Disable certain posters avatars?

I really don't know what to do about this, but ndoftaworld's avatar is a picture of a guy with a rotting face. This really, really bothers me. and makes me not read his posts. Is there anyway for me to be able to turn it off, so that I won't see it. I don't want to turn off all avators, just his.

There's a difference between not liking an avatar, and being really, really bothered by it. On another site someone had an flashing avatar of a clown. Loads of people were bothered by it because flashing avatars can give eye strain and headaches.

Now everyone has different taste, fair enough, but if someone deliberately chooses to have an offensive avatar, other people should have the option of turning it off. And just turning all avatars off isn't fair, because it's like the offensive person is saying, "If you don't want to look at my avator, then I won't let you look at any of them."

Great, thanks roxi, ndoftaworld is now on my ignore list. It's a shame because I did like reading his posts, but his avatar was just too disturbing. What would be really great was if the ignore list had the option to ignore just the avatar. That would be my number 1 feature request for the site.

Really, the avatars are pretty small. I just go by shape recognition in a way to tell whos it is. I saw ND's new avatar and never paid it much thought. Then I looked at it closely and still don't pay much thought.

In a site full of threads about things going in/out of peoples asses, horror stories, needles, abscesses, cat plugging, etc etc........

Open the "list of blockable items" (for me it's a stop sign in the upper right corner of the Firefox window) and find the URL of the image. Double-click on it, then hit OK to add it to the list of blocked items. Just tried it and it worked for me.

The ones admitting to felonies and being PROUD of such idiocy. The adblock plus tip was pretty cool, and changing the avatar was a LOT farther than I would've gone nd, so props on that. Just an aside though, if you use the stylish extension with FF, there's code available that does the exact same thing as ABP, but with a much smaller footprint, which is nice when firefox already eats so much RAM. Admittedly, it has gotten better, but release 3 still gets up to 250 MB or better. Beats the hell out of using a gig though.

I agree. I think way too big of a deal is made about this. What if someone was offended by your avatar Woody Bear that says "Drugs Are For Bums?" Would you change it? I am offended and I'm sure other people are as well because not all people that take drugs are bums.

Also, I personally find wooden animals to be very creepy. I can't stand it anymore. As much as I like your posts, I am just gonna have to skip reading them until you change your avatar...

I agree, man. As much as I love FF, it isn't worth a damn on a box with a modest amount of ram. I fist noticed this when I was running Win 2000 via Vmware on a linux box of mine. The machine has a gig of memory, but I only had like 384mg allocated for the virtual machine. Firefox would bog that virtual machine down so bad that I couldn't hardly run it. I hate to say it, but IE was better on the virtual machine. Then, add some extensions to it, which is by far one of the best features of FF, and its hopeless.

Thanks for mentioning the stylish extension. I've never seen that one but I just loaded it. I run quite a few extensions. My favorites are: speed dial, ScapBook (allows you to capture pages and save them on your hardrive), Tab Mix Plus (unfortunately, it hasn't been updated to work with the new FF 3 release), Read it Later, Hyperwords, Flashblock, and googlepedia. The extensions sure make one's browsing time more productive and pleasant, but I am with you, I wish they'd fix the memory leaks and shit in it. When it first came out, that wasn't a problem. In fact, its claim to fame was that its footprint was much smaller. Those days are well behind us now.

And I know I've brought this up in 2 threads, but because private messaging has been disabled, I couldn't contact ndoftaworld in private about this.

I know people say that's it's not difficult to ignore it, but it's a question of field of view. Even when looking at the opposite corner of my moniter, I could still see it, and it still bothered me. I'm just really glad that ndoftaworld was so good about changing it.

Now everyone is bothered by different things, there was on thread I read about on a different forum of pictures of a guy with his head blown off. I had nightmares about that shit for 3 days. And I refuse to watch 2 girls 1 cup. I don't know how some people like seeing stuff like that. But gory pictures and horror movies really bother me.

During this whole thing I had the image in my mind of a teenager going around wearing a shirt saying, "I hate you. You're a c***", then shouting, "What? What's you're fucking problem?", at people who give her funny looks. And that's what site's like rotten.com and films like Saw remind me off.

But I'm really pleased that this all got resolved well, and I'll use that Adblock Plus tip in some more in the future, I only got two opioiphile avatars in there at the moment, the one of the hacked off legs, and WarmCyanide's.

BTW, here in England, bum means bottom or arse, it's what American's call "fannys", although "fanny" in England means "vagina". We also don't call homeless people "bums", we call them "Big Issue sellers" or "homeless".

Actually you are right about that WB. I completely agree with you. I do think that people that post gruesome images, or sexual images, or ___________(<---Insert Whatever) are looking for attention. We all are. Even me. People have commented about my pit bull quite a bit and I enjoy it. Probably the same way that you thought your avatar would be funny and people would like it. I wasn't actually offended by your avatar, I was just trying to make a point. It's kinda about freedom of speech, freedom of expression. In order to have these things you are going to have to see or hear things you don't like, but it's just how it works. Personally I'd rather look at other avatars that I don't like and be able to express myself however I want than to have (as WC suggested) all avatars be identical and uniform. Sure if they were all identical no one would be offended, but is it really worth it?

Initially when the topic of cat plugging came up, and especially when upstate said that it will increase because duckfeet is back, I assumed that he meant sticking the hose from a bicycle pump up the cat's ass and pumping it full of air.

It was from a thread a long time ago when we were talking about the urban legend of kids getting high by pumping air up their asses. It might have been when we were laughing about that Jenkem story. So we all joked about it for a while. Then I noticed that on Duckfeet's profile page, there is a hilarious picture of a cat being pumped full of air. That's what I assumed was meant by cat plugging...I may be wrong, but I'm pretty sure that's what he was talking about.

I know in the past when I had left weed that was already broken down with no seeds or stems on a plate or on a table, my cat would usually jump on the table and start smelling it. On one occasion, she actually laid down and started to roll around in it which made a HUGE mess...but it was funny! :D

I have heard that too, but I don't think it's true. It doesn't really make any sense. Why would blowing smoke in a dog's ear get him high? If blowing smoke in a dog's ear could get it high, we would be able to blow smoke in our own ears to get toasted as well. If anything, I bet that dogs get more of a contact high just from being around the second-hand smoke. Even when you blow smoke right in the dogs ear, it ends up being right around it's face so it probably inhales it anyway.

Agreed. I really don't like the idea of intentionally trying to get animals stoned. I got into a big argument with my little brother one time because he was trying to get my dogs high. The dogs were resisting and didn't want smoke blown in their face or in their ears and my brother was trying to force them. It's not like with a human where they can understand "Oh Okay...Now I'm high." They just know that they feel weird and different and they don't understand why. With their intelligence level, it would almost be like getting a toddler high. They'll do it and obey you, but they can't actually understand what's going on. They also can't agree or refuse either. I've seen dogs get high and appear to be very anxious; almost as if they are a bit scared because they don't understand what's going on. It's really hard to say because obviously we don't know what animals are thinking.

But hey, since we are sharing stoned cat stories, a friend of mine's brother had this cat, his name was Phil. He was an old stray that they found, to this day, anyone who's smoked with him swears he's talked, told us about how he has been from Compton to Philly and somehow made his way to New Mexico...but of course, no one believes us.

Anyways, when we'd smoke there, we'd gather around the dinner table (set up like a bench) and Phil would come running and jump up on top of the table, he'd circle the table, looked like he was checking everyone out individually, and then sit down right in front of who ever he wanted to smoke him out. You'd take a hit and he would get right up in your face and sit as you blew a cloud at him, then he'd get off the table when he was done...It was quite funny, he picked who he got high with, not the other way around...

Yup: every once in a while it seems like we start taking ourselves to damn seriously around here. Hence, "cat pumping", which developed from a previous hilarious thread, where a bunch of us fessed up to plugging opiates, and one of the girls started talking about her technique for doing it, which involved something to do w/hiking up a leg like she was getting a manicure, hence the "princess manicure" plugging technique, and of course since my neighborhood is inundated w/ aristocratic cats who look like they could use a little humility, and I've got a couple of wasted bicycle pumps...voila!

And of course, some of the cat lovers got outraged which just added fuel to the fire, so to speak...and right around that time some russian kid got caught (maybe!) stowing away on some jumbo jet...we've been sadly prone to exageration at times around here...thank god, since the drug quality has gotten weak as shit...././. ;-)


Initially when the topic of cat plugging came up, and especially when upstate said that it will increase because duckfeet is back, I assumed that he meant sticking the hose from a bicycle pump up the cat's
ass and pumping it full of air.

Oh yeah dude I knew you were being sarcastic. I actually didn't word that very well. I was trying to make a point that it's better to have a couple avatars that you don't like and have the freedom to choose whatever avatar you want than to have identical, uniform avatars for everyone to avoid offending anyone. I was just giving you credit because you already made your point by saying that earlier.

You are right though: It is hard to convey or detect sarcasm in text.

And to go completely off-topic again: I think that your decapitated yellow smiley face avatar was by far the most disturbing, creepy avatar of all-time. Something about you having that avatar up was incredibly disconcerting for some reason...:D

I really don't know what to do about this, but ndoftaworld's avatar is a picture of a guy with a rotting face. This really, really bothers me. and makes me not read his posts. Is there anyway for me to be able to turn it off, so that I won't see it. I don't want to turn off all avators, just his.

There's a difference between not liking an avatar, and being really, really bothered by it. On another site someone had an flashing avatar of a clown. Loads of people were bothered by it because flashing avatars can give eye strain and headaches.

Now everyone has different taste, fair enough, but if someone deliberately chooses to have an offensive avatar, other people should have the option of turning it off. And just turning all avatars off isn't fair, because it's like the offensive person is saying, "If you don't want to look at my avator, then I won't let you look at any of them."

Great, thanks roxi, ndoftaworld is now on my ignore list. It's a shame because I did like reading his posts, but his avatar was just too disturbing. What would be really great was if the ignore list had the option to ignore just the avatar. That would be my number 1 feature request for the site.

I think this thread has been pretty good, someone showed me how to use the Firefox plug-in (he he he) Adblock Plus to block them, and that's a great tip, I've been using it at other sites as well.

I have got things sorted out with Nodoftaworld, and things are good between us. But now that I know how to block avatars, he could change it back if he wants to, I'm not bothered by them anymore, because I don't have to view pictures like that anymore.

But I do feel that some people miss the point, when they say, "Just suck it up", or "I don't see what he's complaining about". Because although some people thing that this is about someone "trying to stamp out freedom of expression", this isn't about that at all.

The freedom of expression side come from wanting to be able to be able to choose to any avatar picture. And I think that's a good thing, and I do think that people should be able to do this. But these images cross the bounds of social acceptance, so imagine for example, going up to a complete stranger and saying "I don't like your hair, I don't like your clothes, I don't like your piercings". Now that would be incredibly rude, and offensive to the other person , and by saying that, you have crossed the social boundaries by verbally affronting someone purely for their personal appearance.

But it's different if someone goes around with a t-shirt depicting scenes of graphic horror or sex, scenes that would give kids nightmares, and are only suitable to be shown in horror or porno films, where adults have the choice to watch them or not. To show these pictures, you have crossed the social boundaries, because you have not given people a choice beforehand to view it or not. That's why I said it is classed as a visual assault.

And if you have the freedom to show these pictures, then it's hypocritical to say that other people don't have the right to say, “I'm offended”, or to be offended when a security guard says, “You can't come into the mall wearing that shirt, because there are young kids about.” So while I fully support freedom of expression, people with extreme views need to accept that if they express these views outside in a public place, other people equally have the right to say that they are offended.

So extreme pictures simply should not be shown in a public space. But Opiophile isn't a public space, it's for adults, and that's why although I support the option of showing extreme avatars, I have the right to be able to: A.) Complain about them, and B.) Be able to turn them off.

Nodoftaworld, has been really good about this, by changing his avatar, when he didn't have to. He gets respect from me for doing that. So I'm not pissed off with him at all, but I've really been enjoying this discussion, and I felt I had to respond to this.

I got in pretty damn late with this thread... but one thing I have to say is that I think woodybear approached the whole subject with alot of class and tact.. he didn't go ragging or flaming anyone, or even demanding a change in any avatars.. he just politely asked how he could ignore the avatar, and considering some of the asshole noobies we've been getting around here (ie robbed dealer tool) It's just nice to welcome someone here who stands up for themselves and respects others rights.
