:( Hunter S. Thompson shot himself, not sure if it was accidental or suicide, but that really sucks. Dead at 67, proving like Burroughs you can abuse nearly every substance known to man and live to an old age. He is my favorite writer, along with Burroughs of course. If you've never read any of his books you should definitly pick up Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.

Definitely an amazing author and person. Big loss to the world, Fear and Loathing was required reading for one of my college classes.

i was driving around last night and caught the tail end of an announcement via drudge where someone was doing a play by play of the action in aspen. i thought it could be a joke. 67? man, i can only think that he was involved in some mescaline and maybe went off the deep end in mescaline thought?

"On Feb. 20, Dr. Hunter S. Thompson took his life with a gunshot to the head at his fortified compound in Woody Creek, Colo.," said Thompson's son, Juan in a statement released to the Aspen Daily News and reported by the Denver Post.
I guess it really was suicide.
"The Edge... there is no honest way to explain it because the only people who really know where it is are the ones who have gone over."

Well he was definitly an enigma and an all round likeable guy. Quite honestly though his suicide wasn't much of a suprise after having read his book "Kingdom of fear", which was a disappontment in of itself. Ive heard his most recent "Hey Rube" was good and now i'll probably check it out given the circumstances now. I like his sports articles alot more than I ever liked the few narratives Ive read of his, which is kinda funny since I am not particularly fond of sports or even give a shit. You might wanna check them out even if you don't give a shit about sports, I beleive ESPN.com has a special Hunter web page.

he was in a lot of pain. broke his hip and had it replaced in hawaii last year. just had back surgery. broke his leg. I'm sure he was on a lot of morphine but he was probably still depressed about getting old and weak. kingdom of fear was a great book in my opinion.

i've yet to check out kingdom of fear or ruby. the rum diaries and hell's angels were my favs. i had a trip from portland to work every day where i'd take the train (instead sit in a line of cars) and read for the hour. hst was at the top of my list... never pinned the guy for a suicider.....

I would think mescaline would be the last substance that a person would be driven to commit suicide on, amphetamine on the other hand is a prime candidate.............GONZO LIVES......................

Not to sound like an idiot, but I don't even know who Hunter is, but I seen the movie Fear and Loathing in L.V....two times...I got it the first time, a few weeks later I dropped a tab and watched it again then I really got it...Sorry, PK, to hear about this man, it seems like you are a real big fan of his work....That says a lot about a person, the imprint they leave in other peoples lives, after they have lived out theres...I am comparing him in my own mind to Thomas Leary, who I happen to take a liking to....but i will pick up a book of Hunters in your honor pk.......I'll get back to you on that....and just so you guys (all my opi-friends) know I do read books not just the Bazooka Gum Wrappers..(ever notice the Fortune thats written on the bottom of the comic??)...lol...I am a very big fan of Carlos CastaƱeda....anyone familiar??....PK, any suggestions on a book by Hunter?
Respectfully,
