View Full Version : Wisdom Tooth

Well I'm going to get another Wisdom Tooth taken out again tomorrow. I goto a dental clinic in the area so the cost is low. I've already had one wisdom tooth removed from the same place and all they apparently thought it was good for was 12 7.5/500 tabs. Obviously, anytime any of us goto a Dr we want to try to get the most out of the visist. I'm happy with them giving me 7.5 but would certainly like a lot more than just 12. Everyone else I have talked to has told me when they goto this place to get an extraction they get at least 30 vics. One more note, I think this tooth is a little worse off. There is a nerve or something hanging down from the inside of it and anytime I touch that it severely hurts. The wisdom tooth has decayed to the point that there is no tooth left below the gum. Does anyone know anything about dentistry? I was thinking that thats when they do a root canal but there would be no reason for that when they are pulling the tooth correct?
Also any suggestions on how I could kind of work them into giving me a bigger script would be great.

Also one other note. My wisdom tooth isn't impacted anymore so I'm not sure if they will actually have to cut it out or just pull it out. Like I said before the tooth is completely decayed below the gum line. I can feel the tooth through my gums but my tongue doesn't actually come into contact with any of the actual tooth if that makes any sense.

My own experience only, but possibly an oral surgeon would give better prescriptions then a dentist?
Anyone else?

Well the thing is I have to goto this clinic because the money situation. I already owe them $100 for an extraction but they will still see you even if you owe them money. It's an extension of West Virginia University so it's state run and they have students working on you/observing so this is where the discount comes in.
I'm sure an oral surgeon would give be a better script but the wisdom tooth isn't impacted anymore so they shouldn't have to cut it out. Thats what I'm confused about, I don't know if they will have to cut it out or not because of the state of the tooth. I'm not sure what they would grab onto to actually pull the tooth out.
Also there is something hanging down inside the tooth, I don't know if it's a nerve or root or whatever by my god you flick that thing with you're tongue expect some serious pain.

I'm sure I'll get #12 7.5's like I did before. Thats why I was asking for opinions on what I could do to hint without being to obvious that I needed more pain meds last time. Before he does the extractions I was thinking of saying something. Kind of say that last time you guys took out my tooth I was in pain for weeks, if it's going to be the same way I would rather wait becaues of christmas coming up etc. Then I would just take it by ear and see what he says. It would be awesome if I could somehow get him to script me to hold me over until after the holidays and then come back and get the extraction and get another script. The tooth is painful but it is certainly tolerable for a few weeks, it's been like this for months the way it is.
Edit: Please everyone remember that going to an oral surgeon is not an option for me. I have no insurance and I can not afford it. The clinic is as good as it gets for me, I don't understand why anything would be any different at this clinic considering they have real Dr's just a regular dentist office would. It's a clinic that is attached to a university for dental students.

Yeah yeah... I've been through this before; allow me to chime in with some useful info. If you go to an oral surgeon VS. a dentist they can pyhsically DO a better job at a HIGHER PRICE however you get choices of anesthesia; you might get a shot of valium or ativan if you ask nicely. They can even put you out if you're not afraid to go under.
Plus, they wrote me scripts (granted I had some impacted teeth) for roxis (at least 16 5 mg first time and 8 5 mg on a refill). They were the roxicodone (oxy IR) because I was REALLY going to be in a lot of pain. Well, that's what made me fall in love with opiates so...
Just my humble suggestion: GO TO THE ORAL SURGEON INSTEAD. They typically (I've seen cases where if the person has a widely-known history of abusing narcotics they'll get a smaller qty.) give out much better meds (minimum: tylenol-3, vicodin; CIIs: percs and maybe demerol or something yummy; IDK. Again, I make no promises because I don't know which practice a person reading this message would go to and they have varying policies. Usually if you're going to be in a buttload of pain they give you percs, so that's a good thing.
About going under for such a procedure: I went under for my appendix and I am a little paranoid after my last "awakening early" with versed in my blood. The concept of not being able to mve a muscle but hear everything else going on around me scares the FUCK out of me! I could not live life that way. The sad part would be... how would I off myself? I couldn't even have that option on the table! Man, I'd better stop...

I was in the exact same boat with the nerve thing, feels like you are striking a tuning fork full of liquid electric hell. You can almost hear it ring through your brain... BONG!!!!
When's your appt? You could probably get pre meds for the pain you are in now. Also, pain is different for everybody, just moan and groan. Release your inner zombie, like in sean of the dead. If you don't bother them for a few days later you can call and say that you are still in pain. Those WVU dentists are so busy thinking about the next mountaineers game, they may leave a chunk in there. The Dentists will use you as a guinea pig for 100 new purdue pain meds, opiates will come down like rain...
If you're going out today, bring an umbrella!

My dentist does a great job, but will not write for anything at all. I had three teeth pulled in one sitting and he told me to take advil. I called him when I got home and told him how bad I was hurting (for real) and he told me to take 800mg at a time.
Everything is variable when doctors/dentists/etc are in control. I would jump for joy if my dentist even gave me T3s.
Hope that tooth feels better for you too. There is nothing quite like a toothache sometimes to really fuck up your day.

You're right about that brother. Had to take an alternate route to get home, everything is flooded in the area. Personally the worst flooding I've seen in the area for a looong time. Shit is breaking loose today!!! I'm sure some people are thinking about the next Mountaineer game but I'm still so pissed off about the Pitt loss I've sworn them off for a while (will never actually happen as I am a die hard fan but I was REALLY pissed off about that game). Anyways, I am going to post a follow up thread and ask for some suggestions, I just got back from the dentist.

I completely understand that an oral surgeon would be the way to go as far as the comfort level, pain meds etc. This is just simply not an option for me, I've gone to oral surgeons to get a consult and see what it would cost etc, well it's certainly not something I could afford even on a payment plan. I mean if I had the money to do something like this I certainly wouldn't goto a clinic... You do understand that I can simply not afford it?
Now, that would be the most horrifying thing ever to wake up during a surgery and not be able to tell the doctors you are awake. Omg that freaks me out so much just thinking about it. Nothing more to say about that.
I do sincerely appreciate the input tho, it's just not an option for me to do that and now it's over with!

Try being strait up with your dentist. He *knows* your gonna be in pain so you should be entitled to something. The last couple times I got a tooth pulled I just asked him for 10mg percs and he said 'no problem'. Im sure it varies from doc to doc but you deserve something and theres nothing wrong with knowing what you like.
But I only usually get 12-16 pills with no refills. But the oral surgeon always gives me a couple refills and 30qty..
Oh yea, you asked about a root canal and from what I understand is if the tooth is severely decayed, a root canal cant be done as the tooth is rotting away and you cant attach a crown with no part of a tooth there, so they just extract it which is WAY cheaper also..

when i got all 4 wisdom teeth pulled, i got a 20ct script of 5/500 vikes
but I prepared before hand, and had 5 80 OC's, cause vikes are fucking useless to me
needless to say at the doctor, I got a nice IV fent shot to put me under, already came into the dental surgeon nodding my ass off... I don't remember ANYTHING from that week, just go to dentist, teeth pulled, vike script, blowing a ton of OC's all day long and sitting on the couch, watching TV and nodding off for 3 days straight, I didn't even give a fuck that my teeth got pulled - I never felt a damn thing! (besides plenty of euphoria hehe)

Honesty might be the best policy here. Sure as hell beats the old junky-dance (Oh Codeine! I'm allergic to it! APAP?!? That's bad for the liver, isn't it?
If he asks what you usually get for pain, say you had percocets the last time, and they worked great. If he doesn't bring it up himself, just tell him that you usually get percocets for pain, and they work a lot better than the vicodin you got one time. Unless he's an opiate nazi or thinks you're a user (And in both cases there's really nothing you can do), it should do the trick.
Last time I had wisdom toothpain, I casually mentioned that I usually get percocets for pain, and he scripted me 40 without batting an eye.
I got 30 t3s for my wisdoms (for some reason docs dont skript vikes in my area) and I was able to get another 30 when those ran out.
Though I wasn't worried, had lots of 40s waiting for me when I got home, no pain :o
