I found this interesting...
apparently green oranges produce narcotine, the sigma opioid agonist found in the opium poppy, a compound with anti-tussive and possibly psychoactive effects...
and whats more interesting,....is that they suspect that narcotine is a precursor to vitamin c...
this is an OLD paper though, 1932...and could be something that is more complicated or entirely false for all I know...
but it did raise an eyebrow.....
so many what ifs....if its true, could morphine producing oranges be far off in the future?
and what about noscapine/narcotine anyway?
I want to get a few grams of this narcotine compound and test it outside of the opium blend of alkaloids...alone, to see if it has any psychoactive /entheogenic effect due to sigma agonist effects...
some data suggests a dxm like effect, but I have heard some people say that narcotine doesnt do much.....
looking around I find a report that states narcotine can be found in unripe tomatos...

I knew I needed to eat more fruit and veggies.

but in what concentrations is this stuff foud in unripe oranges and tomatoes? I'm willing to bet it's a very low concentration huh?
Though if this stuff was really THAT good I'm sure there has already been plenty of legit and scientific research and pharmaceutical studies done on it man... I bet every known opiate and opiate like chemical and drug found in nature has done beens studied and tested to see just what it can do.. if this stuff is worth your trouble I'm sure there would done be some research done and some documents that could be found.. seems like there would anyway.. ya know?
Interesting nonetheless. I just wish we had access to everything the gvnt has done had studies and research done on so we would know this shit and exactly what all this interesting things can do. I bet there is one hell of a database of all the gvnts pharmaceutical studies of diff chemicals n drugs that would be damn nice to have access to.
yeah I'm just opiated n rambling:cool:

I don't really think that's the case. Kratom has basically no legit papers done on it, other than 1 in 2005 stating it's primary opioid alkaloid is 17x the potency of morphine (link (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/15770543?dopt=Abstract)), which seems like it would make it a chemical of interest. But even after that paper was published there's been no real legit research on it that I know of let, let alone applications.

Narcotine is recreational, but it's never really been commercialized.
As to whether or not oranges are likely to produce morphine or be capable of producing morphine, they answer is absolutely not. Noscapine (the more preferred term) is about as structurally unrelated as you can get.
The biosynthetic route for making noscapine is unrelated to that for making morphine (as far as I can tell, I can't find the paper that talked about noscapine right now).
Short of genetically engineering it with genes from the opium poppy, it just can't happen.
Re: kratom and 'legit' papers: I have four very legitimate papers besides the one you're talking about. They're mostly about the individual chemicals, because that's what I sought out, but I know of a few others that are related to the plant itself.

Off-Topic: Any of those papers of interest to a recreational/non-chemist user? If so, if you wouldn't mind posting/PMing me a link or location in a journal I'd appreciate it.

umm.... probably not. They're all very technical. I wouldn't mind sending them to you. They're not available online, so I'd need to email them to you.

Don't worry about it then, thanks for the offer. That one article I cited was sort of interesting so I was just wondering. Unfortunately I didn't take many chem classes in college, sort of regret that.
