Shantaram is the 2003 roman à clef novel written by Gregory David Roberts, a convicted Australian bank robber and heroin addict who escaped from Pentridge Prison and fled to India where he lived for 10 years.

That's the short answer/summary. Mostly it's a pretty good book I stumbled onto and even though I am only about a quarter of my way through it, it has been better than most. And I think it is worthy of interest.

It may still end stupid or something, but it's holding up so far.
