I was interested in the heroin and morphine maintenance programs going on around the world. Is anyone here actually on prescribed diamorphine or morphine for maintenance? How does it work in comparison to methadone, buprenorphine? Do you go in everyday, once a week? Does your dose fluctuate? Still using other opiates? How long you been on the program or anything you wish to share?

There's no heroin maintenance in the U.S. I understand there is a limited program in the U.K. and a program in Canada. But here we have to get our heroin from black people.

If you want to know about Heroin maintenance, PM Nick. He was on it for years, might still be. He's a big harm reduction advocate, and can spout off all kinds of useful info.

somewhat off-topic, but it was kind of funny. on the main forum page, it shortens the thread title, and since it was the thread that had the newest post, i saw it as "Anyone here on heroin..."

Now, just imagine, i'm looking at the heroin forums and the newest topic is "anyone here on heroin?" ok, thats it.

To the OP:
Apart from the UK, I know there is also heroin maintenance in Switzerland (they seem to have the most liberal H-maint model), Holland, Spain (apparently?? someone did mention spain - i think DF looked into it) and they had one in Austria a while ago.

They also did test maintenance runs with Palfium over in Holland. They have concluded that Palfium maintenance is safer than H maint, and can be more beneficial in the long run than Methadone maintenance alone and far more effective (as well as euphoric). The only problem with that run - i think it was only limited to a few lucky chosen few (just like H maint.)
I'm not sure if they even have Palfium over there anymore though, cause over here it seems to be off the market completely, since around 2004

I brought this up because next to Heroin maintenance, Palfium is probably the next best thing

Yeah,I was rxed diamorphine for 16 odd years and I'm now rxed IV M amps.

I used to take 150mgs a day in 6-7 shots.I saw my consultant once every 3-4 months and would pick up twice a week from my pharmacist.

Diamorphine kept me alive and out of jail,but in the end it's still a habit-just a more civilised way of getting wasted I guess.

Where are you from, & how did you get on this program & how long was the wait aswell as how much does it cost a week or do you pay for it monthly, or is it something you just pick up from the pharmacy & pay for it as just as it were meds?

Did you think there is less stigma attached to morphine? Or did they force you to switch?

If only i had your 'luck' in getting diamorphine scripted, i don't think i would ever be switching to anything from it. But obviously you had your reasons. I think most of the board here envies you big time, man.
But that is only to be expected on a forum full of junkies.

Slightly off topic - does anyone know why i'm pissing dirty after 4 days of clean time??
In around four years of getting piss tested at the methadone clinic, I ALWAYS pissed clean (i.e tested negative) for opies after just 3 days of 'clean time'. And i mean, always - not a single time i failed after 3 days of abstaining.
What happened was, i got transferred to a doctor some weeks ago and he takes a urine sample right on the spot and uses that six-panel test that includes Opiates, while i sit and watch him do it.
So last week I used heroin on Thursday, and did not use anymore till today so that i can piss clean.
Today i gave the doc my sample, being absolutely positive that it will come up clean - well the doc dipped the strips into my urine, waited a couple of mins and says - "did you use any opiates??". I said - no, there has to be a mistake.
He opens up another brand new test and it's the same - one red line - i am opiate positive.
I made up some cock and bull story about cleaning out some spoons that i stashed months ago which were used for dissolving heroin, and only found them yesterday, and while cleaning them might have got contaminated.
I don't think he believed me, but he seems like a really cool doc, and says he will give me another chance, as long as i piss clean next week.

So what gives?? why did i piss dirty after 4 days clean? (just one single use 4 days prior to test)
It never happened like that before.
Did they come up with a better test recently that detects opies for a longer period?
Appreciate any feedback

Hi Chi,I'm in Leeds in the north of England.I spent about 18 months-2 years on 'done and it clearly wasn't working.I was using H and and any other drugs I could find on top.So,I mentioned diamorphine to my doc and she said OK we'll give it a try.The rest is nods and history.
I didn't have to pay for any of it.The doc and meds were and are all free.God bless this "socialist"paradise and yeah,I was VERY lucky.

and for the guys who wanted to know why I'm now on M.I actually kicked diamorphine(my choice),but after being "sober" for a few months I was drinking heavily and going "nuts".So,I went back into treatment.I chose IV M rather than diamorphine because going back to diamorphine would have been admitting "defeat" for life and I wasn't ready for that then.Now,I'm not so sure.Still,I can always go back to diamorphine if I want.

I shit you not, this is extremely unusual in the present day...Nick may correct me if i am wrong, but he must have an extremely enlightened DR...As i honestly know of only one other guy who has this kinda treatment.And he has a 20yr history of "I will fix no matter what"
Perhaps these kind of Drs take their oaths seriously...

But this is not the norm for the UK...If it was, the jails would be fuckin empty...

Raz is quite right,this is not normal in the UK.I was very lucky.I was in the right place at the right time.The doc who originally rxed for me no longer works with addicts.She left because she was disgusted by the system.She and I got on well and when she left I continued to see her socially.hell nearly 20 years later I still get the odd letter.

There are only 500 diamorphine addicts in the UK out of an addict population of about 200,000.

Told you I was lucky.

The best bit is the powers that be are doing another diamorphine trial(RIOT trial) as if they need more information.
There's talk of extending diamorphine rxing,but there's no political will to make it happen.Plus you can imagine what the Sun would say.
I used to do presentations on the advantages of diamorphine,but I've had to stop doing it because the audiences were driving me nuts.

I heard it is at least around 300,000 estimated heroin users in Britain
Also isn't it only around 300 something that get diamorphine scripted in whole of UK?
You are VERY lucky indeed

In Dublin we got around 20,000 (out of about 2 million city population) heroin addicts, and no diamorphine prescriptions.
Some do get Dihydrocodeine scripted though, and eventually i hope to get it too. if and when i decide to get off methadone

Nick, I heard it's much easier to get scripted methadone amps. Have you tried the done amps? If so how do they compare to diamorphine or morphine?

Hey, i am seriously considering moving to Europe,(i could care less about the rx)i mean its great and im glad for you, but i know i could never get that lucky. Wonder if an american would do okay over there?i mean starting over. i have no wife or kids (that i know of)no real family just hate the arrogance of the states.I'm a real hard worker and very determined. I did well in Mexico made friends where many could not.(no work there). I hear the ladies like Americans over there?
