If this one sounds familiar its because I think it occurs naturally in turkey... yeah that's the one.
Anyway years ago it was administered for depression, but at some point people started getting sick. Later the sickness was traced back to the distributor of one brand but not before I think it was banned by the FDA.
I should add that I think the same week it was banned Prozac came out... coincidence? You decide.
Anyway, l-tryptophan allegedly produces seratonin (?) ... whereas anti depressants only enhance what already in the brain.
Seratonin also eases pain and helps with anxiety.
Sooo... anyone ever had experience with this? The supplement, not turkey!

Yah I have tried it in the past. Someone I know has a bottle of it. I tried it once and found it made me very sleepy and gave me some pretty strange feelings. I felt very dazed and just weird. I felt pretty paranoid and wondered if I would feel normal again ever. After a day or two I felt "normal" again. It was pretty crappy and uneventful. I found it to be the same as 5-Htp. I tried both of them and they made me feel pretty much the same.

Oh my I love spreading reputation points. I love clicking the little scale and then spreading my points to people. It makes me feel like the reputatin fairy!!! Yee haw. haha. I love it. I give out rep all the time and no one ever seems to give it to me. lol. It's like they dont even notice :( Oh well I guess i'm not popular here haha. Ciao
Hey thanks for the points... I don't have power to give them yet... know how I get that going? I know there's info somewhere but i'm too lazy to read it.
As for the tryptophan, I was wondering if it would help in a natural regimen for depression / anxiety... of course any euphoria would be nice, but not necessary... I see it probably won't happen anyway.
But I mainly need a non-benzo anxiety med and something to help me get some frikkin' sleep (as I glance over to the clock fuck its getting late again!)

I don't really know if it would help or harm. I take Prozac everyday. It's pretty useless, although it does make me feel like everything is all good most of the time. It doesn't make me high, but I do get a small sense of well being which isn't noticeable after I dose but it's just a constant thing. I find that when I am not on Prozac I become very irritable and agressive and extremely negative. I know this stuff probably has some bad long-term effects but it's gotten me through the last 4 years of illness and even more years of my dysfunctional psycho father and his shananagins. Maybe you should just go to the doctor and get something decent? Or is that not an option? Maybe try exercising more during the day to help you get to bed at night? Or try Melatonin? 5-htp, St. John's Wort (although i've heard bad stuff about it). Maybe you should try Kava Kava? Also there is some thing my friend takes. It's some herbal product. You should go to Erowid and look at all the natural stuff and see if anything on their looks appealing and try it out. Kava helps calm the nerves. I've tried it before and it calmed the nerves for me. It didn't make me high or anything but it made me relax. www.erowid.org (http://www.erowid.org)

Nah.. pdoc's an option... thinking hard about it. I do exercise and I have some sleep aids, but i'm just an insomniac pure and simple. Anyway I'm looking for a more natural way of working with depression and anxiety, because I hate side effects of psycho pharms...
Yeah, I'll probably end up on one again anyway... wellbutrin was ok not too many bad side effects.
Mainly I want to avoid xanax or klonipins etc. . .

Yah you don't want to have a Benzo addiction. I will never go on Benzo's because the addiction would destroy me. I already have one too many addictions, I don't need another. You should look up natural remedies for sleep disorders. I may try some because I suffer from insomnia too. I have some health problems that make it hard for me to sleep. I wake up every 20 minutes for some reason. I may have apnea but I haven't been able to go into the sleep clinic yet. Anyways, my friend takes Valerian Root and apparently it really works but has funky effects. I would be careful with whatever you take, research it all thouroughly and pick a good trustworthy brand if you are buying natural stuff. I have tried Wellbutrin once, it's pretty good. I may try it again, I suffer from a chronic fatigue/fibromyalgia type thing and various other problems, chronic fevers, and things like that. I feel like i'm in a dream world all the time. I never get any rest, and when I do sleep I wake up feeling like I haven't slept. I've tried Adderall and Dexedrine (amphetamines) a few times and got prescriptions for them but it just doesn't wake me up. It just seems to mask the tiredness and I still feel exhausted and horrible, it actually makes me feel worse. I would like to try Provigil and Wellbutrin again. I'm also interested in Selegiline. It's a pretty interesting drug, you should read about it. Some of these "smart drugs" sound pretty cool. I suffer from cognitive problems, i get confused very easily and have trouble concentrating like a normal person. I just have alot of difficulty figuring things out. I was perfectly healthy until I was 17 and then shit went down hill. I'm going to see a naturopathic doctor. (i think thats what they are called?) It's covered by my insurance and it can't hurt. There might be something that can help me. Anyways, i'm out for now! Talk to you later. you'll be able to send points to people once you post more i think.
You should look at eastern medicine. Lookup some Chinese herbal treatments for ailments and conditions such as insomnia. There has to be something to this stuff. I think there must be some herbs that are beneficial to us and that have the power to heal. I know that poppies and marijuana are both medical grade plants. They have the power to make us feel better, so some of these other things must be able to help heal us or improve our lives in some way. I'm fed up with western medicine and am really giving this 3rd world, natural medicine, some thought. They have been doing it for thousands of years, not decades like western doctors.

Sounds like the same thing that happened to kava in Europe one supplier used the stems (not supposed to) and people got liver damage now its banned for human consumption.
L-Tryptophan is the direct precursor to serotonin infact you cant take serotonin like you do L-Tryptophan because your enzymes will destroy it. You can always buy it overseas or buy the raw powder not for human consumption.
For anxiety I recommend kava it works on gabba A receptors look into it or you could try dan-shan benzo recoptors or valerian root generally increases gabba.
Good luck

I don't sleep either. My meth doctor once sait to try that 5-htp (he said that was some kind of tryptophan), so I did. Sleep? Yeah, a little. But woke up feeling terrible, and stayed that way for hours. NOw I have this pricey bottle of shit in my cabinet. Guess I should throw it out. Tried valerian once, that seemed to help a little. It seems to me that we opiophiles are hypersensitive to medications and herbals, especially when detoxing or WD'ing. Sucks, no?

some anti deppressants, 5htp, and tryptophan may potentiate some opiates.
taking too much tryptophan or 5htp can make you feel sick.

l-tryptophan was banned in the US by the FDA because of a Japanese company that was selling contaminated l-tryptophan that killed a few people back in the late 80s. however, 5-htp is available and is more efficient than l-tryptophan for creating serotonin and melatonin.

consider 5-htp ten times more potent than tryptophan.
tryptophan can be purchased for animals very easily.

5-HTP works much better and is readily available all over the place. I usually get mine from Doctor's Trust, whcih has a web site.
