more then prohibation.

i agree. i don't think obama cares one way or another. . . .politically, which is all that matters to us. he could get it done if he wanted to. any president could if he/she would take solid, informed and pronounced stand on the issue. it would happen.

i believe most people want this done, it's just a matter of getting the ball rolling. obama is a la-mo. same as all the rest. so he won't do crap. like nick said, at least he admits getting high.

if he gets in (which i doubt) that'll be two TWO presidents who ADMIT to getting high. and it's illegal. what the f is wrong with people??? FUCK.

oh yeah, email/write your congressman. sorry you can't help, nick!!

The problem is that drug policy has nothing to do with the evidence. After many years of protest weed was reclassified in England to a class C drug, the lowest real classification.Time passes and it's a success .What happens next........a change in political climate and it's rereclassified to class B and you will be charged.

How's that for dumbness?

Same here! It's like what I dreamed of when I was a pothead in high school but those days are long gone for me.

Indeed we have de facto legalization and it has not affected anything except innocent smokers are no longer being pursued by the state and local government.

true dat. but if the cops wanna be a dick, they surely can and will fuck you for any amount of weed if you dont have 150 bux a year for a weed card. even having a few flakes COULD ( not if your honest and the cop is cool, usually just have to be honest) get you a ticket for "possession of not more than once ounce."
my friend got three of them this year within days of eachother, but he has a problem saying "yes officer, i have weed right here."

This is a great thread thanks cod fish. I've given Kev and his buddy each a pen and a tablet and they are sitting here writing there letters like good little pot heads. Neither of them use the net but they both smoke ALLOT of pot and this was the first thread I actually was able to get him to sit and read!!
thanks

^^Hey jonny-5 how're you doin'!

Yeh, I guess it's not like all the way there yet.

But these dispensaries are like too cool. I went to one on Sunset near Silverlake, they had everything you could think of, clones too and free *medicine* with first time purchase... They are expensive, I wonder if the prices will start to drop when competition really gets going.

I saw Super High Me on DVD it is worth checking out.

 gudammit, people are thick. people run for office to "do things to make the world better." i'm gonna run pretty soon, to "undo things." if everybody "does something," then we end up with this kinda absurdity.

When asked about the issue of marijuana, he replied simply, "I think this whole issue needs to be rethought"

Who knows?

Obama once said (something like this anyway) 'America is the greatest country in the world, vote for me and we'll make change happen!'

Sounds like a true predecessor to me... :(
