View Full Version : Can it be done?
For anyone who is currently in the US Military or knows this...
Hypothetical question... Can you take continue to take Suboxone if you enlist? Sorry if this is a ridiculous question. I googled this with little success.
Thanks.

I highly doubt that you could take any maintenance med.

You generaly can't be on any meds that may not be available in the field especially if the drugs are needed to ensure regular performance. Since the military even frowns on anti-depressants, I don't think they would be ok with a drug addiction.

You cant be on anything, at all. If they find out, usually depending on the situation its either just before you leave for boot, or while your in. I also am like 95% sure thats its a dishonorable discharge for something like that.
Its a different situation if your in the military and you need drugs, then your already in and they would rather keep you then send you packing, so they usually will help then.
Again to answer your question, its not the greatest idea.

Doper soldiers aren't a great advertisment and think of all the $$$$ spent on training. To be honest I'm amazed that many more soldiers don't develope substance problems.Gawd bless the poor soldiers.
SF,if I don't see you around..........much luck with junior and I've no doubt that you'll make a good pops.Take care.

this is off topic but i had a friend who went to basic, he shot his last shot of h on the plane there. he got there was sick for a week, they put him in the army hospital. he got out after w/d (they thought it was a bug). and he finished basic. went on to paratrooper traning(u kno that big tower at that one fort that they practice jumping and pulling the chutes). and he was in the middle of airborne ranger school and fucking left to come back up here and shoot dope. u can go do it as a junkie and quit before u leave. its how much determination u have to fight ur disease while down there. also they wolnt let u in if u are med dependent. im sure alot of mil personal are using that good cheap opium and herion in afghan. a friend of a friend just got back from there and he was a mess, he wasnt' caught but hes now an opiate addict and never used before he went to afghan..
Yeah, I figured as much. there's no chronic pain issues here (obviously, or he wouldn't be joining), so it's strictly recreational. I think gettin your ass whipped into shape would be a good substitute :p
So anyway, I guess it's a good reason to get off the subs.
On another note, isn't there something going on in California where a soldier returned from Iraq and got addicted to opiates and robbed some pharmacies? God bless these poor soldiers. No excuse for doing stuff like that, but I think veterans are definitely overlooked when it comes to all the post war stuff. Makes me absolutely sick (that's another reason I like Ron Paul so much.) Let's try taking care of the ones that are willing to die for our country than the immigrants who come and get free healthcare.... don't mean to get political.
Off my soapbox, but thanks for the responses.

Fort Benning, Georgia, right? I have two buddies in the 82nd Airborne unit, and they trained at Ft. B.

Good quest., I'm probably going to have to agree w/ everyone else tho, in the fact that I highly doubt soldiers are allowed to be on any kind of maintenance...Nick brought up a good point; we know our gov't is all about "image" and "money" so to have soldiers on either Suboxone or methadone would break this false image the United States likes to portray that they're "the best in the world" and "[insert egotistical asinine American catchphrase]" and things like that, so I would have to vote "NO" on the maintenance...(even though let's say a soldier did have a dope prob. and he or she was on maintenance, I don't see how Sub would hurt them, although I can see it from an image standpoint...if the US was known to have drug addicts (recovering or active) in it's military, we would become a bigger laughingstock to the world than we already are, quite unfortunately...
and with the recent military blunders the US gov't has had, I don't think they want any more heat on them than they already have...

Agreed! I highly doubt they would have this med in the field anyhow

yea it was fort benning ga. he went thru all of that fucking traning and the lure of heroin brought him back, hes been on methadone, and off of it, he was on it, then relapsed, got clean on his own. i talked to him a bunch, he talked so much shit on methadone and how hellish it was to detox off of it in jail. and hes back on it.

Yeah: I understand both sides: u don't really want a strungout junkie lurking around: we can get pretty desperate when we're sick, and the morphine syrettes really are needed more by the medics...than by me...and I know they got trades, like clerks and shit--actually most of'em--where u never see combat...but again, it's just too much hassle for the military...and nobody gives a shit if junkies don't like it...nobody else in this country cares, why should the military give us a pass?
I mean, I understand guys enlisting to get away from the shit, really, and sometimes that works...but in this case I don't think it is...
But me, it's huge deja Vu, the whole thing, same as 'Nam, maybe worse, in the long run, who knows...most of'em do allright when they come home...but the ones who don't...well, welcome to the lifer junky life...tho u'll probably spend most of it trying to escape....
