Any other fans on here?

Picked up my dual-disc copy of WITH_TEETH today after not having listened to it for a while, and there's a NIN concert in my area in the next couple of weeks, since I'm a "Spiral" member I get to bring a guest and enter the arena about an hour early for a short special performance exclusively for fan club members....

Been thinking a lot about Trent's music, his tremendous talent, all the years and times of my life when he's released new albums at long last.....usually predicting major changes in my life, in fact. I'm really looking forward to his next album which is supposed to be out in a "timely fashion" after this tour is over.....

For anyone who has only heard a couple of his "hits" like Closer (with the famous line "I want to Fuck You like an Animal"), you have GOT to pick up his albums! You can get them on the iTunes Music Store, or just about anywhere that sells music; he's a much more talented musician, in the classical sense, than most people seem to realize. I'd compare him to the Beethoven or Tchaikovsky of Industrial rather than your more traditional "metal" musician....

For those who don't have all his works, don't miss a single track; some are less "fun" than others, but all are amazing works of talent -- I say that not just as a fan, but as somebody who has covered a lot of his songs as a musician myself. Not only are they tremendously innovative, they are INCREDIBLY fun to play!

Trent Reznor (NIN) is a very original and innovative musician. NIN, especially downward spiral and pretty hate machine, are on of my favorite bands. But I do have to disagree with you on comparing him to Ludwig Van Beethoven. I am a classical piano buff and nothing I have ever heard comes even close to a good Piano sonata by beethoven or chopin. I have a portrait of beethoven on my right leg. It was my very first tattoo, I got it right after I quit junk for the 1st time. Of course this is just my opinion, but nothing can be compared to the classical artists. Its like classical piano is just a big ol black chunk of pure untainted music, and everything else is just diluted. Oh man, talk about opening up a can o worms.

Trent is probably my all-time favorite, if you consider his opus as a whole; no one else really rewards long-term listening that way. I'd call him the industrial Vivaldi, though--accessible on first listening, but with the incredibly complex brain-candy of the Baroque era beneath. He was heavily involved with heroin some years ago, I hear, but isn't now. My tickets for the canceled Tucson show last September are still pinned to my wall to remind me that some things are too good to be true.

Yeah, I heard the same thing. I think some woman broke his heart and he started hitting the needle, hard.....but came back from it and has been living a fairly clean life since.

Hopefully I'll be able to go to the concert....this new "spiral" fanclub access pre-show sounds really cool and although I've had the unique pleasure of meeting Trent in person and exchanging emails with him a few times several years ago, it would still be cool to be one of only a couple dozen people to be able to sit up front an hour before the main show and shout out requests, shoot the shit with the band, shake some hands.....

Have you gotten Trent's recent albums -- The Fragile and With Teeth? They are amazingly good. And very different from his earlier works. He is rapidly evolving into a broader-focused, even more "fun" style. I can't help but dance around and practice my "hanging off the microphone while rocking back and forth" stage movement from my band days when I listen to them. Great shit!

Fragile is at least as good. It's kind of a halfway point between the "Perfect Drug" era and W_T.

i have mixed feelings re: with teeth. i think it's pretty good, but i really am most moved by the angst and fury of earlier work (broken being my favorite).

i might go see them now that trent has finally decided to come back to nc. i've seen them twice, in '95 with david bowie, and in 2000 (i think, it was on tour with a perfect circle and APC was touring to support their first album). i loved em in 95, but in 2000, they were even better.

the new england shows were cancelled because trent was sick.....i have to wait until June to see NIN live, but hopefully trent will give us 110% to make up for the delay....

I gotta agree with defensy there; the rage coming from his earlier work just seemed less forced. Actually it didnt seem forced at all unlike teeth in my opinion. This is why I liked The Fragile much more.... it was far more inventive.

And as far as comparing modern rock to classical, which is something I dont think should ever be done, I think Tool as far as Musicianship would trump any other modern rock band out there today. Of course theres others up there with Tool but Tool happens to be the most popular and to be fair their in my top five favorite bands along with Wilco, The Beatles, Soul Coughing and Tom Waits.

FOR THOSE ABOUT TO ROCK!!!...

you might be surprised by his next album. as somebody who has always enjoyed "symphonic industrial" and very much enjoyed playing it as a musician, I think that trent has always been innovative and displayed extreme creativity with each new piece of work. in particular, his more recent albums need to be listened to for longer and more closely to really peel back all the different layers in each track.....

just MHO :-)

You know to be fair to Teeth I didnt give it to many listens and if I dont like something right off the bat it normally ends up being some of my favorite music. So Ill go back to it and try again on your advice. I was going through Mono and a Hep C scare and was having to quit my band because of these things at the time that I bought Teeth so It wasnt a good time in my life

NIN used to be one of my favorite. If you like that, check out the original band Trent was in: "Pigface." Makers of the song, "Suck." (How does it feel!!! :) ) They are not as good as NIN IMO but still very hardcore in there own way. Gotta love ministry as well. NIN is way more psychedelic, though.

that's one of the things I most enjoy about NIN. the depth, the fact that sometimes you have to take your time with it to really enjoy it properly....and that psychedelic layer that you can't quite properly appreciate until you've listened to NIN on high doses of LSD or a similar experience :-)

I've never been a fan of the ol NIN. I find Reznor a little pretentious. if you like rocking out with your cock out (or even in)... check out Mastodon. My good buddy is the guitar player

lol, if you got to know trent personally you might discover that he's anything but. i've met him a few times and read a lot of things he's written; I'm normally a pretty tough judge of character but i think you'll find that he's a very different person than he can come across as.

Radioheads composition is second to none (Beatles maybe). I know a classically trained pianist (heh), and hes really doesn't like modern music, but he is very impressed by the layers of Radioheads music. He also says, most rock isn't like that only symphonic orchestras can produce sound like Radiohead.

Sorry, but Radiohead is my favorite.

and opio, if you haven't heard wilcos live cd that just came out, go get it. Its fantastic, plus I was at the Friday show of that recording. One of the best concerts ive seen

I fucking love NIN!!! I'm not a super huge fan or anything, but I like all the songs that most people are used to. I can't sleep. I havent slept in like more than 24 hours. My muscles are killing me. I'm going through forced wd's in order to lower tolerance.

i too enjoy a bit of Radiohead.

it's funny that you mention a concert pianist, because i recently introduced a good friend of mine who leads a major Middle Eastern symphony orchestra to NIN and he said that it was as if Tchaikovsky had gotten really pissed off and picked up a synthesizer :D

No I havent heard that yet but I'm sure it's great. Jeff never disappoints. Living in Chicago must be nice. Do they still play alot of random shows there.
