In the December Dope Movie thread you guys got all the movies pretty much but the all time best movie on the topic of drugs and the role they play in our world today...TRAFFIC.

And "Maria Full of Grace" is a spanish movie but a very gripping and informative movie based on the trade of Heroin from the perspective of the carrier.

Maria in this case.

Drugstore Cowboy- Has a great scene and quote with William Burroughs at the end.

Altered States- For those interested in hallucinogens and flotation tanks, a classic. Many mistakes but referred to so much it's worth viewing.

Maria full of Grace was sad.

But on the topic of other dope movies, the first time I saw Requiem for a Dream, it was on HBO at like 2 in the morning, and I went to sleep right after it ended. I had some of the most fucked up dreams that night. Also becuase the end reminds me of my boyfriend, 'cos he's missing his left hand (not from drugs, from birth).

This documentary about William S. Burroughs! I posted it a while back, on a fast server, in h.264 (iPod format), but which should play in any recent-version media player like VLC, Windows Media Player, QuickTime, etc:

http://s18.quicksharing.com/v/4360472/Burroughs_h264_aac.m4v.html

I'm starting a new thread about it now because I'm astounded that more people here haven't downloaded it, added more hosting mirrors to make sure there's plenty of copies in circulation and TONS of spare bandwidth, and gotten everyone else they know to download it too!

BURROUGHS OWNS!!!

What about Panic in Needle Park then? One of Al Pacino's earliest films. It's a bit dated in some ways but the junkies in it were real junkies unlike the fakers (fuckers) in Trainspotting.

I tried downloading that awhile back in that other thread you were talking about it in. Halfway through the download it got all fucked up. Tried again same result.
I dont think its my computer cause I download stuff via bittorrent all the time. Hopefully this link you have here will work.
I think it has to do with the fact that its an M4v file. My computer doesn't seem to like that type o' file very much.
There is a good chance Im completly retarded too. either way if you have any advice that would be great.

And let's not forget the Sinatra classic, The Man with the Golden Arm.

For books, a few years ago I read The Corner, which followed a bunch of aging dope fiends and their families around godforsaken inner city Baltimore. Exceedingly grim, yet very compelling reading. Loved Fat Curt.

Fix! is a documentary about a drug user group in Vancouver and their political struggles to get a safer injection site for the street users of their neighbourhood.
http://www.canadawildproductions.com/fix/index.html

About a year after the film finishes, North America's first safer injection site opened.
http://www.vch.ca/sis/

Unfortunately now that there is a new Conservative government elected into power in Canada, the ongoing operation of the safer injection site is in jeopardy. It needs a federal exemption from current narcotic laws in order that users can bring their street drugs to the site for preparation and injection and it looks like the Conservatives may not renew that exemption.

You can find some really good info on the safer injection site among the "The Science" links at this site:

Basketball Diaries with Leonardo de Caprio. Bad movie but it did have Jim Carrol who wrote the book and had a great scene about loving the ritual of doing up. De Niro, I believe, in Coming of Age in America, an opium den scene. That Sherlock Holmes variant about cocaine. Lenny Bruce about the world's funniest junkie, Naked Lunch, of course.

Spun is an excellent one, shows how methamphetamine life is to a t.

WOW! I couldn't disagree more. I spent a relatively short period of time with a group of tweakers(three solid months) but in that time I didn't see anything remotely close to stupidity on that level. I'm sure things like, what's displayed in Spun, do happen on occasion but it shouldn't be taken as a generalization of all methamphetimine users. Which is precisely why I hate that damn movie. Give's people the wrong impression.
I guess that's how some movies make their money though... By going to the extreme for that extra bit of shock value.
Not how methamphetamine life is at all...In short.

Well, I lived the methamphetamine lifestyle from casual user to home manufacturer for almost 14 years. Let me correct myself, SPUN shows how methamphetamine cooks live. At least some of them. I have lived in motels, cooking dope in the bathroom, with the windows, doors, and vents taped up with heavy plastic and duct tape. I've caught myself on fire a few times, too.
