View Full Version : Stigma comparing Opana to Oxy?

I know that Oxy carries a lot of bad juju with it since the media has gotten a hold of it. But, what about Opana? Does that carry the stigmata with it like Oxy does? Since my doc is getting a bid scared with still prescribing me oxy, should I maybe ask for Opana instead? I don't think my doc knows much about Opana or oxymorphone hcl, so I don't know if I should have any problem getting it, but I don't know if I want to take that step. What do you guys think?

not the same stigma these days.. I don't think it will at least until the generic is fully released and it drives the prices down... it's way to expensive to become a common drug, most insurance companies don't like to cover it unless you jump through the hoops..

My insurance will cover the IR version, but not the ER. I'm looking for something to replace my 30mg Oxycodone HCL that my doc isn't so worried about. I will be trying this tomorrow morning at my doc's office. Hopefully it will work. I will try to get a script for my Fent, Oxy, and Opana this month.

Ok, you are worried about your doctor cutting you off because he is spooked about writing for you but you are going to go in and ask for your regualr scripts plus another drug that is pretty uncommon, especially to a PCP. http://i110.photobucket.com/albums/n113/vivigump/Emoticons/yim_rolling_eyes.gif http://i110.photobucket.com/albums/n113/vivigump/Emoticons/surrender.gif http://i110.photobucket.com/albums/n113/vivigump/Emoticons/emot-bang.gif http://i110.photobucket.com/albums/n113/vivigump/Emoticons/nuts.gif

Hey Krinkov, I believe the word is stigma... stigma. Stigmata is when someone exhibits wounds on their hands and feet where Jesus was nailed to the cross. That's quite a different word.
I don't mean to be a vocabulary Nazi... I just had to say something.

Although both oxy and opana can be a religious experience, I've never heard of this kind of physical manifestation resulting from their use.

I have had blood ooze from my hand while shooting Opana, if that's not stigmata, I don't know what is.

I'm wondering about the Opana also. I'd like to learn about the time release mechanism and find out how to get around it.
You don't have to mention anything at all about price. I was on 250mg Methadone/day and the switchover rate to Opana was SKY HIGH. The price for the amount I would have required was something like $3,300 !!! (LOL--"corporate" America.)
My doc said no way was he gonna rape the state like that (I'm currently on Medicaid). Soooooo, as of this writing I am starting out the morning with a prescribed dose of 2 x's 200mg MS Contin (generic of course) PLUS 40mg. rescue doses of IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONCENTRATED ORAL SOLUTION morphine up to 6x's /day, and 2 more 200mg MS's at night.
Thats 1040mg. morphine/day, which untill 2 weeks ago, I have only taken about 4 times in my entine LIFE!!!! (Of course, I was a heroin IV'er for about 6 months back in '98.)
Problem being......the morphine just don't get me HIGH!!! I've been off MDONE for about 3 weeks now, so I know that is not the problem. Any answers, anyone? (and sorry :o 'bout switchin' topics....I'm brand new here!)

I was on Oxy for several years and go switched over to Opana almost a year ago. I had changed Dr.s and this one was all up in arms about the Oxy BS. Well, he prescribed me Opana and boy, it is much better than Oxy! I'd say definitely switch to Opana. All of us have different body make up and all that, but IMO, Opana is best ;I am taking 120mg/day. I don't know if you like the speedy effect Oxy gives some, but Opana is the opposite, more sedating , great nod. Others have said the get no effect. What I have noticed when railed, you don't get the instant effect but rather creeps up on you, sometimes it takes about 1 hour, but the buzz lingers longer. BTW, I take both ER and IR, and though the IR I am given is only 5mg/4 day, I can attest that it is better than when I was getting Oxy IR.
Peace

im a cp patient and on oxy at the moment. is opana really that much better. i know everyone has there on opionions about what is the best. I never even hear of opana being sold on the street. can it be snorted or injected as well?

Yeah we all knew what you meant, it's just a funny choice of words, cause stigmata is something TOTALLY different and it makes me laugh just imagining it. Don't worry we don't think you're stupid cause of it or anything

So, here is the story on what happened. He has been saying for the last couple of visits that he wants me off opiates all together, but he knows he can't just cut me off cold turkey. So, I mentioned the Opana as an alternative to the Roxi. As I assumed, he had never heard of it. So, he went and looked it up. He comes back and tells me that it's still an opiate and that he wants me off of them. So, what does he do? He writes me a script for Opana 5mg twice a day. He says that it is a 15 day script and that he wants to see me next week. I asked if I could get refills on my fent and oxy. He says NOOOOOOOO! (not quite that dramatic, but it felt like it to me.) So for me to taper down, I go from 100mcg/h patches every other day and 4-30mg oxy a day to 2-5mg Opana a day and that's it.:confused::confused: My doc is a total loon at times. I really think I need a new one. Maybe one that wasn't alive when you could buy heroin from the Sears catalog?
ETA: For some reason, I can't edit my first post. So, if a mod would be kind enough to change "Stigmata" to "stigma" in the thread title and body, I would be rather great full. THX!!!

I thought you wanted to get switched from oxy to opana? but you're saying you want to get scripts for fent, oxy, and opana this month? Good luck with that, I think you'll have better luck if you tell your doc you want to stop oxy and go for opana instead, if that's what you want.
For what it's worth, I played around with a few opana er 20mg and ir 5mgs and in terms of a high, there wasn't much at all. I crushed the er and swallowed it, and snorted the ir. Neither one produced much euphoria. I didn't have a lot to play with though, maybe it was a dosage problem. For pain relief, they were quite good.
So I'd say it depends what your primary goal is, whether or not it will be worth the switch.

From past experience, I'd say you're right. It's definitely time to find a new dr. Mine was saying the exact same thing, and it took me a while, but I finally caught on that he was serious and my meds were gonna be gone soon. (I'm a CP patient, so it was out of the question.)
Start looking NOW and have a game plan so you don't get screwed.

Thats brutal man....was great when he wanted to prescribe opaites, but definetly not good when he "changes his mind" and leaves you hanging with a dose that is not equivalent, not even by a longshot.
Stay strong man.

What are the prices like for opana? say if you dont have insurance what the "best bang for the buck"? I'm just on 30mgs. of oxy right now and I'm way undermedicated.

Okay so you are saying that your doctor took your 100mcg Fentanyl Patches and 120mg/day of Oxycodone scripts totally off you just like that. No tapering or anything; well with the exception of the 60 5mg Opana IRs. Aren't you like sick as hell right now? There is no way that those Opana are near the equivalent of what you were taking. What is this guy thinking? What is his reason for wanting you off all opiates? I can't imagine what would make this doctor just out and out cut you off unless there was something that led him to believe you were abusing or selling your meds. Does he realize how sick your could get? I would be calling his office and telling him that you are sick for withdrawal and demand that he taper you properly. That's FUCKED!! http://i110.photobucket.com/albums/n113/vivigump/Emoticons/bat.gifhttp://i110.photobucket.com/albums/n113/vivigump/Emoticons/asshole.gif
Clearly this doctor has no idea how to prescribe these medications...frankly I would be concerned if he were looking after other aspects of your health.

Well, I've been out for a while now. He just doesn't know that. He thinks that I still have some. I have since found out that my insurance wont cover any form of Opana, PERIOD!! I don't understand since it's not overly expensive for the non-ER. So, tomorrow I will go into his office and plead with him to taper me properly . I guess I will draw up a schedule that tapers me using the method that OxyContinuously posted in the stickied thread and hope that he will at least do that.
As for why he wants me off, I really don't know. I would call every month for my refills and go pick them up the next day. There were no problems, nothing. Then, all of a sudden, he said that he wanted to see me before my next refills. That's when he hit me with it. I don't know if maybe one of the other doctors in the building told him that opiates were evil and that no one should even look at them, or what. I was really blind sided by it. I have another doctor lined up that I've heard is kinda a quack and may give me what I want, but he charges $100 a visit if you get refills for a script and I don't quite have the money right now. Maybe this is just a sign saying that I need to quit.

That's why I'm looking for a new doctor. This doctor is over 70 years old and is in pre-retirement. His office hours are goofy and very inconvenient for me. I think I will find a new one soon. :o

Well, I think I found my quack!!! There has been a doctor that I have been considering after a friend recommended him to me. I wasn't sure if I wanted to switch to him or not. My friend said that he was a croaker, but I wasn't sure if he was a fluke or not. So, when I went to my pharmacist today to get my refill, I informed him that this would probably be my last refill since my doc was cutting me off. The very first thing that he said to me was "You might want to try doctor xxxx. He's a PCP that deals with a lot of pain patients." So, I think I got the tip that I needed. I just switched my insurance and I will be seeing him on Tuesday. :D Best of luck to me!!!

You don't even know the half of it. He fills my scripts early and bills the insurance later. He does partial fills for me until the rest comes in, and he will even substitute different dosages. (Like if he only has 15mg oxy pills, he will give me 2 for one instead. ) I'm beginning to wonder if he uses himself. Either way, the guy rocks!!! I take care of him any chance I get too. I'll buy them pizza and whatnot.
