The iPhone app store launched today, and one of the top apps is Epocrates… an application for doctors that helps them with correct dosages and such… or so they would have you believe…
The app is actually free… and the first screenshot just shows “Pill Pictures”.

The question is whether this app will get more downloads from actual physicians… or from spoiled rich kids preparing to raid their parents’ medicine cabinets…

You can get Epocrates on other media too, like Palm and Blackberry's. One of my favorite medical blogs ( http://gruntdoc.com/ ) was just talking about this the other day. The author is an ER Dr. in Ft. Worth, TX, and he talks about how he uses the app all the time.

Personally, even though I'm sure it has the potential of misuse (but no more so than anything with a 'net connection. Pill identification is fairly simple these days), I like the idea of ER Dr.'s using it. Even if it cuts down on ONE single mistake, it'd be worth it.

Not to mention how cool it would be for a patient. here you are, in the ER, sick and/or dying, and the Dr. tells you the names of a few meds he's going to put you on. Right then and there you can check to see what they are, what they do, and what they might interfere with. And you can communicate any problems with the Dr. while you're still there, instead of when you get to the Pharmacy and you're trying to sort out what's what.
