"If opium-eating be a sensual pleasure, and if I am bound to confess that I have indulged in it to an excess, not yet recorded of any other man, it is no less true, that I have struggled against this fascinating enthralment with a religious zeal, and have, at length, accomplished what I never yet heard attributed to any other man - have untwisted, almost to its final links the accursed chain which fettered me." (from Confessions of an English Opium Eater) Thomas de Quincy
_____
Thou hast the keys of Paradise, O just, subtle, and mighty opium!
- Confessions of an Opium Eater
_____
I saw the best minds of my generation destroyed by
madness, starving hysterical naked,
dragging themselves through the negro streets at dawn
looking for an angry fix,
angelheaded hipsters burning for the ancient heavenly
connection to the starry dynamo in the machinery of night,
who poverty and tatters and hollow-eyed and high sat
up smoking in the supernatural darkness of
cold-water flats floating across the tops of cities
contemplating jazz,
who bared their brains to Heaven under the El and
saw Mohammedan angels staggering on tenement roofs illuminated
FROM Howl - - Allen Ginsberg, RIP

I like to share every now and then... I hope no one minds  pEaCe

Thanks EW... I was hoping that there would be interest for my opiate related addictions on this site.
Even before I stared using I was buried and consumed with researching literature, art, music and theater on this topic.
I think i will keep it coming.
Peace

I certainly hope so! I love this kind of cultural stuff, and have been a long-time fan of Hunter S. Thompson, Burroughs, Ginsberg, et al.....in fact I hope that, along with my web sites and major online sci-fi series project that I am working on, I hope to write a few books in that vein myself.
Or at least do some Gonzo writing worthy of the Good Doc....he deserves for his best memes, which I hope to carry with me, to be shared with the World and never forgotten. I don't blame him for caving in to the pressure of chronic pain and turning that .45 revolver on himself last winter, but he is sorely missed.
As are they all!

have you read the rum diaries yet? you may dig them. Or if you have read them, probably dig them already. If you woundn't mind sharing your work some time, I would love to check it out... I try to dabble, but I find my writing a bit self absorbed. I am a big thompson fan as well... he had me from Hells Angels... His mothed of deathcame as no suprise to me. Specially considering his many mentions of gun play in his literature... I can think of several refrences in his books.

I do believe I've read at least some of them. I do have some gaps in my HST collection.
And I'll be happy to share my work. In fact I run a forum that is sort of a Gonzo Journalism project of its sort:

Antigone you should check out "Portrait of a Heavenly Demon" by Barbara Hodgson if your interested in the history of opiates.
Have either of you read The Curse of Lono? That's my last one in his collection and I cant find the fucker anywhere. Is it as good as they say?
You mentioned the chronic pain HST was in when he offed himself and I've always wondered if he was afraid to get hooked on pain pills. He's mentioned in a couple books how happy he was to never become a junkie and I wonder if he saw it coming. If he started taking Oxy's or something in the state he was already in he would have become an incomprehensible fool.
I remember reading somewhere that a week or two leading up to his suicide that he was at some sort of event and the only way in was up a tall flight of stairs. He tried and tried but couldnt get up. This bothered him very much as it would anyone.
He was smart enough not to let that kind of life drag on I guess. I hope I have those kind of balls when I end up in that position.

Pretty sweet funeral. A fucking canon....c'mon.
Oh yeah you guys may already know but there is a new Documentary out called "When I Die" by Wayne Ewing who did "Breakfast with Hunter". When I Die was shot at the funeral and other memorials I guess. I haven't seen it yet but if anyone does make sure to let us know how it is. Breakfast with Hunter wasnt really all that good so I dont know.
Res ipsa Loquitor- I still have no idea what that means but it sounds cool. Anyone?
CIAO
RES IPSA LOQUITUR - Lat. "the thing speaks for itself." Refers to situations when it's assumed that a person's injury was caused by the negligent action of another party because the accident was the sort that wouldn't occur unless someone was negligent.

Great post Opiyum. It's rare to see someone who knows nearly as much about HST as I do ;-)
