From what I heard he was a vaporizer pioneer for all three substances (or rather two, with one in two separate forms), but did mostly stick to oral use. He did occasionally smoke MJ but said it was not his preference and that doing it regularly was not good for the lungs even though it was far better than tobacco smoke -- something we now have extensive scientific proof of.
Anyhow, I'll have to dig up some links regarding the habits/lifestyle, but as for his self-medication, from what I've heard it was similar to my own. He experimented with a wide variety of things and worked with many chinese/asian herbalists, etc. to find supplements that would help his athletic pursuits, make him look good for his movies, and help him to manage the pain of his many injuries both temporary and chronic....
From what I heard, he tried to avoid daily opiate use and instead tapered up and down in cycles based on what he thought his need was. He used marijuana to balance this and from what I read, ate more hash when he was on lower doses of opium. He also said that raw natural opium and the pharmaceutical opiates such as Morphine etc. were to be used very differently and he thought that opium was dangerous to be used daily for many years as its lesser, "sneakier" alkaloids as he put it, could be harmful if they were allowed to build up over long periods.
From what I read, he was very careful to avoid disruptive addictions but also wasn't afraid to be dependent on something as long as it was beneficial to him.
Several good books have been written about this side of his life....I'll try to dig up more info for yahs :D
