Anyone ever try them? Forgot all about them until I was going through some old papers from work and saw them listed.

Mornin' Roxi*, hope you had a nice THanksgiving ;-)

but, I have heard of these...my guess would be that it is a "last ditch" medication---> maybe for cancer patients, etc. who maybe are suffering from non-stop nausea (that's where the tropane alkaloids come into play, belladonna, scopolamine, hyoscyamine, atropine, et al) and the opium, I would imagine is for pain? Maybe if the illness is very advanced and the patient can no longer swallow pills, I guess, besides a central line and intravenous medication, suppositories are the next-best route of administration.

Sad, kind of, cuz u thik about how fucked an individual must be to have this prescribed...

On a side note, I did some reading on opium tinctures and such, and was surprised to learn that "OPium Tincture" (made by Lilly brand pharmaceuticals) is a very common med for patients with AIDS...The article said that opium itself rather than another isolated alkaloid narcotic (like morphine for example) seems to work better for those who A) have a very high tolerance to "traditional" pain meds or B) patients who require the sleeping pill effect of pure opium (cause u and I know that opium itself WILL induce sleep wheras morphine, hydromorphone, meperidine, oxymorphone, etc. these can all induce sleep, but it is not set in stone so to speak...THe article said that opium tinctures and suppositories, in addition to being painkillers, also work as sleep aids, AND, i found this one noteworthy: OPium will put an end to chemotherapy, and HIV-related diarrhea (from treatments, or from the medications itself) wheras somethuing like loperamide would be "band-aid" therapy...Also, in the case of the B&O supps., the tropane will work 100x better than compazine, for example (or any of the phenothiazines or anti emetics, like dimenhydrinate) to alleviate illness related nausea...

Good read, Roxi*, and I hope this shed some light on the topic

anyway, take it easy and I'll ttyl ;-)

Belladonna & Opium?!?!? Holy shit, thats an old-school concoction. Not exactly cutting edge modern medicine.

I would cram a few of those bad boys were the sun dont shine. Isn't belladonna poisonous? i must be wrong...

yep, ur right, belladonna has atropine and thats a helluva poison (like when kids eat Datura seeds and stuff) but in very small doses (in the microgram range) it's a pretty good anti nausea drug...problem is, is that belladonna and related are anti-cholinergics and u can have NASTY side effects from too much of them.

ur right tho, that's old, old school!

Hey Oxy, Hope your Thanksgiving went good too!! From what I gathered from the literature I had, the suppositories where given to people suffering severe urinary tract and bowel pain/discomfort. The Belladonna akaloids were added for the anti-spasmatic effect they have. My guess is there is more hyoscamine and atropine in them then any of the other akaloids of Belladonna. In modern medicine hyoscamine is used frequently as an anti-spasmatic and both it and atropine are used to dry secretions. Scoplamine is used in a transdermal patch for motion sickness. Atropine is also used for cardiac events. The Indications and Usages say Moderate to Severe Pain and Moderate to Severe Pain of the Urinary Tract. And you are right about the anti-emetic action. I remember dispensing these when I worked at the Institutional Pharm, where we serviced nursing homes. Never in retail.

^^I have been prescribed Donnatal before, which is a combination of Belladonna alkaloids and Phenobarbital. I believe I got them when I was having severe stomach cramps and such and they worked quite well.

^^^^Yup. Soemtimes at Rehabs they will give a drug called Bentyl (dicyclomine) for stomach cramps. It is also an alkaloid of Belladonna.

I would hate to be prescribed these. Because it would most likely mean that I was dying of cancer.

Hi Roxi, I know this thread is a bit old but I had to post. I've had them in the hospital and have been scripted for them. The first time was in the hospital. I've got chronic kidney stone disease - more than 200(not a typo) since 1980 anyway I had a cysto with ureteroscopy and when I came out of anesthesia my bladder started to spasm. Worst kind of pain I've ever dealt with. I was screaming, puking, crying, it was insane. They tried giving me Numorphan and a few other things but nothing worked. Luckily the Charge nurse had served in the Navy and knew about B&Os. She popped one of those babies in there and within 15 -20 min I was cool and loaded from all the Numorphan and other stuff they had pushed in my IV.

That happened early in my stone making history and since then I've had bladder spasms a few times just from passing stones, so I've been scripted for them. I don't even know if they make them any more. My last script is kind of old. They come in two strengths. Way too late/early to figure it out now. But I'll never forget the experience in the hospital because the Charge nurse was talking to me with her finger up my butt:D and was telling me about when she was in the Navy she used to know of sailors cooking them somehow to isolate the Opium and they would smoke it. I tried a couple of times but all I ever got was a hard puddle of of ugly shit-green wax. That's all I know. Hope it helped.

In some FL drugstore we "liberated" one night, there was a bunch of opium suppositories in the ClassA box (yep, a long time ago) and we all laughed, figuring we'd never stoop that low...

Yep, u guessed it: I was plugging before it was cool....it was funny too, because some Outlaws from down Tampa way came up, and got all the speed off me, and u should have seen them, when I tried to get them to "just try the suppositories."

You'd have thought I told'em they oughtta try cross-dressing...and it was only when I was down to the demerol, when I started thinking, what the hell, nobody's looking....dilaudids gone, percs gone, demerol almost gone...all of a sudden, opium suppositories didn't look so bad...but I couldn't even figure out how to fix them, and I wasn't about to *eat* them....so I practiced primitive plugging, before u guys even knew what dope was...but I didn't do no goddamn Princess Manicure Maneuvers or nothing weird...just straight up tough guy plugging!!!

Great info Wiggly, thanks! The last time I saw them when when I worked at the institutional pharm several years back. Never saw them in a retail setting.

Hey Roxi, I just tried to look them up in my PDR (2006) and I don't see them listed. Thankfully I haven't needed to use them in a long time.

Wow, I am glad they worked 4 u, Uncle Wiggly. I'm sure that kidney stones are NO FUN at all. I have been lucky enough to not ever have had one, but I hear they are painful as all hell.

Glad that B&O helped u out tho!! I would have thought the Numorphan would have done something; that gives me an idea how excruciating the pain is.

take care Uncle Wiggly
