I'm officially hooked on the dark tower.
Any other fans (i know oxydose is)
I loved so many parts of it.
Oh man the part where Roland takes mescaline and gets molested by the oracle was creepy.

Stephen King considers the dark tower to be his life's work. I would say that if that is the best he ever does then he's done a pretty good job.

I'm a fan, I've finished the series and enjoyed them. It started to feel like work a little towards the last two books, however...it felt like he was feeling a little pressed for time and it sorta read that way too.
He put a lot into these works, and I respect that. I'm sure I'll read them again some day.
Still, I feel "The Stand" is King's best work. Anyone ever read the uncut version? I think ex might have gotten my copy in the divorce..all I can find is the original version. I loved that book...I highly recommend it to any fan that hasn't already read it.
Great topic!

Yeah, I've read them all and most of the other books that are connected to the series too(that's like half of what he has written). I think the stand is my all-time favorite of his books. I've only read the un-cut version, and really have no urge to read the version that isn't the way it was intended.

That's what he says...the original version is what the publishers forced on him. Later, when he was the shit...he pushed out the uncut one and told the publishers to like it. I'm glad he did!
I'm psyched to read it again now...but all I can find is the original:( Damn that ex-wife...

unfortunately I had THAT spoiled when i read about Ka maybe on wikipedia i think it was unintentionally... looked for more about it and stumbled on a post about the end representing Ka being a wheel and all... i won't say the exact end so it's not spoiled for others. Damn, Randall Flagg (walter o'dim/man in black) actually forshadows it heavily as hell in his pavalar with Roland at the end of book one.
don't think it'll detract from my experience :D

I've read a few other DT-related works too. Like the Hearts in Atlantis "Low Men in Yellow Coats" novella. Before I even knew what DT was I read that, and found out from an article about hearts in atlantis online that the low men were after Ted Braughtigan because he's a psychic "breaker" that can break the beams that hold the Dark Tower up (which would mean TOTAL UNIVERSAL DESTRUCTION FOR ALL muhuhuhuhaahaha). So of course the Crimson King wants him and other breakers. At the end of Hearts in Atlantis Ted sends the kid he befriended a letter with rose petals in the envolope... a direct allusion to the tower.
I really liked the short story though, and highly recommend it. It was made into a movie called Hearts in Atlantis too.

Haven't looked in a store yet...I'm still looking for the one I already own. When ex and I went seperate ways I got some of her shit and she got some of mine...its all a matter of negotiating to get it back.
Shouldn't be a big issue.

I use to really like king until I started reading H.P. love craft, and it’s like comparing vicoden to an oxy to me. I have read most of all of kings works, except the rest of the d.t. series (I’ve only made it to book 4). I always did like eddie, and sometimes I reread his introduction in book 2 ( that’s some funny shit I don’t care who you are).

I second this question. I'm always open to becoming obsessed with a new author's writings. I've heard of Lovecraft, just don't know of anything he's written.
I know King likes him too.

O.K., Lovecraft has been the biggest influence on some of modern horror writers along with many science fiction writers, Steven king, clive barker, Anne rice, and ray bradberry are just a few. You may not know his name, but I am sure you know some movies that were adapted from his work, The movie the thing is a good example, it was an adaption from love crafts story At the mounts of madness ( though there are some major discrepancies). I’m sure you have at least heard of the Necronomican ( evan if only from the evil dead movies).
Most of Lovecrafts work was in short stories Though he did write several novellas ( bigger than a short story but smaller than a novel). I would also like to point out Lovecraft wrote many times about drugs in his works ( especially opiates, morphine was very popular back in his day). My personl favorite short story of his is called The hound, followed closely by the festival. My favorite Novella he wrote was a story called Shadow over Innsmouth. What is commonly thought of as his biggest accomplishment is several stories he wrote which are labeled The Cthulhu mythos, some stories wich involve this are Call of Cthulhu, and Dagon, both excellent stories I feel. I think it was lions gate films that made the movie dagon, it’s a good flick, but really is based more after Shadow over inns mouth.
Youtube has a lot of fans that have made videos inspired by love crafts work, one of the better ones I have found is The terrible old man, heres the link.
http://youtube.com/watch?v=XHpuAAnHdEc (http://youtube.com/watch?v=XHpuAAnHdEc)
I feel love craft is a far more intellectual of a read than king, but king did a fairly good job copying love crafts style in his short story Jerusalem’s lot ( not to be confused with salems lot, Which I always felt was a poor attempt to plagiarize Dracula, but I digress). If and when you read some of love crafts work you will undoubtedly notice one cliché love craft over uses again and again. Despite the cliché he’s worth the read, and I hope you guys enjoy him as much as I do, I only wish he had lived longer , so he could have wrote more books. Trust me read him, and you can thank me later once your hooked through the sack n’ back. If you want I’ll be happy to list some more stories of his that are really good, I always have enjoyed turning people on to love craft, because he never ( at least to me) disappoints.
I’ll shut up now, sorry when I’m passionate about something I can tend to ramble.

I’m sorry if I high jacked the thread! Though I wanted to also add writers Clark ashton smith and Robert Howard ( he was the creator of conan along with some awesome horror stories) were both close friends with Howard Phillip Lovecraft, and awesome writers of short stories as well. All three wrote for a pulp magazine called weird tales back in the 30’s and 40’s. Once you exhuast Lovecraft might try giving them a read.
Thanks for the interest, made my day to talk about my favorite author to people who actually give a damn about what I have to say ( it’s that or the 80 I just snorted LOL, hmmmmm).

Where have you looked for the un-cut version. I work at a big book store and the un-cut is all we have.
My favorite part of the un cut version of the stand is where the heroin addict finds his former dealers stash of uncut dope! Show of hands guys, how many of you have dreamed of most of the world being wiped the fuck out and the world becoming your own personal opiate filled play ground for the rest of your life ( raises hand)? Ultimate junky fantasy ( maybe we should write a thread on that, ultimate addicts fantasies?, i'm sure it would be a popular thread), think mine would be my own personal vat of fent to swim in ( LMAo swim goes fer a swim:rolleyes:).
trust instructor-" Gareth, quick trust exercise. Ultimate fantasy?"
David brent- " nothing fancy ...we're all doing it"
Gareth " Two lesbians probably, sisters..... i'm just watching "
trust instructor " ok ..... uh , Tim do you have one?"
Tim " ok, didn't think I would ever say this but ya, could we hear more from Gareth please?" LMFAO
here's the like watch it laugh then thank me later!

Riotgrrrl I am WAY interested in the comics...I didn't even know they existed. I've been a comic book fanatic since i was little, and I just got interested in the Dark Tower series.
I've been in love with Steven King's writing since I was in elementary school, but had always ignored his opus (the Dark Tower). Honestly, in light of my recent experiences

seems vaguely appropriate. I really didnt fall in love with the dark tower 'til I fell in love with opiates.

if you get a chance, watch 1408 the movie. John Cusack dominates the role.

I saw the movie, i thought the book was way better as well as the other stories.I would have picked 2 or 3 to be a movie before 1408.Cusack did an amazing job though as well as Jackson for his miniscule role.

actually, NO HOAXE! In the movi "the mist" that is out right now (which is based on a steven king short story in a collection called the skeleton crew) the main character is a sketch artist for major holywood movie posters. And in the first few shots he is working on a sketch of............... You guessed it............... the gunslinger. It is going to be a collaberation between stephen king and JJ. Abrams, the man behind lost and the new 1.18.08 movie (cloverfield) I cannot wait!

Yea it was wild how roland could take over eddie's mind. Imagine being doped up and feeling that sensation, it would be wild.
